The first manual camerainvented in 1888 by George

W. Eastman

The intention By creating the first manual camera Mr. Eastman wanted to bring photography to the mainstream.

The inventor-who was he?George W. Eastman was an American innovator and entrepreneur.

The inventor- his achievementsHe founded the Eastman Kodak Company and popularized the use of roll film.

Memorable dateOn the 4th of September 1888, G.W. Eastman received a patent for a roll-film camera and registered the trademark“Kodak”.

Why that name?The name “Kodak” came from Eastman’s fondness for the letter “K.” He has been finding it a “strong sort of letter.” He and his mother devised the name Kodak with an anagram set.

How did the first camera look like?

The most common form was a cardboard or plastic box with a lens in one end and film at the other.

Catchy adevertising“You press the button, we’ll do the rest” was their well known slogan.

What was the Brownie?The Brownie was a series of simple and inexpensive box type cameras made by Kodak. It was better than the anterior Kodak camera.

The first model of BrowniePhotography became more widespread when the Kodak Brownie was released in 1900. It cost $1.

Brownie’s meritThe Brownie has popularized low-cost photography and introduced the concept of the snapshot.

Eastman’s health problemsIn his final two years, Eastman was in intense pain caused by a disorder affecting his spine. At the age of 74 he became thin and weak, and he had difficulty standing.

Sucide deathOn the 14th of March 1932, Eastman shot himself in the heart, leaving a note which read "To my friends: my work is done”.
