Clariant provides parabens-freepreservation: how Velsan SC (sorbitancaprylate) helps to reduce theconcentration of classicalpreservatives

Clariant has introduced Velsan SC(sorbitan caprylate), a completely

natural hydrotrope and emulsifyingingredient that strengthens thefunctions of aromatic alcohols, organic acids, and other traditionalpreservatives. Parabens-free VelsanSC minimizes the preservative levelsused in cosmetic products. The use ofpropyl and butyl parabens in productsfor children under three years old hasbeen banned by the Danishgovernment. In addition, the ScientificCommunity on Consumer Safety hasrecommended a ban on isobutylparabens and control on the use ofpropyl and butyl parabens in cosmeticproducts. Sorbitan caprylate, asynergistic additive derived fromrenewable resources, addressesmarket requirements for ‘greener’solutions and consumer preferencesfor products free of preservatives. Theadditive is said to increase theefficacy of aromatic alcoholantimicrobials and improve theproperties of organic acids, whichserve as ‘natural’ preservatives incosmetics. Sorbitan caprylate alsohas an outstanding toxicologicalprofile. Sorbitan caprylate is producedvia the esterification reaction of therenewable materials sorbitan andcaprylic acid.
