How we built a change platform by

accident! #MATEXP…no hierarchy, just

people

Kath Evans, Head of Patient Experience – Maternity, Newborn,

Children and Young People, Nursing Directorate, NHSE

And the #MatExp team - including people from all across the

country! Mums, professionals…all voices are welcome!

Leap of faith

What will we cover today?

Just how on earth DO you create a change platform by accident?!

• How the #MatExp social media movement evolved

• What is ‘Whose Shoes’ and what happened during the pilot ‘Whose Shoes’

maternity user experience workshops in London

• How you fit in the shoes of others…even those with different sized feet and a

completely different taste in footwear?

• How the training film ‘In Their Shoes’ can be used to improve professional practice

• How local collaboration has taken place and how Maternity Service Liaison

Committees fit in.

#MatExp – no hierarchy, just people!

Our #MatExp philosophy: collaboration and co-production

Why Was #MatExp Conceived? • Improving service user experience in maternity care a priority for NHS

England

• Key policy drivers including the NHS Outcomes Framework, NICE

guidelines and quality standards, national Audit Office report, the 6 C’s

• CQC 2013 survey, PEN maternity survey – key themes for

improvement recognised such as information provision, continuity of

care, facilities

• Critical to success is involving and engaging staff and service users

• Essential to focus on action, work closely together and share results

Exploring the pregnancy journey – ‘In Their

Shoes’

• Aim / objective:

To explore the pregnancy journey and stand in the shoes of the user. The focus is the human voice as the user interacts with maternity services – the thoughts and feelings, concerns and joys.

• Purpose:

To promote understanding of the perspectives of others, challenge assumptions, harness empathy and compassion and improve professional practice.

• Target audience:

Health professionals working in maternity services

• Method of delivery:

Training workshops, discussion tool and user experience events /

workshops

How Do You Make It Work In Your Hospital, and

for Your Specialty?

Training brief has been developed in conjunction with the film to support training delivery

in these areas common to ANY hospital and ANY specialty:

• Communication

• Quality Improvement

• Team Working

• Continuity of Care

We at #MatExp HQ are very proud parents watching our baby grow and flourish!

So that’s how we created a change platform…by accident! • Energy • J*FDI • Ownership • No hierarchies • All views welcome • Social media!

That ‘castor oil’ moment… #eek!
