OUT OUT DAMNED SPOT
shakespeare’s macbeth
PROCESS
Over two ‘tenth days’, Year 10 art and design have explored the idea of changing identity using the play of ‘Macbeth’ as a catalyst.
After exploring the main characters and analysing their transformations throughout the 5 acts, students came up with a list of adjectives for each character.
For example for Lady Macbeth - pride, vanity, greed, ambition, loss, resent, envy, power, greed, ambition, frenzy, seductress, persuasive, ruthless, murderess, realisa-tion, confusion, complicity, guilt, awareness, sorrow, loss, madness, unhinged, grief, frailty, demented, suicidal. (All from just one character - what a play!)
Using their own faces as canvases, each student took an aspect of one of the char-acters and depicted a particular emotive or psychological state with the help of pro-fessional artists, face painters and photographers. In doing so we all learnt a great deal about our own identity and how we present to the world.
Each character was further explored using collage and mixed media while students learnt the persuasive power of imagery.
As a group we looked at how to use image as analogy and fed these into collages and a sculptural piece of Macbeth.
Dividing into groups, the plot was explored using simple collage and drawing tech-niques in sequences. We managed to create over 500 images and animate (most) of the plot in under a day!
