The: mace is 111 '1Jlcient symbol of authority. The Elon U niversity mace. given ill memory of Elan professor Alonzo L. Hook by the estate ofE.M . M~rt i n , i~ carried in academic procession by 3 ~enior member of rh... fac ulty. Gerald Dillasilaw, professor ofEduration , bears the Elon mace todny.

The Elan UniversIty mace , approximately 40 mches in length. was handcrafted in Portugal of sterling silver and gilding and incorporates mauy symbols. The shaft of the mace is orn:un~nttld wtth bands of oak leaves and has four sections tharrepresent four year~ of study. An acorn, symbolizing the seed oflearning. is carved at rhe top of th~ shaft. The head of Ule' mace is a six-sided replica ofElon'~ colonnade~ , complete wit:b open arche, and brickwork. which signify strcugth and stability. The mace is crown~d with the officia l seal of the umversity.

Elon's ,ix gonfalons represent the schools that comprise Elon Universit y: Elon College, the College of Art, 3ml Sciences; Martha and Spenc.; r Love School ofBustness: School of Communications; School of Educatioll; School of Health Sciences ; :md School ofLJw.

The academic regalia worn by modern college :lnd universiry faculty and students originated ill medieval European universirie' and has undcrgonc little madification £inee the 16th c~ntury. As in th~ .MJ.ddle Ages, modern academic regali a signifies the wearer's academic accomplishmt'nt and con~ists of a gown or robe, head covering, and hood.. T11t' robe denotes the wearer's level of education. with the baccalaureate gown being ofsimple design with full ~ I eeves . The master's gown i.s similar to the baccalaurt:ate gown e..'i:cept that it has a closed or glo\'e sleeve that is open at the wnst. The doctoral gOWJl has velvet p~nels down the front md velvet chevrons on large bell-shaped sleeves. While most gowns lre black. some imtitlltions. like EloJl, choose robes in the school colors.

Jt is the bood that adds meaning to academic regalia. Changed little si.nce the Middle Ages, the hood fulls from the houlder~ down the back of the gown in a dlsplav of coloL A hood is usually black and edged in colored velvet denoting

the disciplines of the wearer's degree. The college or university awarding the degree is indIcated by tbe colors of the ilk lining.
