Magdalen Graduate Accommodation This document, created by the Magdalen MCR Committee, is designed to provide additional information for Magdalen graduate students about the single rooms that Magdalen provides. It includes current room gradings (A to H, from most expensive to least expensive), comments from students that have lived in the rooms (where available), photographs and maps. It is worthwhile noting that these are subjective opinions and opinions of the same rooms may vary. You can also get some idea of the outside of some Magdalen accommodation by using Google Map’s “Street View” function which has panoramic photographs of most Oxford streets: http://maps.google.com/ Some further accommodation about Magdalen accommodation is available here: http://www.magd.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/accommodation

ST CLEMENTS

11A ST CLEMENT’S 11A St Clement’s is located east of the Magdalen Bridge, just under a five minute walk from the Magdalen Lodge – making it the furthest located graduate accommodation from the college. Although conveniently located by the Cowley Road (perfect for shopping, dining and night-life), 11A St. Clement’s is noisy due to the St Clement’s roundabout. There are four rooms in 11A St Clements, and all four occupants share one bathroom. The kitchen is reasonably-sized and includes a dining table, but is poorly maintained and not well equipped. It contains laundry facilities. These rooms are regarded as the worst in College and are accordingly also the cheapest.

ROOM 1:

12

Grade: GH Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom or toilet. 4 people share one bathroom. Kitchen: Reasonably-sized but pretty ill-equipped and poorly-maintained kitchen, with a medium-sized dining table. Natural light: Not much, small window onto St Clement’s St. Noise: Quite a lot of noise from the roundabout on St Clement’s. Other comments: These are pretty much the worst rooms in College. They are tiny and poorly appointed.

13

ROOM 2:

14

Grade: GH Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom or toilet. 4 people share one bathroom. Kitchen: Reasonably-sized but pretty ill-equipped and poorly-maintained kitchen, with a medium-sized dining table. Natural light: Not much, small window onto St Clement’s St. Noise: Quite a lot of noise from the roundabout on St Clement’s. Other comments: These are pretty much the worst rooms in College.

15

ROOM 3:

16

Grade: GH Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom or toilet. 4 people share one bathroom. Kitchen: Reasonably-sized but pretty ill-equipped and poorly-maintained kitchen, with a medium-sized dining table. Natural light: Not much, small window onto St Clement’s St. Noise: Quite a lot of noise from the roundabout on St Clement’s. Other comments: These are pretty much the worst rooms in College.

17

ROOM 4:

18

Grade: GH Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom or toilet. 4 people share one bathroom. Kitchen: Reasonably-sized but pretty ill-equipped and poorly-maintained kitchen, with a medium-sized dining table. Natural light: Not much, small window onto St Clement’s St. Noise: Quite a lot of noise from the roundabout on St Clement’s. Other comments: These are pretty much the worst rooms in College. Room 4 is a bit longer than the others, but it is extremely narrow for its length.

COWLEY PLACE Cowley Place is located east of the Magdalen Bridge, again just under a ten minute walk from the Magdalen Lodge and just off the St Clement’s roundabout – it is somewhat isolated from the rest of College accommodation locations. The location is very convenient to the Iffley Rd sports facilities, and also to the Cowley Rd shops etc. however certain rooms experience noise from passing school-children in the morning (Magdalen College School is next-door) and from the nearby Cape of Good Hope pub in the evenings. Cowley Place itself is much quieter than St Clement’s or the High Street. One particular advantage of Cowley place are the en suite facilities (either shower and toilet, or shower only and toilet shared by two or three). The large kitchens are shared by up to seven occupants, however fridge-space can be problematic at times. Two of the three rooms in Cowley Place 2 have separate (but small) study/storage rooms. There are free laundry facilities in Cowley Place (laundry in most other College locations is charged). The basement rooms at Cowley Place are less desirable, due to an almost complete lack of natural light (although they are also less noisy than other flats).

21

2 COWLEY PLACE

ROOM 1:

22

Grade: GC Bathroom: En suite bathroom across the hall with basin, shower and toilet. Kitchen: Access to medium-sized kitchen downstairs. Natural light: Medium, depends on time of day. Ground floor, so if the curtains are open everyone on the street can see in. Noise: Some noise from school in the morning and from patrons of the Cape of Good Hope at night. Other comments: Unlike the rest of Cowley Place 2, Room 1 does not have a separate study across the hall as this is a college storage space.

23

ROOM 2:

24

Grade: GB Bathroom: En suite bathroom across the hall with toilet, shower and basin. Kitchen: Ready access to a kitchen, but the kitchen is described as "bad...fan doesn't work well, no fridge, no real freezer anywhere in the building, dryer doesn't heat up so clothes don't actually dry, sink clogs regularly, electric stove is never right temp". Natural light: Natural light depends on time of day, but leaving curtains open is impossible when showering, changing or even just chilling in room b/c of boys' school windows next door that look right in on you all day. Noise: People from the Cape and St. Hilda's can get quite loud at night. Ditto with garbage collection and school boys arriving in the morning. Other comments: I wouldn't go out of my way to live here again, isolated location--you meet no one in this building/street!

25

ROOM 3:

Grade: GB Bathroom: En suite bathroom across the hall with basin, shower and toilet. Kitchen: Access to medium-sized kitchen downstairs. Natural light: Medium, depends on time of day. Ground floor, so if the curtains are open everyone on the street can see in. Noise: Some noise from school in the morning and from patrons of the Cape of Good Hope at night. Other comments: Study/storage space across the hall is useful, but very small.

26

KITCHEN:

Kitchen shared between Cowley Place 2 and 3.

27

3 COWLEY PLACE

ROOM 1:

28

Grade: GD Bathroom: En suite bathroom. Shower, basin & toilet. Access to kitchen. Almost no natural light (basement room). Not particularly noisy. Other comments: Room 1 is a basement room which gives it so little natural light most of the year that it's almost ridiculous.

29

ROOM 2:

30

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom, shower and toilet. Kitchen: Access to kitchen, but the kitchen is small. Natural light: Decent amount of natural light – not too much. Noise: Not noisy. Other comments: The room is a 2-room en suite. However, the bathroom and shower are *extremely* small. Free laundry in the Cowley building also is a plus.

31

ROOM 3:

32

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom, shower and toilet. Kitchen: Access to kitchen, but the kitchen is small. Natural light: Decent amount of natural light – not too much. Noise: Not noisy. Other comments: The room is a 2-room en suite. However, the bathroom and shower are *extremely* small. Free laundry in the Cowley building also is a plus.

33

ROOM 4:

34

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom, shower and toilet. Kitchen: Access to kitchen, but the kitchen is small. Natural light: Decent amount of natural light – not too much. Noise: Not noisy. Other comments: Like room 2 and 3, room 4 is a 2-room en suite. However, the bathroom and shower are *extremely* small. Free laundry in the Cowley building also is a plus.

35

KITCHEN:

Kitchen shared between Cowley Place 2 and 3.

36

4 COWLEY PLACE

ROOM 1:

37

Grade: GC Bathroom: Ensuite bathroom, shower and toilet. Kitchen: The kitchen is reasonable. Light: Not "much" natural light, but not "little". Can be a bit gloomy in the morning and evening. Quite bright in the middle of the day. Noise: Quite noisy - Magdalen School next door.

38

Room 2:

39

Grade: GC Bathroom: En suite bathroom, toilet and shower. Kitchen: The kitchen is reasonable. Light: Not "much" natural light, but not "little". Can be a bit gloomy in the morning and evening. Quite bright in the middle of the day. Noise: Quite noisy - Magdalen School next door.

40

ROOM 3:

41

Grade: GC Bathroom: Ensuite bathroom, shower and toilet. Kitchen: Yes. The kitchen is reasonable. Light: Not "much" natural light, but not "little". Can be a bit gloomy in the morning and evening. Quite bright in the middle of the day. Noise: Quite noisy - Magdalen School next door.

42

ROOM 4:

43

Grade: GC Bathroom: Shower and basin in the room, toilet just outside the room (sharing 2 toilets between 3 or 4). Kitchen: The kitchen is downstairs. It is comparatively spacious though the furnishings are miserly and the fridge space inadequate if used by all those who share it. Light: Decent natural light. There is adequate natural light at the end of the room closest to the window, where the desk is. There is little to no useful natural light in the alcove where the shower and basin are located. Noise: Not particularly noisy. The main problem is with the location and construction of doors. Because of a fire door creating a closed corridor between this room and the stairwell, this room is more sheltered than some. However, the doors in 4 Cowley Place are loud and, because of its location, the front door downstairs, as well as the fire door just mentioned and the toilet door located between that fire door and the door to this room are all too readily audible. Other comments: Strange arrangement of having a shower in the room with no real division. Free washing and drying facilities are available (though not of industrial size, never serviced and rarely cleaned).

44

ROOM 5:

45

Grade: GC Bathroom: Ensuite shower, no toilet. 3 people share one toilet. Kitchen: Kitchen shared between 5. Kitchen is good. Light: Very little natural light (especially outside Summer months) due to facing directly onto a neighbouring building. Noise: Noise carries easily through building, eg doors slamming, people talking/entertaining in their rooms. Quiet with respect to external noise.

46

ROOM 6:

47

Grade: GC Bathroom: En suite shower, no toilet. 3 people share one toilet. Kitchen: Kitchen shared between 5. Kitchen is good. Very little natural light (especially outside Summer months) due to facing directly onto a neighbouring building. Noise: Noise carries easily through building, eg doors slamming, people talking/entertaining in their rooms. Quiet with respect to external noise.

48

ROOM 7:

49

Grade: GC Bathroom: En suite shower, no toilet. 3 people share one toilet. Kitchen: Kitchen shared between 5. Kitchen is good. Very little natural light (especially outside Summer months) due to facing directly onto a neighbouring building. Noise: Noise carries easily through building, eg doors slamming, people talking/entertaining in their rooms. Quiet with respect to external noise.

63 HIGH STREET Living on the High has the advantage of proximity to College (the Magdalen Library is directly opposite) and the city-centre, but means the street-front rooms can be very noisy due to passing traffic and pedestrians. There is a medium-sized back garden with bicycle sheds available for rent from College, and a grassy lawn with some benches. There is a washer and dryer in 63D shared by all occupants, which requires a laundry card (£1.20 per cycle). 63A: The first room is street-facing and ground-floor, and experiences a lot of internal and external noise. The second room faces the back garden, and the third is in the basement, meaning there is very little natural light. The toilet/bathroom is shared by three occupants, as is the kitchen, which is small and has no windows, nor a kitchen table. 63B: 63B is a two-storey self-contained, grade A flat, with en suite bathroom, toilet and shower, private kitchen and lounge area. It is garden-facing so quiet and enjoys reasonably good natural light. The bedroom is only large enough for a single-bed, but the lounge is spacious. 63C: 63C is a two-bedroom flat. The bathroom is therefore only shared by two, but does not have a shower (bath only). The kitchen is small, without a dining table, but big enough for two, easy to keep clean and includes a large fridge/freezer. The street-front room is large, but also very noisy. 63D: 63D has two toilets and four showers among the five occupants. The kitchen is very small for five people, with only a small bar-fridge and no dining table or freezer. The garden-facing rooms are very quiet, but also small, with some issues of draft due to the old-nature of the windows; the two street-facing rooms experience high-level light and noise from the High. 63E: 63E has only one bathroom which is shared by five occupants – as the toilet is in the same room as the shower, this is at times very inconvenient. The kitchen is functional but very small for five people, there is no dining table or freezer. 63F: 63F is a two-person flat, with a reasonable kitchen and one bathroom/toilet. An advantage of the flat is the dedicated living room, however Room 1 is extremely small. As 63F is on the third floor, the noise-level is very reasonable.

63A HIGH STREET

ROOM 1:  Photos and comments unavailable as the room was previously used as a storage space until 2009-10. Grade: GG

52

ROOM 2:

53

Grade: GG Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom. Two people share one toilet. Basin in room. Kitchen: Kitchen is small, but main problem is that there are no windows so very claustrophobic. Also, the fridge has been not working very well all year round and nothing has been done about it: in particular, the freezer in it is completely broken, and water drips on the food all the time, thus making it hard to use. It would be nice if it could be replaced and also if there could be a functioning small freezer. The hob is quite old, but OK. Natural light: The room has very little natural light. Noise: Not very much, but noise can be heard from upstairs.

54

ROOM 3:

55

Grade: GF No ensuite bathroom. No ensuite toilet. Two people share one toilet. Basin in room. Kitchen access: Kitchen is small, but main problem is that there are no windows so very claustrophobic. Natural light: The room has very very little natural light, since it is in the basement. It always seems very dark unfortunately. Noise: Not very much, but noise can be heard from upstairs.

Grade: Flat/GA [if not taken as a single graduate flat] Bathroom: En suite bathroom, toilet and shower. Kitchen: Self-contained kitchen in flat. Natural light: Reasonably good, depending on the time of day. Noise: Not noisy, faces away from High Street on to garden of 63 High Street property. Other comments: 63B is a two-story self-contained flat with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and lounge area. The bedroom is very small and can only really fit a single bed, but the lounge is reasonably spacious and the bathroom and kitchen are adequate.

60

63C HIGH STREET

ROOM 1:

61

Grade: GC Bathroom: Bathroom is effectively en suite as 63C is a shared two bedroom apartment. Bath, no shower. Kitchen. Yes, good but small. Shared between two. Natural light. Reasonable, big windows on High Street. Noise. Very noisy - big windows on high street, bus and traffic noise all night long. Other comments: 63C is a two bed apartment with a bathroom and kitchen. 63C1 is a very large, spacious room with high ceilings and big windows. The bathroom is fine, but the absence of a shower is very annoying. The kitchen is fine for two people sharing.

62

ROOM 2:

63

Grade: GD Bathroom: Bathroom is effectively en suite as 63C is a two bedroom apartment. Bath, no shower. Kitchen. Yes, good but small. Shared between two. Natural light. Excellent, lots of big windows facing onto the back garden. Noise. Not very noisy - facing away from the high street into the back garden. Other comments: 63C is a two bed apartment with a bathroom and kitchen. 63C2 is a reasonably sized but awkwardly shaped room and includes a small, even more weirdly shaped lounge area. The bathroom is fine, but the absence of a shower is very annoying. The kitchen is fine for two people living together.

KITCHEN:

63D HIGH STREET

ROOM 1:

66

Grade: GF Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. Share 4 showers with 5 people. Share 2 toilets with 5 people. Kitchen: Access to a kitchen, but it is small and has no table. Light: Reasonable, faces onto garden of 64 High Street and gets some light. Noise: Pretty quiet.

67

ROOM 2:

68

Grade: GF Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. Share 4 showers with 5 people. Share 2 toilets with 5 people. Kitchen: Access to a kitchen, but it is small and has no table. Light: Reasonable Noise: Not too bad.

69

ROOM 3:

70

Grade: GG Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. Share 4 showers with 5 people. Share 2 toilets with 5 people. Kitchen: Access to a kitchen, but it is small and has no table. Natural light: Just about enough natural light (1 window), although gets dark in room way before sunset. Noise: Yes, faces High Street - lots of buses. Does have double glazing, but closing windows makes room incredibly stuffy. Other comments: smaller than 63D rooms 4 and 5.

71

ROOM 4:

72

Grade: GE Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. Share 4 showers with 5 people. Share 2 toilets with 5 people. Kitchen: Access to a kitchen, but it is small and has no table. Not much natural light. North facing. It is very noisy.

73

ROOM 5:

74

Grade: GF Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. Share 4 showers with 5 people. Share 2 toilets with 5 people. Kitchen: Access to a kitchen, but it is small and has no table. Really only one person can cook at a time. The fridge is also very small making it difficult for 5 people to stock food in it. Also no fan/ventilation. Natural light: Yes, large window. But the window doesn't close properly despite maintenance. Noise. Room is on the opposite side to the high street so no noise at all and cannot hear noise from neighbouring rooms. Other comments: the building has a damp issue, and the showers are mouldy. There is also no social area in the flat due to the size of the kitchen. There is also not enough storage space for clothes.

63E HIGH STREET

ROOM 1:

83

Grade: GE Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom. Five people share the bathroom. Five people share a toilet. Kitchen: Easy access to a small but functional kitchen. Light: Lots of natural light. Other comments: the room is a decent size, but the one problem with 63E in general is that we have no separate toilet other than the one in the bathroom on this floor.

84

ROOM 5:

85

Grade: GD Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom. Five people share the bathroom. Five people share a toilet. Kitchen: Easy access to a small but functional kitchen. Light: Good. Noise: Not much. One problem with 63E in general is that we have no separate toilet on this floor other than the one in the bathroom.

63F HIGH STREET

ROOM 1:

Grade: GE Bathroom: This is a two person flat, so two people share one en suite bathroom, toilet. Kitchen in flat, used by two people. Kitchen is reasonable. Good natural light. Noise: reasonably noisy as the flat is on High Street, but the flat is on the third floor. Other comments: Flat is shared between two people and has a dedicated living room. The bedroom of Room 1 is tiny and not very nice.

88

ROOM 2:

89

Grade: GD Bathroom: This is a two person flat, so two people share one en suite bathroom and toilet. Kitchen in flat, used by two people. Kitchen is reasonable. Good natural light. Noise: reasonably noisy as the flat is on High Street, but the flat is on the third floor. Other comments: Flat is shared between two people and has a dedicated living room. The bedroom, while bigger than room 1, is still very small and not very nice.

LOUNGE AND KITCHEN:

91

DAUBENY AND PROFESSOR’S HOUSE Daubeny contains some of the nicer (Grade A/B) rooms in College. The nine rooms are en suite (bathroom and toilet). There are two communal kitchens in Daubeny, although one is literally cupboard-sized. There are no communal dining areas. Daubeny building backs onto the Botanic Gardens, and is directly opposite the Magdalen Lodge. It is set further back from the High than other High St locations, and noise in the street-front rooms is reasonable due to double-glazing. Internally, Daubeny is very quiet. There are coin-operated washing machines in the Daubeny building. Professor’s House, like Daubeny, has an excellent location on the High (although somewhat set back) overlooking the Cherwell and Botanic Gardens. There is a shared kitchen on the ground floor described as ‘excellent’ which includes a dining table, and the rooms have en suite bathrooms. These are some of the nicest rooms in College. The kitchen contains free laundry facilities.

92

DAUBENY

ROOM 1:

93

94

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom and toilet. Kitchen. It has easy access to a spacious cupboard containing a sink-and-two-hotplates. Light: It has a lot of natural light. Noise. There is some noise from the street and the Botanic Garden during the day that is adequately dealt with by the double-glazing. Internally, there is no noise from other rooms, save for the “Magdalen Doors” phenomenon. Other comments: Two-room en suite, with a small bedroom and a large lounge/study area. This is a very large room, but it is very long and not very wide which makes the space difficult to use effectively.

95

ROOM 2:

96

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom and toilet. Kitchen. It has easy access to a spacious cupboard containing a sink-and-two-hotplates. Light: It has a reasonable amount of natural light. Noise. There is some noise from the street and the Botanic Garden during the day that is adequately dealt with by the double-glazing. Internally, there is no noise from other rooms, save for the “Magdalen Doors” phenomenon. Other comments: Because it is notionally a disabled-access room, it has a lot of space. Unfortunately, it has the standard minimally-sized furniture (especially the desk and wardrobe), so, while pleasant, much of this additional space compared to many rooms is of no great advantage.

97

ROOM 3:

98

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom, including basin, toilet, and shower corner. Access to kitchen. Yes, it has access to a "kitchen." The kitchen is very bad: it is so small that it might as well not be there. It is a remodelled closet and it is impossible to use anything other than the microwave. Two people cannot fit at the same time and the door, when opened, swings halfway into the room. For all intensive purposes, it is as if there were no kitchen at all. Natural light. Yes. One south-facing window. Noise. Yes. The door opens onto the stairway and you can hear every single person coming and going. Conversation echoes from the hallway into the room with uncanny clarity. Other comments: It is very cold and drafty during the winter. The window does not seal.

99

ROOM 4:

100

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom, including basin, toilet, and shower. Yes. Two large bay windows. Noise. Faces away from high street, not too loud except for doors and conversations in the hallway.

101

ROOM 5:

102

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom, including basin, toilet, and shower corner. Access to kitchen. Yes, it has access to a "kitchen." The kitchen is very bad: it is so small that it might as well not be there. It is a remodelled closet and it is impossible to use anything other than the microwave. Two people cannot fit at the same time and the door, when opened, swings halfway into the room. For all intensive purposes, it is as if there were no kitchen at all. Natural light. Yes. Two south-facing windows. Noise: Faces away from the High Street, not bad.

103

ROOM 6:

104

Grade: GA Bathroom: Ensuite bathroom (shower). Ensuite toilet. Kitchen: Easy access, but the kitchen is basically a joke (smaller than my bathroom, space for only one person at a time). Natural light: Yes. Skylight, which can't be dimmed or closed. Noise: Acceptable (facing High Street & Magdalen tower, but the windows are good. Sometimes there are musicians practicing in the Daubeny lab, which can be heard in the room. Other comments: The washing machines are downstairs (coin operated).

105

ROOM 7:

106

Grade: GA Bathroom: is en suite, with toilet and shower. Kitchen: There is a kitchen on the same floor but it is disappointingly small - about the size of a large broom cupboard, with two small electric hot plates, one sink, one small bar fridge and one microwave. Natural light: room has a skylight above the entrance which lets in a lot of natural light (but there is no blind for it!). The room has one large window which has a wonderful view overlooking the rose garden and Magdalen tower. Noise. The window is double glazed, so when both window layers are pulled down it is pretty effective at keeping the street noise out. Other comments: It is slightly smaller than some of the others in Daubeny, but it has been recently refurbished and is very clean and modern inside. It's the best college room I've lived in so far. The view is pretty, the backyard is the Botanical Gardens, easy access to Rose Lane and Christ Church meadow, and there's a handy bike shed near the drive entrance.

107

ROOM 8:

108

Grade: GA Bathroom: Ensuite bathroom (shower) and toilet. Natural light: two windows, thus much natural light. Kitchen: easy access to the kitchen, which is nevertheless very small! Noise: It is not noisy!

109

ROOM 9:

110

Grade: GA Bathroom: En suite bathroom (shower) and toilet. Natural light: two windows, thus much natural light, Kitchen: easy access to the kitchen, which is nevertheless very small and a bit useless for cooking. Noise: Not much noise.

118

Grade: GB Bathroom: En suite bathroom, with a shower (very small) and toilet. Kitchen: Access to excellent kitchen on ground floor. Lots of natural light, overlooking botanic gardens and River Cherwell. Not noisy, facing away from High street. Other comments: The room is very small, but very nice.

119

ROOM 6:

120

Grade: GB Bathroom: En suite bathroom, with a shower (very small) and toilet. Kitchen: Access to excellent kitchen on ground floor. Good natural light through big window onto botanical gardens. Not very noisy. Faces away from high street, but tourists in botanical gardens can be loud. Other comments: The room is very small. The bathroom is really impressively tiny. Getting into the shower is no mean feat.

GATEHOUSE AND ROSE LANE The Gatehouse has two rooms, each very spacious and with en suite bathrooms. There is access to the small kitchen in the adjoining Rose Lane building (see below). The location is very convenient, on Rose Lane just off the High, but set back far enough that the rooms are less noisy than the High St (street-front) apartments. The Gatehouse is normally reserved for Hitchen Scholars (if desired). Rose Lane is just off the High, directly opposite Magdalen College. It is a very convenient location to the city centre, College, Christchurch Meadow, and has a spacious backyard and a covered area for bicycle storage (free). There are ten rooms in Rose Lane, with two showers, one bath and five toilets in total. Rooms also have in-room basins. The kitchen is of a reasonable size, with two fridges and one freezer. However, it is also often used by the neighbouring undergraduates. There is no communal dining area or dining table. There is a washing machine and dryer in the Rose Lane kitchen (charged).

123

GATEHOUSE

ROOM 1A:

124

Grade: GB Bathroom: En suite bathroom, with a bath and shower and a toilet. Kitchen: Access to small kitchen in Rose Lane building. Light: Reasonable natural light although essentially a basement room. Not very noisy. Noise from High Street is audible, but not unbearable. Other comments: The room is really quite big and the bathroom is a very big en suite by comparison with other College rooms. The room is reserved for Hitchen Scholars (if there are any), although they can choose another room if they desire.

125

ROOM 1B:

126

Grade: GB Bathroom: En suite bathroom, with a bath and shower and a toilet. Kitchen: Access to small kitchen in Rose Lane building. Light: Reasonable natural light although essentially a basement room. Not very noisy. Noise from High Street is audible, but not unbearable. Other comments: The room is really quite big and the bathroom is a very big en suite by comparison with other College rooms. The room is reserved for Hitchen Scholars (if there are any), although they can choose another room if they desire.

127

ROSE LANE

ROOM 1:

128

Grade: GD No ensuite bathroom. There is one shower and one bathroom on the groundfloor, another shower on the third floor, so two showers and one bath shared between ten. There are five toilets between the ten of us. Basin in room. Kitchen. It is a decent kitchen, reasonable size, 2* fridges and 1 freezer. It also contains a washing machine & dryer which is convenient. One problem is that there is no kitchen in Gatehouse, so a number of undergraduates end up using the Rose Lane Kitchen - it's not big enough for that many people trying to use it. Natural light: Pretty reasonable. Noise. It's pretty quiet Other comments: Room 1 has a damp problem and a tatty carpet.

129

ROOM 2:

130

Grade: GD No ensuite bathroom. There is one shower and one bathroom on the groundfloor, another shower on the third floor, so two showers and one bath shared between ten. There are five toilets between the ten of us. Basin in room. Kitchen. It is a decent kitchen, reasonable size, 2* fridges and 1 freezer. It also contains a washing machine & dryer which is convenient. One problem is that there is no kitchen in Gatehouse, so a number of undergraduates end up using the Rose Lane Kitchen - it's not big enough for that many people trying to use it. Natural light. Plenty of natural light - two big windows, although there is a wall directly opposite. Noise. It's pretty quiet

132

Grade: GF No ensuite bathroom. There is one shower and one bathroom on the groundfloor, another shower on the third floor, so two showers and one bath shared between ten. It also contains a washing machine & dryer which is convenient. One problem is that there is no kitchen in Gatehouse, so a number of undergraduates end up using the Rose Lane Kitchen - it's not big enough for that many people trying to use it. Natural light. Some natural light, but it depends on the time of day. Noise. It's pretty quiet.

133

ROOM 4:

134

Grade: GE No ensuite bathroom. There is one shower and one bathroom on the groundfloor, another shower on the third floor, so two showers and one bath shared between ten. There are five toilets between the ten of us. Basin in room. Access to kitchen. Yes. The kitchen is reasonable. It is a good size if only one person is cooking and is reasonably well-equiped. However, it is shared between 12 people and so there are often times when there isn't room to cook. There is also no table and chairs in the kitchen, which means no space to hang out with flatmates other than in own rooms. Natural light: Yes. Two large windows = lots of sunshine. Noise. If people are being very loud on High Street you can hear them, but this isn't too bad. The walls are extremely thin, though so even reasonably quiet conversations can be heard by neighbours. Other comments: Lack of shared eating space and the large number of people sharing the kitchen. Room is big and sunny.

135

ROOM 5:

136

Grade: GF No ensuite bathroom. There is one shower and one bathroom on the groundfloor, another shower on the third floor, so two showers and one bath shared between ten. It also contains a washing machine & dryer which is convenient. One problem is that there is no kitchen in Gatehouse, so a number of undergraduates end up using the Rose Lane Kitchen - it's not big enough for that many people trying to use it. Light: Fairly good natural light. Noise: Some noise from High Street but one gets used to it. Other comments: This is a very satisfactory room. The wonderful view of Magdalen tower and the amount of sunlight it gets during the day more than compensate for the rather threadbare carpet and garish curtains. Furnishings are standard, although there is a washbasin, and two desks, which is useful. You can hear the traffic on the High Street but the noise isn't deafening and I got used to it very quickly. Rose Lane kitchen is fine and also has a washing machine and tumble dryer.

A large number of Magdalen graduates live in the Holywell accommodation, which consists of Holywell Ford House, the Stables, and Holywell Ford Quads. These are located behind the deer park, and accessed by Addison’s Walk or Longwall Street – the former is poorly lit so a torch may be needed after dark. The location is extremely peaceful, with no traffic noise and beautiful surroundings. Holywell has a large outdoor garden/BBQ area, including a vegetable patch where students are able to tend their own plots. The squash courts are also at Holywell, and the location is convenient to the Magdalen sports grounds. Furthermore there is a computer room situated at Hollywell Ford and the graduate parking facilities are also here. It is about a five minute walk (through College) to the High. Laundry facilities are available but can be problematic due to the large number of students sharing. Holywell Ford House Holywell Ford House contains eleven rooms, of varying grades/standards with some rooms having a particular problem with too little light. The House is spacious and charming, with a brook running beneath. Bathrooms are shared by about six, and toilets by about four, with in-room basins. Some students complain of poor mobile phone reception due to the thick stone walls of the House. The kitchen is shared by all eleven, and is very large with a good-sized dining table and good facilities (two fridges, oven, microwave and much bench-space). Holywell Stables Holywell Stables is comprised of 4 rooms, which are the least popular rooms at the Holywell complex. The rooms vary in quality and the kitchen is old, small and not particularly functional. The 4 occupants share 1 shower and 1 toilet. Sink basins are located in each room. Although on the whole, Holywell Ford is a quiet location, the Stables are located by a gate which is in regular use by other residents, and this can prove noisy. Holywell Ford Quad The Quad is separated into 6 flats, with 6 rooms in each flat. Ground floor and mid-floor rooms in each flat are large and spacious, however the top two rooms are attic rooms and generally smaller. Although the kitchens are small, they are well-maintained with dining space for 4. Six people share 1 shower, 1 bath and 2 toilets with sink basins in each room. Generally speaking, there is acceptable natural light in the Quad flats; some ground floor rooms have French doors opening onto the quad. The rooms vary in size across the flats, with Quad 5, in particular, having larger rooms and a larger kitchen compared to the others.

Grade: GD No ensuite bathroom. 6 people share one shower room, one room toilet with a bath, and another toilet. Basin in room. Access to kitchen. Yes, the kitchen is reasonable, although it's pretty small. Not a great amount of natural light, but it's good in the summer. It doesn't matter, it's a lovely layout with enough artificial light. Noise depends on housemates as the walls are not thick.

179

Grade: GD Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. Six people share a bathroom and a shower room (with one shower) on the second floor of the staircase. No en suite toilet. Six share two toilets, one in the bathroom and another in a separate WC room with sink. Basin in room. Kitchen access? Yes. Natural light? Not much. The room is on the ground floor - trees and foliage see to it that not much light gets through. Noise? Some. The room is next to the front door, so you hear when people come in and out. It is also next to the kitchen, so same problem there. Due to location of water pipes, you can also tell when people are showering. Not necessarily a bad thing, really, as you know when it's free. Other comments? The room is large and apart from above relatively minor problems is very pleasant. There is a sitting area with a couch, coffee table and a couple of arm-chairs (all distinctly minimalist, hall-of-residence style). Best thing though are the French doors that lead onto the garden. Great in the summer months

LONGWALL Long wall House is conveniently located on Longwall Street, opposite the college library and on the corner of the High Street. The house is shared between 10 occupants, with 2 showers and 3 toilets between everyone: and no sink basins in the rooms. The recently refurbished kitchen is large and has been described as excellent. The rooms vary significantly in size, although some of the smaller rooms actually come as a two-room set up (sleep & study area). Longwall house is especially noisy with rooms at the front facing noise from the traffic and rooms at the back facing noise from the adjacent undergraduate accommodation.

264

LONGWALL HOUSE

ROOM 2:

265

Grade: GE Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom. There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one has showers, so the 2 showers are shared between 10 people. 3 toilets between 10 people. No basin in room. Access to kitchen. Yes, the kitchen is recently refurbished and excellent. Not much natural light -- panes are translucent & cannot be opened (privacy & noise reduction). It is noisy - it faces Longwall St. Other comments: needs a fresh coat of paint; good spacious quality.

266

ROOM 3:  Pictures unavailable as this room was previously not in use. Grade: GG. Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one has showers, so the 2 showers are shared between 10 people. 3 toilets between 10 people. No basin in room. Access to kitchen. Yes, the kitchen is recently refurbished and excellent. Decent natural light from the windows that face onto Longwall House back quad. Not too noisy as it faces away from Longwall St, but there can be noise from the undergraduate houses on the back quad. Other comments: This room is pretty small.

267

ROOM 4:

268

Grade: GE Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom. There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one has showers, so the 2 showers are shared between 10 people. 3 toilets between 10 people. No basin in room. Good access to kitchen, large in size and well equipped (with washer/dryer!) shared by 9 people. Very large windows - lots of natural light. Noise: Can be noisy as room overlooks Longwall street, but not too bad if windows are closed. Other comments: Room is very large.

269

ROOM 5:

270

Grade: GG. No ensuite bathroom. Nine people (there are nine in the house) share two showers. No ensuite toilet. Five of us share two toilets. No basin in room. Access to kitchen. Kitchen is larger than most, relatively modern, and has essential appliances. The natural light is adequate. Only one window in each room actually opens, so airing it out is difficult. Because the rooms are at the back of the house, they get very little sunlight (when the sun is out). Very noisy. The whole of Longwall House is incredibly noisy. It is less than a metre from Longwall Street, which has an extremely busy flow of traffic. It is in a quad with about four or five undergraduate houses. Other comments: 5 actually comprises two small rooms. Only a person who likes the idea of two separate (and small) rooms should consider this - and if so, take the upstairs equivalent which is far less noisy. You can argue that having a different room for study purposes is nice, but it gets claustrophobic and it is, as emphasised, noisy. The fact that these rooms are graded the same as others in the house is odd.

271

ROOM 6:

272

Grade: GE Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one has showers, so the 2 showers are shared between 10 people. No en suite toilet. 3 toilets between 10 people. No basin in room, but it is right next to the bathroom. Access to kitchen. The kitchen is recently renovated and in very good condition, on the floor below. Not much natural light. Only a narrow avenue separates Longwall House and School House, so it gets little light, even when it is reasonably sunny. Not particularly noisy as it faces away from the road, Traffic is not a problem. However, it is opposite the School House kitchen, and at the back of Harveys (Ed: a popular sandwich shop), so expect some regular noise. Other comments: It is larger than several of the other rooms in Longwall House, and probably the best of the G grade rooms.

273

ROOM 7:

274

Grade: GE Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one has showers, so the 2 showers are shared between 10 people. No en suite toilet. 3 toilets between 10 people. No basin in room, but it is right next to the bathroom. Kitchen: The kitchen is recently renovated and in very good condition, on the floor below. Light: Decent natural light from the large windows facing on to Longwall Street. Noise: Pretty noisy as it faces on to Longwall Street on the second floor.

275

ROOM 8:

276

Grade: GD Bathroom: No en suite bathroom. There are two bathrooms in the house, but only one has showers, so the 2 showers are shared between 10 people. Light: Very good natural light from the large window on to Longwall Street. Noise: Very noisy as it faces on to Longwall Street on the second floor. Other comments: This is a very large room.

279

ROOM 10:

280

Grade: GF Bathroom: No ensuite bathroom. 2 showers between 9 people. No toilet. 4 toilets between 9 people. No basin in the room. Kitchen: Not very easy access. Kitchen is 2 floors below. Kitchen is good. Light: Not much natural light. Noise: Not too noisy, as it faces away from the road, but some noise from undergrads across the way. Other comments: It's smaller than other rooms in the house but also one of the quietest.

281

ROOM 11:

282

Grade: GE No ensuite bathroom. Nine people (there are nine in the house) share two showers. No ensuite toilet. Five of us share two toilets. No basin in room. Access to kitchen.
