Wetland Restoration

Largest voluntary wetland restoration on the Elizabeth: This area will

be converted into the largest wetland and related reforestation project on

the Elizabeth River, totaling 5.5 acres. Kinder Morgan/Elizabeth River

Terminals donated use of the land!

Restoration Area

Elevation is critical – Tidal wetlands grow in a narrow elevation

range. Excavators grade to meet the wetland elevations.

Healthy tidal wetlands grow in three zones: 1) “Low marsh,” or grasses

in the river; 2) “High marsh” - the transition zone between the river

grasses and the upland trees, and 3) “Upland wooded buffer.” The

zones work together to filter contamination & provide wildlife habitat.

We build it; they will come - Once the wetland is restored, the number

and type of fishes that return will be monitored. In a nearby restored

wetland, 21 species of fish were caught.

Preventing wetland erosion: Boat wakes eroded prior wetlands at

Money Point. A rock sill will reduce this erosion.

Many thanks to wetland restoration funders!
