TEAMWORK: CASE STUDY
Soon Kiat is a squad leader and has been trying hard to get his squad members working closely together. The immediate problem he is facing is that two younger members, Nathan and Alan, have been at each other’s throats for the longest time. Their ongoing dispute, which has spilled over from class matters, is marring the squad’s unity and cohesion.
He did try once to talk to them, but they have argued that he is interested in solving the dispute for his own sake only. That is, he wants them to stop bickering so that he can win this year’s Inter-squad competition. Right now, the rest of the squad are looking to him to solve the problem. If he does not, then it becomes clear that they will be frustrated with him as well.
What can you do, if you were Soon Kiat? Apply what you have learnt about communication towards attaining a satisfying conflict resolution. Discuss as a group.

What does it say to you?

TEAMWORK: CASE STUDY
Mark is not a well-liked squad leader. He treats his squad members harshly since that was the way his NCOs treated him. While he has set a consistently high standard for himself, he expects that the rest can and will follow without question.
The rest of the squad are beginning to get nervous since the Company’s Inter-squad drill competition is approaching. Mark will get even more dictatorial in the run-up.
What can Mark do as a squad leader, and what can you do as a squad member? What kind of relationship do you want in a team?
OHT 7.11
Teamwork means going for
WIN/WIN RELATIONSHIPS
Let go of wanting to win arguments or points
If one is winning and the other is losing then you have two losers
Win/win relationships see life as cooperation not competition, they go for the best possible outcome for both people.
Let go of being right.
OHT 7.12
Your Choices With Win/Win:
Take note of these kinds of existing relationships.
You Win/They Win Mutually beneficial outcome, Compromise is reached
You Win/They Lose ‘I get my way, you don’t get yours.’
You Lose/They Win ‘I’m always the one who has to give way!’ Lose/Win is about putting yourself down with others so that you
can be a victim
You Lose/They Lose If I can’t have it you can’t have it either
