WHY CSI

Experiences and observations during Exie's

2 yr. 4 mo. stay on the island of Awaji gave

birth to th e idea of a C h ri st ia n S u mm e r I ns t

i tute Bible Classes such as she had he ld in

Kobe m et with l i t t le success . S tu d en ts h ad to

travel some distance to reach her home .There

was lack of adequate transportation during thehours when students would be f ree from re

gular school activities. Cultural backgroimd

an d poverty were added reasons fo r low class

membership. Students in the cities are urged

in many ways to seek higher educat ion and

wider horizons. Many of the students on Awaji

grow up expect ing to receive only Jr -Hi , at

most Hi-School, education— t he n t o work. To

them there was no reason to add a c lass in

Bible to what they were already studying. Be

cause of th e high drop-out rate after Jr-Hi

and because it seemed diff icul t fo r the Hi-

School graduates to compete with those from

the city schools in college entrance exams,

Exie remarked to a lady helping her that it

wou ld be good fo r Awaji t o have a Jr-College,

to give vision and hope to i ts you i^ people.

 Won't you start one? th e lady asked. Exie

reasoned that she was a missionary, not an

educator, and could not. Requests coming from

schools to help with English and typing brought

forth the idea of an Institute to give assistancein English an d typing, p lu s t ea ch t he Bible, In

this way students might be helped with their

regular studies while also learning,  The be

ginning of knowledge is th e fear of Jehovah,

At f i rs t summer cou rse s will be of fe red in

English, typing and Bible. Later, music, and

o the r cou r s e s w ill b e added .

When Exie f i r s t purchased land on th e is

land of Awaji, th e road i n f ron t of the Shinto,

shrine pictured below was t he main on e

t hr ou gh t he v il la ge of Kariya and was a dirt

one. Th e road by th e side of th e shr ine wa s

th e star t ing poi nt o f t he smal l on e t hat l ed

b a c k t o t h e l o w m o u n t a i n s i t e t h a t E xi e h ad

c h o s e n .

The star t ing point f or u si ng t he l an d

seemed to be to overcome th e twin problems

of lack of water an d electr ici ty. What to do ?

A dug well Would be useless. A drilled well

m ig ht f ai l t o produce. Piping from th e coast

l ine , poss ib l e, bu t   Wha t o f funds?

Would churches in U.S.A. support th e cos t?

Years passed and changes came. A new,

wide, paved road now runs behind th e shr ine .

Six to eight drilled wells pump water into a

central station to b r i i ^  c i ty wate r to th ea r e a . By God s providence on e well was

placed on th e land Exie ha d purchased,

bringing both water and electricity to th e

l a n d s i t e .
