Healthy body

Diet is the usual food and drink that each person consumes and is a very important part of health.

A balanced diet means eating the right types of food in the right amounts so that the body gets the nutrients it needs.

Carbohydrates proteinsFats Fibervitamins & minerals Water

EnergyO To maintain minimum essential life

functions is known as basal metabolic rate, BMR.

O Humans require energy to functionO Obtain energy from food they

consumeO Measured in Calories.O The amount of calories needed

depends on body weight, age, activity levels, and if male or female

MetabolismO Metabolism= chemical reactions

involved in storing food molecules and converting food molecules into energy.

O Digestion + oxygen energy

WeightO If you consume to many calories the

excess is stored and you gain weightO You want the energy in= energy out,

so you don’t gain weight.

How to burn foodO Oxygen must be supplied to cells, and

carbon dioxide released. O Heart/lungs deliver oxygen to all the organs,

tissues and cells. O Energy must be transferred for the organs,

and cells to work. O Lungs take in oxygen for the combustion of

food

Regular ExerciseO Important to maintain a healthy

heart, lungs, muscle tone, bone strength.

O Increase heart rate provides more oxygen for the body to use.

Overall Basal Metabolic Rate

O 60 % of all energy used by the bodyO 30% account of daily physical

activities (walking and moving)O 10% of the energy used by the body

to digest and process food.

O Calculate BMR

So what should my diet look like?

Draw a picture of a plate include how much you think should be

fruits, vegetables, protein (meat), and grains.

Releases energy for the body.

Protects organs in your body and is an

energy store.

To regulate digestion and elimination of faecal

matter.

OToo much fat / clogs arteries; obesity; heart disease

OToo much salt / high blood pressure (hypertension)

OToo much sugar / type II diabetes (insulin/regulate blood sugar)

Poor Nutrition

You are much more likely to kill yourself with your

lifestyle choices than to have someone else kill you!

The typical American diet is too high in saturated fat, sodium, and sugar and too low in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, calcium, and fiber.
