IT’S THE USER, DUMMY…

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

HOW TO GET YOUR

TECHIES TO LOVE UX 05/09/2017 MARK MCNALLY

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

I’M NOT AN UX DESIGNER!

It won’t, it needs to be the user

HEALTHWARNING:

WHAT WE DO:

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

DEVELOPERS VIEW OF THE USER:

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

WHY ARE THEY UNFORGIVING OF

‘STUPID’ USERS?

They are now too invested.

WHAT IS UX?

“User experience design (UX, UXD, UED or XD) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction with a product by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction with the product.

User experience design encompasses traditional human–computer interaction (HCI) design, and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users.”

Steve Jobs from Apple said:

“Users do not know what they

want if you ask them. There’s a

great quote by Henry Ford, right?”

GREAT COMPANIES JUST KNOW

WHAT THE USER WANTS - Don't they?

"If I’d have asked my

customers what they

wanted, they would have

told me ‘A faster horse.”

- Henry Ford -

RESEARCH?

Apple does do user research, not market

research. Usability and UX are critical

components of not only UI and visual

design tasks at Apple but also UX

culture. UX culture is the critical

background piece that sustains a sharp

focus on users and design at Apple.

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

"It's actually the engineering culture, and the way the organization is structured to appreciate and support design.

Everybody there is thinking about UX and design, not just the designers.

And that's what makes everything about the product so much better . . . much more than any individual designer or design team."

- Mark Kawano - (interview in Fast Company)

ENGINEERING CULTURE

USERCENTERED

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

If you want great products, the whole organisation needs to understand how to build user centred products and services!

Don’t forget Developers/Backend coders are users too!

EVERYBODY IS A USER and A DESIGNER!

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

This guy does not have the monopoly on design and good ideas!

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

Developers can design and have ideas, but they are not the user.

Don’t think getting developers to test designs will work.

It won’t, it needs to be the user!

USERCENTERED

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

SO,

WHAT IS

THE MESSAGE?

Developers,

the people building

the product, should

be involved in

the design process!

Developers are expensive

and they are only productive

when they are writing code.

They are not interested

in this fluffy design stuff.

OOOPS

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

But what is the real cost of rework and getting it wrong?

SWING!

All the user research in the world

will not guarantee an amazing product.

5 DAY DESIGN SPRINT

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

CAN YOU FEEL IT?Don’t. It needs to be the user!

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO EXPLORE!

THE CHALLENGE: UEA University - Increase the

conversion rate of potential

students coming to their site.

For this example the student is

not sure what they want to study.

So the challenge is to interest the

student enough to get them to sign

up to a course or an open day.

EXERCISE - Break into teams of 5+

- Step one Sketch - each person works on their own

- Vote on ideas

- Build a paper prototype (storyboard)

- Test prototype

- We will build a prototype of their final idea and post it on the web for you to test with someone else.

SKETCH!!! Oh no, I can’t draw!

STORYBOARD

BENEFITS OF GETTING

THE TEAM ENGAGED

- Reduction in rework

- Less meetings trying to explain the detail of incomplete

user stories

- A motivated development team

- A better product that has a much better chance of

succeeding ENGAGE!
