POD SUMMIT 2015

WINNING WITHOUT COMPROMISING

THE CULTURE

IN ORGANISATIONS AND TEAMS

CULTURE ISN’T A ‘THING’ ON IT’S OWN. It doesn’t exist without us making it; it is simply an outcome of the

way we live. We don’t ‘do things around here’ because of the culture…

The culture is because of the way we do things around here!

People make culture every day!

• What we value, what we believe in, the decisions we make, and how we behave creates our culture.

• The things we say yes to and reward become our culture.

• The things we say no to and resist become our culture.

Plan for great culture

We can see it in the way we are and how we get things done.

• Heroes• Rituals• Symbols• Icons• Language

Take a look around you –culture is expressed everywhere.

There are layers to culture, and we all belong to more than one. You have a personal culture, a team culture, an organisational culture, community cultures and a global culture.

There are many influences on each.

• Dictates what we accept and what we don’t.

• Is a performance driver.

• Lifts our internal and external standards.

VALUES

THE IMPORTANCE OF VALUES INA WINNING CULTURE. Values drive behavior.

THAT WORKING OUTWHAT YOU VALUE IS ENOUGH TO DRIVE PERFORMANCE.Thinking is only a precursor to action!

THAT HAVINGCLEAR VALUES MEANS YOU’LL NEVER RUN INTO ETHICAL DILEMMAS OR TRICKY SITUATIONS!• Loyalty vs. honesty• Justice vs. leniency• Long-term vs. short-term• Individual vs. team

YOU FALLING FOR ANYTHING.

WINNING CULTURES?

• A ‘win at all costs’ attitude

• Unrelenting pressure to succeed

• Doing whatever it takes to make it to the top

• ‘Trade-off’ attitudes that sacrifice doing the right thing for profit/gain

POOR CULTURES

This helps us see some of the high risk excuses for poor culture such as:

• ‘It was for a good cause’• ‘It was unavoidable, I had no choice’• ‘There was no harm, so no foul’• ‘You take life too seriously, lighten up’• ‘These are unusual times’• The Kings pass

DEFINES YOUR CULTURE.

Each excuse made shapes your culture.

The way you do some things… is the way you do most things!

People make culture, every day.
