3.Examine MY PLATE and Food Pyramid to

discover how they complement each other.

4.Create nutritionally balanced breakfast, lunch,

and dinner meal using the MY PLATE model.

Terminology—1 • Nutrition:

o The science of food and how the body uses the foods

taken in.

• Nutrients:o The chemical substances in food that help build and

maintain the body.

• Undernourished:o Not eating enough food to keep a healthful body weight

and activity level.

• Malnutrition:o Lack of proper nutrients in the diet.

Terminology—2 • My Plateo Current USDA guideline for portions and nutrients for a balanced

diet.

• Food Guide Pyramid:o A diagrammatic representation of recommended portions of the

five basic food groups, plus fats and oils

• USDA: o United States Department of Agriculture; responsible for

developing and executing U.S. federal government policy on

farming, agriculture, and food.
