Catapult is a Technology Strategy Board programme

Deconstructing my experience @ #tsbiot and how can @cdecatapult help

3 July 2013

Dr. Maurizio PiluConnected Digital Economy Catapult@maurizio_pilu

2Overview

• #tsbiot I will deconstruct my personal experience in designing, setting up & managing a £9m innovation program in #iot while @ the Technology Strategy Board

• @cdecatapult How my new organization can help drive this agenda forward

4WATCH OUT: STRATEGY AT WOK!

5January 2011: IoT is hot! Really?

OK, Let’s look into it …. Hmmm …

7BTW, it’s not as if it’s new ….

Pervasive Internet

Connected Environments

Smart Places

Smart Cities

Connected Cars

Ubiquitous

Computing, Everyware

Connected World

Physical Internet

Smart Homes

Smart Meters

Wireless Sensor Networks

Ambient Intelligence

Machine to Machine

Web of Things

The Future Internet

............

... and it has many identities ….

9So we started a conversation…..

• 6 events across various sectors• Engaged Energy, Transport, Built

Environment, Health, Creative

• >400 businesses and academics participated

• All run with the same format

• Output summarized in a report

• Seeded a “UK community” (now 1700 practitioners)

10… and it was fun & useful …

…but still lots to do ….….

12Many perspective!

It’s about sensors & devices

It’s about M2M

It’s about a big IT system that controls stuff

It’s all about data value chains

It’s about new services

It’s the Internet – no such thing as IoT

It’s about the user experience

It’s about growth-opportunities

It’s about new business models

13… and uncertainty about where value is

…but patterns were emerging … 14

15Fast forward a few months ….

£5m (£9m) innovation support programme 16

R&D Roadmap

Community building

Events

Engagement

Consultation

Investment

… and that’s the focus … 17

• Support building a UK community looking at shared perspective IoT

• Adoption, applications and services development

• Focus on the enablers of and barriers to the ecosystem of applications and services of the Internet of Things

• Take a “data value chain” perspective

Preparatory studies 18

https://connect.innovateuk.org/web/iot-convergence-preparatory-studies-2012/

10 business-led projects looking into ecosystems in 10 different IoT application areas/sectors.

Follow on: £6.2m IoT demonstrator19

• Develop a network of Internet of Things clusters

• Incentivize more accessibility to IoT data

• Adoption of ‘information hubs’ • Help drive interoperability• Become a platform for

collaboration

The Internet of Things Demonstrator20

• Results of £6.2m investment announced by David Willetts on 11 March 2013

• Investing in 8 IoT clusters to demonstrate ecosystems in specific application areas

• >40 organizations involved, including Intel, ARM, BT, IBM, NEUL, Cisco, EDF, Carillion, LivingPlanIT, and many SMEs

Example: London City airport IoT cluster

22Fast forward again ….

23Some personal learning ….

More questions, really ….

Disruptive? Possibly …. “Telegraph of things” 24

McKinsey Qtly: how data and the telegraph in 1854 shaped the organizational chart of NY Railway

Revolution? Not sure

Evolution? More like it?

25

Seen any of these? Been around for 20-30 years!

26Hype? Reality? Where are we?

$1t$10t$14t

Reasons to invest have to be clear ….

But are they from a £ perspective?

27

28#iot: Three broad ranges of players

• Those providing the “plumming”

• Those in large verticals (e.g. health)

• Those who don’t need and/or can’t wait for the above (typically SMEs)

• Different dynamics, ROI, time to market, £££, etc.

???

???

Out window of visibility today

Do we really know where it’s going to go?And how?

Growth: Innovation, new applications, services

Core foundation of the IoT to drive designs, strategies,

investments

… the evolution will unfold in the coming years

31Vertical vs Horizontal play?

• 1-1 full time …

• Sectors and actors can and should agree a common horizontal vision ….

• But IoT goes deep into the guts of sectors: people, processes, biz models

• Can both co-exist? If not now, when?

32Cost + tools key to adoption ….

but who’s going to get there first or drive it?

• High cost slow rate of adoption

• Low cost more biz cases stack up

• No tools hard for innovators to experiment

• Open Source, abstraction layers, APIs, data, privacy, Dev Kits Ecosystems

• Arm: “IoT need an Android”

33IoT is not a technology – it’s an ensemble of things ….

- Collaboration is key - Creative, technologists, sectors players- Technology disciplines coming together- Open source / open access approaches- Federation and APIs

- The importance of “integrative” demonstrators with clear use cases

- Innovation, innovation, innovation

34...and …

DOT DOT DOT

many more questions

35Fast forward one more time ….

37Connected Digital Economy Catapult

• Set up by the Technology Strategy Board• Applied R&D&I centre in the digital economy• Based in London, national remit• Centre with critical mass to help UK innovators• £10m p.a. of core investment from TSB• Overtime co-funded by businesses and grants• Total revenue ~£20-30m pa, 200 staff; £10-15m

pa from businesses

The digital data value chain – our ‘field of play’38

39Connected Digital Economy Catapult

• CDEC is not a funder • We run R&D&I projects with industry and

academia• Focussed on helping commercialization by• … making specific capabilities & platforms

openly available...• .. for the benefit of UK innovators

40Our #IoT angles

• Cities & communities – it’s where lots of data, verticals, people come together, in high density

• Data, data, data - #IoT will generate huge amounts of data (e.g. “cities generate more data they know what to do with”)

• Next generation infrastructure, in particular• M2M• Whitespace communication

• Connecting & supporting existing investments (e.g. from TSB, EU, RCs)

41Questions

• What capabilities & facilities UK’s innovators need that they cannot get from “the market”.

• What strategic (i.e. for wider benefit) industry-led projects does the UK need to move forward• Is the #tsbiot investment enough?

• What else?• Please get in touch.
