Types of Challenges

Development• Permissions• Avenues for

Revenue• Grid related• Financing• Identification of

Partners

Management• Ownership• Access for O&M• Regular

payment recovery

• Replacement costs

• Distributed installations

Technology• Small capacity

inverters• Certifications

and standards for Indian conditions

• Service availability

Development challenges

Awareness of all stakeholders Utility worry about losing well-paying

customers Uncertain policies and changing scenario Process and documentation for project

development in various models Financial closure – project financing Identification of roof owners Identification of suppliers, EPC, O&M

5

Management challenges – 25 years??

Grid availability and quality – LV level Financial strength of utilities or private

clients Payment security mechanism Changes to roofs, locations – own and

neighbors Service manpower and spares Re-validation of different agreements Changes in consumer loads in net

metering Emergency backup supply for buildings

6

Technology challenges

Grid tied inverters – certifications and standards

Roof fixing techniques and availability Protection features Regular calibration of various equipment Timely replacement of components Recycling methods and setups for

material

7

Few Specifics – Net Metering Regulations are yet in draft stage Each SERC has to have own regulation for

the state – requires time Currently net metering attractive only for

high tariff consumers – needs additional incentives

State-wise different connectivity specifications

Low voltage grid strengthening necessary at many places

8

Few Specifics – Gross metering Utilities unwilling / unable to provide FIT

due to possibility of further reducing costs of solar energy

Private customers (for third party sale) unwilling to have long term PPA

Charges of transmission, wheeling, distribution and CSS are high, making solar energy more expensive

More actions …

Capacity Development•Developers and Investors•Bankers•Contractors

Resource Mapping•Weather Stations•Accurate data of commissioned projects

Holistic Sectoral Development•Developers / Investors / Manufacturers•Consumers / National benefits•Energy conservation / efficiency / renewables
