LAKE COUNTRY MUSEUM
THIS PHOTO, taken by George Goulding in 1907, shows the location of the creek seen at the upper (west) side of the isthmus. At that time Wood Lake was about four feet higher than Long (later renamed Kalamalka) Lake before a navigation canal was dug. Notice also the scant settlement along the Vernon to Mission Road.
Before a navigation canal was built in 1908, a free- ow-ing creek drained Wood Lake into Long (later renamed Kalamalka) Lake.
Wood Lake was natur-ally about four feet higher than Kalamalka, perhaps ve or six feet higher during the
spring freshet. In some years the water gushed down the creek making passage across the isthmus exceedingly dan-gerous.
Two items in the Vernon News from the time, illustrate: “ ere came near a drown-ing accident last week at the
creek between Wood’s Lake and Long Lake, at the place known as the “railway.” J. Shore attempted to ford the creek, which is much swollen, and his horses were swept o their feet, and he was carried down for some distance by the stream, getting out with much
di culty. A road and bridge is badly needed by the settlers of that vicinity, and we trust that it will be among the rst work of its kind after this year.” (circa 1902)
Two weeks later the news-paper reported another inci-dent: “A. Cary had a narrow
escape last week from losing a valuable horse in the creek at the “railroad,” between Long Lake and Wood’s Lake…” (circa 1902).
Since 1985, the Lake Country Museum has been collecting, preserving and pre-senting the area’s history.

Rockets in the third round, 53rd overall, in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, and is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.
WARREN HENDERSON
Lorne Frey had a pretty good hunch the Kelowna Rockets would be one of the teams to beat during the 2013-14 Western Hockey League campaign.
But even the Rockets’ assistant GM admits the team’s Canadian Hock-ey League-best record comes as a most pleasant surprise.
e No. 1 nation-ally-ranked Rockets, who went unbeaten in December, are current-ly the runaway leaders in the WHL with a 33-4-0-2 record.
Included among the club’s exploits this sea-son is a winning streak of 16 games, as well as a franchise-record 16-game winning streak on the road.
Since Oct. 22, the
Rockets have won 26 of 28 games.
“We knew we were going to be competitive this year but to look at our record now, that’s a surprise and a pretty im-pressive performance,” said Frey, who is also the Rockets’ director of play-er personnel. “No mat-ter which way you slice it, they’ve faced some tough travel, the quality of teams they’ve beaten, the streaks they’ve been on…it’s pretty inspiring.”
As for the main in-gredients to the Rockets’ success this season, Frey points to coaching, team chemistry and depth.
“We’ve had great coaching from Ryan (Huska) and Danny (Lambert) and the rest of the sta ,” added Frey. “We’ve also got really good players, but prob-ably the biggest thing is
their closeness, the guys get along great and that shows on the ice.
“We have guys with good character who don’t give up and who com-pete hard. Our over-all depth and balance is as good as we’ve had and we’ve got 23 players who are all capable of play-ing.”
Coming o a 4-2 win over Vancouver on Sat-urday, the Rockets will be put to the test this week in Alberta, as Ryan Huska’s squad plays four games in ve nights starting Wednesday in Edmonton against the Oil Kings.
Kelowna will vis-it Lethbridge Friday, Medicine Hat Saturday and Calgary Sunday.
By Sunday night, the club will have played 16 of its last 18 games on the road.
Meanwhile, with the WHL’s trade deadline approaching this Friday, the Rockets are busy ex-ploring their options, in-cluding the possibility of adding a forward for the stretch run.
“In some way you have to think if it isn’t broke don’t x it, but on the other hand we’re al-ways looking to make our team better,” said Frey, who will sit down to discuss the team’s needs with GM Bruce Hamilton when he re-turns from the world junior hockey cham-pionship in Sweden. “We want to to put the best team on the ice we possibly can. A lot of teams are in the battle right now and are look-ing to make upgrades, so that makes it tough, too.”

We want to hear your
opinions on issues going
on in our communityThe new year
lurched to life with a round
of shouting about the environment, as our post-industrial, post-lit-erate urban society grap-ples with con icting claims of impending doom.
e release of a group of Greenpeace protest-ers from a Russian pris-on was welcomed by TV news networks desperate to ll the holiday dead zone. Our intrepid Can-adian pair got to describe over and over their bid to hang a strongly worded banner from a Russian o shore oil platform, and their horror when security forces boarded their vessel from helicop-ters and seized it.
In all the fawning interviews, I kept wait-ing for these questions to be asked: What did they think Vladimir Putin’s regime would do? What was the point? How is disrupting one oil plat-form for an hour going to save the planet?
 e Greenpeace “ac-
tivists” claimed this was the rst oil platform to operate above the Arc-tic Circle. So it was a line in the snow, which I’m sure impressed Putin as he ramps up his territor-ial claim to include the North Pole.
Meanwhile, at the South Pole, TV an-chors remained carefully sombre as they reported numerous bids to rescue a scienti c vessel trapped in thick ice. No quips about the predictive abil-ities of climate scientists please!
In fact this ill-fated voyage was a re-enact-ment of Sir Douglas
Mawson’s 1913 exped-ition, with pro-global warming news outlets BBC and e Guard-ian aboard to capture the melting wrought by a century of industrial ex-pansion.
e rescue e orts (from a Russian ship by Chinese helicopters) also disrupted an Australian icebreaker’s supply trip for one of the real scien-ti c expeditions working in Antarctica.
Sceptics had great fun with the Antarctic de-bacle, as they did earli-er with the resurgence of Arctic ice that trapped climate tourists.
As is normal in the Internet age, the climate debate has split into two fanatical factions, each of which promotes the most extreme examples it can nd to prop up its version of truth. ey call each other “warm-ists” and “deniers” among other pithy names.
Greenpeace is now known in B.C. as part of our Team America an-ti-tar sands brigade. ey
got o to a good start in 2014 by selectively seiz-ing on reports of a new study of mercury con-tamination in northern Alberta.
A “bullseye” of this dreaded neurotoxin has been drawn around oil-sands operations by measuring traces in snow. e study by En-vironment Canada sci-entists isn’t published yet, but Postmedia News re-ported on a presentation in November by the re-searchers.
“ e federal scien-tists stress the mercury loadings around the oil-sands are low compared to the contamination seen in many parts of North America includ-ing southern Ontario and southern Quebec,” the news report states.
is is like the study of polycyclic aromat-ic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in northern Alberta lakes that was twisted into propaganda and fed to the news media last year. is is another group of neuro-
toxins that are far more concentrated in urban areas than around re-mote industry.
Consumption, rather than production of coal, diesel and other fuels produces the vast major-ity of these emissions. I look forward to the study of their e ects around Lost Lagoon and Bur-naby Lake.
Of course, safe levels of these materials have been set by Health Can-ada. You’re more like-ly to get signi cant ex-posure to mercury from a broken uorescent lamp or the mercury amalgam in your old tooth llings than you are from feed-ing ducks at the lake, al-though you might get a whi of PAH when you gas up the car or board the bus.

You’re more like-ly to get signi cant ex-posure to mercury from a broken uorescent lamp or the mercury amalgam in your old tooth llings than you are from feed-ing ducks at the lake, al-though you might get a whi of PAH when you gas up the car or board the bus.

ere’s no doubt that cars and drivers may be at fault. ey may be travelling too fast; or not be paying su cient attention; or be momen-tarily distracted. Ultim-ately, it doesn’t matter whose fault it is. e car weighs 20 times as much as the pedestrian. In any collision between a ped-estrian and a car, the pedestrian always loses.
It’s not considered politically correct to blame victims. But in fact it’s the pedestrian who can do the most to avoid an accident.
Every pedestrian can do two things.
First, make sure driv-ers can see you. Dark clothing blends into dark nights. Wear light col-oured pants or jackets. Better yet, wear a re ect-ive vest. Highway work-ers wear them, for good

reason—they save lives. If a re ective vest of-
fends your fashion sense, at least wear a re ect-ive armband. Or have re- ective stripes on your shoes. Pet stores have re- ective collars for your dog. Bicycle stores have ashing lights you can clip onto your jacket.
Beyond re ective vests and armbands, carry a ashlight. Turn it on whenever there’s a car coming. Even distract-ed drivers will see a light shining in the darkness.
Second, make sure you can see the cars coming.
Walk facing the oncom-ing tra c. If by chance a car should swerve, you still have a chance to leap out of the way. Landing in a ditch is a lot prefer-able to landing in hospi-tal. Or in a morgue.
Like that snowplow driver, I am shocked how often pedestrians sud-denly materialize in my headlights, walking with their backs to me.
Would anyone turn their backs to a load-ed gun pointed at them? Would anyone ignore a landslide or an avalanche roaring towards them? Yet a moving car is just as lethal.
Such foolhardi-ness seems to me to re-veal an unshakable belief in personal immortal-ity. But even if you be-lieve that your immortal soul will survive an acci-dent, are you willing to risk the possibility that your mortal body might spend the rest of its life permanently disabled?
Are you willing to in-
ict a lifelong sense of guilt that some driv-er will feel about having unintentionally maimed and/or killed another human being?
When you go walking at night, wherever you live, please, make sure that drivers can see you. And make equally sure you can see them.

Welcome to 2014 and the month of
New Year’s Resolutions. Apparently less than 25 per cent of resolutions made on New Year’s Day are actually carried on past the rst week of the new year.
One of your resolu-tions may be to get your income tax receipts or-ganized early. If you have a sole proprietor-ship/partnership, you may require someone to do the bookkeeping for you. It would be a good idea to begin early be-cause bookkeepers are extremely busy for the rst three to ve months of the year. Just like there are di erent kinds of accountants specializ-ing in di erent areas of accounting, there are also di erent kinds of book-keepers. Sometimes the accounting/tax rm that prepares your annual taxes can recommend someone.
What you need to look for is a bookkeep-er that also has some tax experience. From a tax perspective, there is nothing more frustrating than receiving something
prepared by a bookkeep-er who doesn’t follow the tax act. e reason being is that it will all need to be reclassi ed in order to put it into the format re-quired by the tax act. e le will take extra time to correct and you will have paid for the work twice. Once to the bookkeeper and once to have it cor-rected and then you need to pay for the tax prepar-ation on top of that.
is is also the rst season after the CPP contribution changes. You need to have de-ducted CPP for all em-ployees who are 60 to 65 years old even if they are currently receiving their CPP and have not had CPP deducted in the past. If you are self em-
ployed, the CPP owing will be calculated when you have your tax re-turn completed. For the employees aged 66 to 70 years old, deduct the CPP unless they pro-vide to you a complet-ed form CPT30 – To elect to stop contributing to the Canada Pension Plan. As an employer if you have forgotten to de-duct the CPP and the employee is no longer employed by you, you are required to pay both the employee and the em-ployer’s share and may be charged penalties and in-terest on the outstanding amount. Anyone who is 70 years old or older can-not contribute to CPP.
e deadline to com-plete and le the T4’s and T4A slips is Fri-day, February 28th. If you decide that you wish to prepare and le your own slips the CRA has provided some com-prehensive videos at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/vdgllry/bsnss/srs-prprngt4t4a-eng.ht-ml?clp=bsnss/srs-pr-prngt4t4a5-eng&f-mt=mp4.
e CRA is now pro-viding other videos to
help you manage your small business. e topics are such items as: Manage on-line mail using My Business Ac-count; GST/HST infor-mation for the new small business; Keeping Rec-ords; Reporting Business Income and Expens-es; Starting your Busi-ness; Payroll for the New Small Business and sev-eral more. ese videos can be found at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/vdgllry/bsnss/menu-eng.html?clp=bsnss/hnncngsrvc-eng&f-mt=mp4 or by going to the CRA website and choosing the Videos tab half way down the page.
You can claim the ‘First-Time Donor’s Super Credit’ if you or your spouse has not claimed a charitable do-nation since 2007 up to a donation limit of $1,000. You can only claim this credit once be-tween 2013 and 2017. Normally the dona-tion tax credit is 15 per cent of the rst $200 and 40 per cent of anything over. is super credit will give you 40 per cent on the rst $200 and 54 per cent on anything
over. CRA cautions that this credit is only avail-able if the donation has been made to a regis-tered charity. To check if the organization is regis-tered please go to www.cra.gc.ca/charitylists .
Also, if you have not led any tax returns for several years, CRA has a voluntary disclo-sures program where-by you can le up to 10 years of back tax returns to bring you up to date without penalty. In order to qualify for this pro-gram, you need to com-ply before you receive the ‘Demand to File Letter’ from CRA. After you le, you may then be-come eligible for the tax credits that you were not previously receiving be-cause you were not ling your taxes.
CRA is also promo-ting use of their on-line services at My Business Account and My Ac-count to make any pay-ments and receive any credits to your bank ac-count. You can also use your bank’s on-line banking service. CRA has closed all the recep-
tion areas of all its of- ces across Canada, so the only means of com-munication is by phone or using the on-line ser-vice. at being said, there are some phishing schemes occurring using the telephone, mail and email. Always make sure whom you are speak-ing with and if unsure,
ask for a number to call them back, especially if they are asking for per-sonal information.

Creekside Players’ presents You Can’t Take It with You a roman-tic comedy written by
George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.
Written by George S. Kaufman and Moss
Hart, this Pulitzer Prize winning comedy pre-miered at the Booth eater in 1936, and had a respectable run of 838 performances.
It has since enjoyed several successful Broad-way revivals and was the basis for the 1938 Acad-emy Award winning lm directed by Frank Capra.
In the play, life is pleasantly daft at the roomy uptown New York City home of Grandpa Vanderhof, a lively little man of 75 who, for the last 35 years, has been determined-ly “relaxing” and having fun. In other words, col-lecting snakes and at-tending commencement exercises.
He has a small income from a rented house and
an interesting family who, like Grandpa, do just as they please.

Creekside Players present Pulitzer Prize winning play, You Can’t Take It with You A new take on the
classic story of Red Rid-ing Hood will lead the 2014 season of Bumber-shoot Children’s e-atre Company from Jan. 16 to 26.
Created in the U.K. by playwright Mike Ken-ny and composer Julian Butler, the story unfolds during a sleepover at grandmother’s house, but the actors and audience are soon magically trans-ported into the forest.
Taking the lead roles will be two seasoned Ke-lowna adult performers, Gwen Plitt as Bridget and a familiar mystery performer who is new to the Bumbershoot stage as Stephen.
e Stage magazine described the U.K. pro-duction as “… a clear and comic telling of the story that the children will re-member all their lives.”
A new Bumbershoot community involve-ment feature will debut with a special Com-munity Night program on Friday, Jan. 10 at the Bumbershoot e-atre which will be part-nered with the RCMP. e 45 minute program will begin at 6 p.m. with Bumbershoot artistic director Tracy Ross read-ing the story of the Red Riding Hood play to a family audience.
RCMP representa-tives will then relate the story to real life experi-ences with strangers and how children should handle them, illustrat-ing the topic of “stranger danger.”
Similar partnered themes will be featured with other Bumbershoot
productions in 2014.Ross described the
music as well as the script, which is leavened with humour, as truly fantastic. e all-ages production will follow the children who de-cide to pass the time at grandmother’s house by acting out their favourite story with things found around the attic, includ-ing clothes from the wardrobe.
Soon what’s real and what’s imagined blur, and the children nd themselves in the deep, dark woods with a wolf tracking them down.
e 2014 productions will be complemented by a new Passport Pro-gram which o ers chil-dren special pre- and post-show activities that they can bring to each production, inspired by the 2014 Bumbershoot theme: “Oh, the places you’ll go…”
Subscriptions for the 2014 season are now available with season and family passes through the Bumbershoot web-site www bumbershoot-threatre com .
Bumbershoot, which was launched in 2009, is a non-pro t regis-tered charitable theatre company dedicated to introducing Okanagan youth and children to the magic of the theatre.

A new Red Riding Hood Foot loose and fancy free and sailing into the sunset as we retire.
at is not the re-ality very many retired Canadians with debt are moving into today.
Unless they are sail-ing away in a boat with a loan attached to it, they’re not sailing into the sunset in retirement.
Almost 40 per cent of Canadians carry debt on credit cards—this is very expensive debt, costing between an interest rate that can range from nine per cent to 28 per cent annually.
Some 30 per cent carry debt on a line of credit—this can range from three up to six per cent or higher. Sixteen per cent carry mortgage
debt. Almost 15 per cent carry consumer loans.
If you have debt of any kind, you should know how much your interest rate costs are, and pay the lowest interest rate pos-sible.
Do not make the credit card compan-ies any richer than they
are—they don’t need your money to increase their wealth.
ey already have enough other people paying high inter-est rates and not paying their credit balance each month when due.
Interest rates are low in Canada and many re-tired people have con-sumer debt.
A per cent of this debt makes it di cult for re-tirees to make other con-sumer choices because of their debt load.
Paying down debt af-ter retirement becomes more di cult due to liv-ing on a xed income with reduced cash ow.
Financial planning in pre-retirement should involve a review of cash
ow, budgeting and in-terest rate costs to deter-mine if you need to or should carry debt in re-tirement.
Baby boomers, those born between 1945 and 1964, are painfully short of their retirement sav-ings goals.
Debt among seniors is growing faster than other age groups. Indi-viduals are accumulat-ing more debt by using credit cards or consum-er loans so they can con-tinue to enjoy a pre-re-tirement lifestyle they may no longer be able to a ord.
Credit rating com-pany Equifax says sen-iors are increasing their debt levels to maintain the lifestyle they enjoyed
before retirement. Equi-fax says the average debt for consumers over 65 has climbed more than any other age group at 6.5 per cent.
Some retirement people head back to the work force to earn addi-tional income.
Downsizing your home is an option to help fund retirement.
Staying in a home you can no longer a ord in retirement can quickly drain your bank account.
If you are a two-car family, can you be a one car family saving vehicle insurance and re-pair costs on the second vehicle?
Do you have antiques or valuables that you no longer used and are gath-
ering dust that you can sell o to raise some ex-tra cash?
More than half of all retired Canadians are carrying debt and the debt is increasing.
Although retired Canadians hold less debt than those still working, they are less likely to take steps to accelerate their debt repayment.
Retired Canadians may carry debt long-er than anticipated in re-tirement. is results in
higher interest costs and reduced cash ow.
Is it a need or a want? If it is a want and you don’t need it, don’t buy it. Avoid unnecessary con-sumer debt.

We live in a world that is in constant,
often confusing, change. It’s not a comfortable
place—psychologically and emotionally—and it de nitely doesn’t help us to feel safe. In the world of work, the emotional elements are the same.
Let’s assume most employees expect and ac-cept that their work en-vironment will evolve.
Some people have a relatively easy time ad-justing to new things; others take a bit longer to adjust. ey can’t keep up with all the changes.
People have a toler-ance level for how much organizational change they can handle before they start to feel unsafe.
ere is an import-ant distinction between change and transition. Change is an action or event that happens ex-ternally. Transition is the acceptance and adoption of a new way of doing or being; it is an inter-nal process and it takes much longer.
Employees tend to see major organization-al change as something they have little to no in-
uence on. On the other hand, they know that making a successful tran-sition is very much with-in their control—they have a choice about get-
ting on board. Too often leaders fail
to understand the di er-ence, or they choose to ignore it. ey don’t real-ize that without employ-ee buy-in up front far more time and energy will be spent managing the pockets of human re-sistance that delay ex-pected outcomes.
People can only take so much change before they dig in their heels and push back. e best laid business plans will not build organizational resilience if the impact of continual change on the employees is not taken
into consideration.A basic rst step to
managing the human side of change is to ex-plain to employees in advance the business rationale for changes, then invite their input, listen to their concerns and answer questions.
Respectfully acknow-ledging people’s needs during transition o ers a much better chance of
getting their support. To ease that discom-
fort, they need leaders who talk to them hon-estly about what is go-ing on, who show sincere concern for how pend-ing changes will impact them.

Canada’s acclaimed Royal Winnipeg Ballet brings a timeless tale of love, loyalty and fate to Kelowna with choreog-rapher Rudi van Dan-tzig’s exquisite classic-al ballet Romeo + Juliet, Jan. 28 at the Kelowna Community eatre.
Co-presented by Bal-let Kelowna, the grand romantic work sets Shakespeare’s tale to a gorgeous Proko ev score and highlights the im-peccable classical tech-
nique of the Royal Win-nipeg Ballet corps de ballet.
“Rudi van Dantzig was an artist of the rarest caliber,” said RWB artis-tic director André Lewis. He was “a writer, dan-cer and choreographer whose aesthetic instincts were matched only by his strong opinions and pol-itical voice.
“ ough no longer with us, he left behind a great legacy of works in-cluding this stunning
Romeo + Juliet,” said Lewis.
“Created for the Dutch National Ballet,” where van Dantzig was artistic director, “his vi-sion of the Bard’s story is poetic, exciting and deeply romantic.”
Recognized along-side Giselle, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty as one of great classical bal-lets, Romeo + Juliet’s world-premiere was pre-sented by the Kirov Bal-let in 1938.
Set to a powerful and profound score by Ser-gei Proko ev, van Dan-tzig was among the rst non-Russian creators to develop new choreog-raphy for the work. His version was rst per-formed by the Dutch National Ballet in 1967 and later given its Can-adian premiere by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1981.
Its timeless narrative stays faithful to Shake-speare’s version, be-
ginning with a feud-ing clash between the Capulets and Mon-tagues, progressing to the young lovers meet-ing at a grand ball and the sealing of their fate in the unforgettable bal-cony scene. eir love becomes their undoing, as events and fate con-spire toward a tragic, yet breathtakingly roman-tic end.
Van Dantzig’s produc-tion will transport audi-ences to 16th century Verona with its opulent costumes and beautiful-ly crafted set pieces, rem-iniscent of urbane Ren-
aissance Italy. e visually spectacu-
lar production has be-come one of the crown jewels of the RWB’s rep-ertoire and an audience favourite in the com-pany’s hometown.
In particular, the opportunity to dance the role of Juliet has be-come a rite of passage for female members of the company, having been previously performed by such luminaries as Eve-lyn Hart, Tara Birtwhis-tle and Vanessa Lawson.
In Kelowna, the role will be danced by ris-ing star and rst cast
Amanda Green, who was made principal bal-lerina last year.
Her Romeo will be performed by Liang Xing, guest artist from the National Ballet of China.
About Canada’s Roy-al Winnipeg Ballet (ww.rwb.org)
Founded in 1939, by subsequent long-time Kelowna residents Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Bal-let holds the double dis-tinction of being Can-ada’s premier ballet com-pany and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America.
Versatility, technical excellence and a captiv-ating style are the trade-marks of the RWB, qual-ities that have garnered both critical and audi-ence acclaim.
RWB’s superlative standards keep the com-pany in demand around
the globe as it presents more than 150 per-formances every sea-son across Canada and in the United States, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Japan, Asia and Mexico.
Under the artistic dir-ection of André Lewis for more than 15 years, the company is said to have never looked more resplendent, more as-sured and more ravish-ing.

When I began my dog training career in 1997, I started out by training service dogs.
While most dog owners don’t require that level of training for their pet, I do believe that the average dog owner would like the same kind of self-restraint that any person with a disability
expects from his or her working dog.
Here is my list of the ve most critical skills I want any dog to learn.
1. Default Sit e very rst thing I
would teach any new ca-nine charge is a default sit. I’ll be honest here—I’m not crazy about dogs that jump all over me. Not many people are, even the most enthusi-
astic dog lover. Bear-ing that in mind, I would start right away to teach my dog that it is more bene cial to sit than to jump.
To do this, I rst want to set the dog up so that he or she can’t make many (or preferably any) paws-on-people mis-takes. I make sure my dog is either on a leash or on a tether whenever
new people are around. is takes the anxiety out of any human/dog interaction. It means that you no longer have to worry about wheth-er your dog will jump on someone because she/he can’t.
Next, I begin the task of teaching the sit. I want to make sure that I always have some very high-value rewards
on hand to help en-sure that my dog will want to work with me even if there are excit-ing things happening all around him or her. Since my goal is to teach the dog to automatically sit whenever new people appear, I refrain from telling or asking my dog to sit (he/she might not choose to respond any-way and I wouldn’t want
to inadvertently teach my dog to ignore my commands) but rath-er allow the dog to ex-plore his or her options. Each time the dog ch-oses to sit, I follow that sit with a tasty treat be-cause I understand that any behaviour that is re-warded should happen more often.
You need to be pa-tient during this pro-
cess. It can take a bit of time before the dog g-ures out that it is the sit-ting that is getting him the tasty treats. Once my dog becomes more re-liable about responding to each new person that comes along with a sit, I can begin to work on teaching my dog or pup to maintain his or her

Everytime I go to the dentist for my exam and hygiene, they’re always recommending uoride treatment. Can you tell me more about it?
This topic has over 60 years of evidence-based scienti c research backing it up. In fact, the World Health Organization has stated that uoride is one of the Top 10 Public Health Achievements of the 20th century. It is one of the best preventive measures you can take for the betterment of your oral health. The following is part 4 of our
series discussing uoride: Part 4 Q: Should I be using uoridated toothpaste with my child?A: For children from birth to 3 years of age, the use of uoridated toothpaste is determined by the level of risk of tooth decay. Parents should consult a health professional to determine whether their child up to 3 years of age is at risk of developing tooth decay. If such a risk exists, the child’s teeth should be brushed by an adult using a minimal amount (a portion the size of a grain of rice) of uoridated toothpaste. Use of uoridated toothpaste in a small amount has been determined to achieve a balance between the bene ts of uoride and the risk of developing uorosis. If the child is not considered to be at risk, the teeth should be brushed by an adult using a toothbrush moistened only with water. For children from 3 to 6 years of age, only a small amount (a portion the size of a green pea) of uoridated toothpaste should be used. Children in this age group should be assisted by an adult in brushing their teeth.

How exactly can diabetes cause me to have foot problems?
Diabetes that is uncontrolled will affect the organ systems in different ways. Peripheral neuropathy is a term commonly used to indicate an uncomfortable burning or tingling sensation in the feet. While this is correct, the term also encompasses other symptoms
related to nerve damage. The inability to feel a small pebble in your shoe to ominously not feeling a razor blade left in the bathroom is also caused by peripheral neuropathy. Healthy nerves that regulate perspiration from sweat glands in the feet and send motor signals telling our foot muscles and tendons when to contract and relax are also compromised in peripheral neuropathy. This can lead to dry, cracked skin, and rigid contractures of our toes leading to dangerous pressure points, respectively. Increased blood sugar circulating in the blood stream will deposit into tendons causing them to be more rigid and lead to further contractures and a less supple leg and foot. Arteries carrying blood to your feet can also become diseased limiting blood ow needed to help heal any wound or bring antibiotics needed to treat infection. If you have diabetes, it is a good idea to see your podiatrist to be assessed for the above and also for care of your nails and calluses.

When I turned 45 I noticed that my near vision started to deteriorate. Are there contact lenses available to help me deal with this?
Absolutely. There are in fact 2 styles of correction that can be used with contact lenses in order to help regain your near and distance clarity. The rst style
is called monovision and involves correction of one eye for near tasks and the other eye for distance. While it takes a short adaptation period, this often proves very effective for many people. The second style of correction are multifocal contact lenses which utilize concentric rings of varying power (search a picture on the internet if you’re keen - very neat stuff) in order to give you a range of clear vision at both near, intermediate and distance. For either style a full exam and contact lens tting will help determine what style of correction will suit you best.

My dog is a bit overweight, is this really a big deal?
In North America, obesity is the most common preventable disease in dogs. Approximately 25-30% of the general canine population is obese, with 40-45% of dogs aged 5-11 years old weighing in higher than normal. Excess fat negatively
impacts a dog’s health and longevity. Studies have shown that being even moderately overweight can reduce canine life expectancy by nearly two years compared to their leaner counterparts. It’s a sobering statistic. Previously, fat was considered to be relatively inert tissue, simply storing excess energy calories and adding to body mass. Scienti c evidence now reveals that fat tissue is biologically active. It secretes in ammatory hormones and creates oxidative stress on the body’s tissue, both of which contribute to many diseases. Thinking of obesity as a chronic, low-level in ammatory condition is a new paradigm. Obese dogs develop an increased risk for cancers of all types, diabetes mellitus, heart disease and hypertension, osteoarthritis and a faster degeneration of affected joints, and urinary bladder stones. On the other hand, obesity may be an indicator of disease, such as hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) or Cushing’s disease (overactive adrenal glands) and so veterinary consultation is recommended.

A New Year is upon us, how do I know if it’s time for us to move?
2014 is here and it is going to be a prosperous new year! Some reasons for considering a move are: thinking about starting a family, if your children have moved out and your home is too big, or if you have a change in marital status.
Most de nitely, if you are thinking about having your rst child or having more children, it’s time to start seriously considering buying a family friendly home. There is nothing worse than packing and moving while pregnant, or worse, with a toddler underfoot (this is what I did – LOL)!
If you nd yourself scanning the classi eds or picking up home magazines it’s time to speak with a professional and determine what your needs are and the reasons for your move. A Realtor has the experience, market knowledge and has most likely encountered situations similar to yours and has advice and ideas that will help you with your move. Remember, if home renovations aren’t enough, if you have outgrown your neighbourhood or if space is an issue, call an experienced realtor and take advantage of their knowledge and experience when you think it’s time to move!

sit for longer and longer periods of time.
2. Chill On a Mat
is is one of my fa-vourite skills to teach. e idea is that you will be able to send your dog over to a portable mat
(like a bath mat or towel) where he or she will lie down and remain until released. Recently I saw a little goldendoodle pup, at 16 weeks old, lying on his mat in the mid-dle of a soccer eld with ve soccer teams playing their matches all around him. What a good dog and what good par-
ents he has to spend so much time teaching him how to behave in pub-lic places.
3. Come We all want our dogs
to come when called but a lot of dogs I’m asked to work with just don’t. ey are completely unreliable. You need to teach your dog that it is
totally worth giving up whatever he or she is en-gaged with to come run-ning to you. It is import-ant to reinforce this be-haviour every time with a super tasty treat—if your dog is food motivated, or a game of tug—if your dog is play motivated.
If your dog isn’t reli-able, work on this skill
with your dog on a long leash and then inside an enclosed area before ever trusting him o leash.
If your dog does not come when he or she is called, whatever you do, don’t nag him. Repeating commands is the quick-est way to teach your dog to ignore you. Go and get her/him and go back to working with the dog on a line until he or she is more reliable.
4. Eye ContactEye contact is a great
way to teach your dog to keep his or her focus on you. I start this skill by rewarding my dog every time he or she choos-es to look at me—on walks, at the dog park, when kids are around, in the house, etc. I call these “check-ins.” Check-ins are a great way to start to teach your dog or pup that it pays to look.
5. Leave It Leave that alone!
Don’t mess with it. e purpose of this skill is to teach your dog to back away and not to touch anything that you’ve asked him or her not to. e “it” in question could
be a cat, a hamburger bun, a sock. Imagine how handy that would be.
In closing, remember to dedicate time to train-ing your dog or pup. It’s not fair to get angry with your dog for misbehav-ing if you haven’t taken the time to teach your dog what is expected of him or her.
No matter which skills you nd import-ant for your dog to learn, understand that be-haviours need to be re-warded often and well and you will need to lim-it your dogs opportun-ity to make the wrong choices by using bet-ter management—head halters or no pull har-nesses for a dog who pulls, leashes and teth-ers for jumpers and long lines for a dog who won’t come when he or she is called.
If you feel like you could use some addition-al help, nd a profession-al trainer in your area. Good luck!

news news
A new twist on an old type of scam has ap-peared in the Central Okanagan as scammers continue to evolve with technology and test new ways of stealing your money.
Email scams have been around just about as long as the electronic mailing service. Over the past 20 years or so the scams have continued to evolve along with email.
Nowadays, people can quickly send money to each other through their online banking ser-vice using what is known as an Interac e-Trans-fer. Essentially, a message is sent from the sender’s online banking account to the recipient by email or text message, notify-ing them of the transfer and providing instruc-
tions on how to deposit the cash.
e money never ac-tually travels by email or text and no personal or nancial information is exchanged.
Scammers are now attempting to exploit this service by send-ing fraudulent Interac e-Transfer emails, other-wise known as phishing emails.
Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire in-formation such as user-names, passwords and personal or nancial in-formation by masquer-ading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.
As with all email scams, the fraudulent email looks similar to the real thing but there are a few things to watch for:
• As real e-Transfers are system-generated, spelling errors are a dead giveaway that the mes-sage is not legitimate
• e e-Transfer is an-onymous. Real e-Trans-fers typically have the name of the sender in the subject line as well as the body of the mes-sage and may contain a personal message from them.
• e link is more than just Interac’s secure e-Transfer site. Always check the link and/or the browser bar before en-tering passwords or other personal and nancial information.
• e e-Transfer is un-expected. An e-Trans-fer requires a security question to prevent un-intended recipients from depositing the money
and this should be set up between the sender and recipient prior to the transfer occurring.
If you receive an unexpected Interac e-Transfer or there is something not quite right about the message, it is probably a scam and clicking the link could compromise your per-sonal or nancial infor-mation.
For more information on phishing, frauds and scams and how to report them, please go to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website at www.antifraudcentre-centre-antifraude.ca
Distributed by the RCMP, Kelowna Detachment.
RCMP warning: e-Transfer scams could be coming to an email inbox near you

news
While about 80 per cent of Canadians vis-it a doctor at least once a year for a health check-up, that gure is far less for those who review the nancial health by their mortgage.
Plenty can change during a standard ve-year mortgage payment period between interest
rate adjustments—a ca-reer change, kids, retire-ment, newfound money.
Managing your -nancial lifestyle is just as important as managing your diet and exercise.
People often just wait for a renewal letter be-fore looking at their mortgage, and even then they’ll send the contract
back thinking it is fu-tile to consider changing terms or providers.
Consumers tend to become complacent about their mortgage payments when they could have an opportun-ity to save money.
Interest rate changes tend to be the most vis-ible variable.
You’re making a com-mitment to be mort-gage-free in 25 years so you should have a long-er term view of what in-terest rates will look like over that period
As well, an existing mortgage can pay for home renovations, or to consolidate debt.
If you’re buying a
new home, you may be able to use your cur-rent mortgage. A mort-gage can also help you become more tax e -cient if you’re thinking of investing in a business, buying a rental property or putting some money into mutual funds or the stock market. at’s be-cause the interest paid
on money borrowed on a principal property can be written o against rev-enue from those invest-ments.
Situations in your life change, and when they do it’s important to as-sess how that can or will impact your mortgage.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS
Plan to Recycle your Christmas tree It’s always a bit sad when the tree comes down, but you can feel good knowing it will have another life after the holidays. Drop it off before January 31 in the parking lot
at Jack Seaton Park (1950 Camp Rd.) and your tree will be chipped and composted. Gates are open 6am-11pm.
Snow accumulations are a challenge. Roadside parking can significantly
hamper snow-clearing efforts, particularly on the narrower side roads. Residents & businesses are asked to do
their best to leave as much room for the plows as possible on the side roads.
