The congress was conducted by CESIO, the European Surfactants Association and offered a platform for experts in the field of surfactants. Under the theme “Sustainability of the Surfactant Industry in a highly regulated world” the congress focused on the exchange between science and technology. At their booth, BASF gave insight into their technical expertise as well as into their extended product portfolio and formulation know-how. With the Cognis acquisition, BASF offers customers even more options for intelligent new solutions in strongly differentiated application fields such as home and personal care, as well as industrial use. Surfactants are key for sustainable applications and developments, and open up possibilities for new and efficient solutions in different markets. The congress therefore covered all aspects of the surfactant value chain. Scientific, economic and technical issues, applications, market trends, emerging issues as well as safety and regulatory considerations were presented in lectures and poster sessions. “It’s about interfaces between business and science, showing that surfactants are the key raw materials for various applications at the centre of the supply chain,” says Thomas Greindl, Vice President Regional Business Management Home Care BASF, who also took over the position as CESIO president this year and who opened the congress with a welcome speech. At the plenary session on Monday, 6 Jun 2011, Michael Heinz, BASF Board Member, spoke about BASF as an enabler of choices in the field of surfactants and beyond providing customers with solutions addressing current and future market trends by taking into account economical, ecological and social aspects. BASF’s Care Chemicals division offers a broad portfolio of products for hygiene, personal care, home care, industrial & institutional cleaning as well as technical applications. Through the acquisition of Cognis, Care Chemicals has become the leading supplier to the cosmetics industry and has strengthened its number one position in products for the detergents and cleaners industry. Clariant provides parabens-freepreservation: how Velsan SC (sorbitancaprylate) helps to reduce theconcentration of classicalpreservatives

Clariant has introduced Velsan SC(sorbitan caprylate), a completely

natural hydrotrope and emulsifyingingredient that strengthens thefunctions of aromatic alcohols, organic acids, and other traditionalpreservatives. Parabens-free VelsanSC minimizes the preservative levelsused in cosmetic products. The use ofpropyl and butyl parabens in productsfor children under three years old hasbeen banned by the Danishgovernment. In addition, the ScientificCommunity on Consumer Safety hasrecommended a ban on isobutylparabens and control on the use ofpropyl and butyl parabens in cosmeticproducts. Sorbitan caprylate, asynergistic additive derived fromrenewable resources, addressesmarket requirements for ‘greener’solutions and consumer preferencesfor products free of preservatives. Theadditive is said to increase theefficacy of aromatic alcoholantimicrobials and improve theproperties of organic acids, whichserve as ‘natural’ preservatives incosmetics. Sorbitan caprylate alsohas an outstanding toxicologicalprofile. Sorbitan caprylate is producedvia the esterification reaction of therenewable materials sorbitan andcaprylic acid.
