FROM THE PRESIDENT
A Colorful Fall Greeting!
The grand opening for the Society’s Alabama Members Showcase was held
at the Georgine Clark Alabama Artists Gallery on September 11, 2016. This
Showcase is an excellent presentation of Alabama artists’ paintings and WSA
is proud to offer this competition to its Alabama state members. The Lian
Quan Zhen workshop was a great success, with attendees from Alabama
and neighboring states. Thank you to Jaceena Shepard, Entry Chair, and to
Lyn Gill for a great job as Showcase and Workshop Director.
A huge thank you to the volunteers who assisted Lyn in receiving and unpacking paintings, helping
with the workshop, and providing the delicious food for the Opening Reception. We had a great
time! Please visit Montgomery and see this Exhibition, on display through October 28. For more
about the event, look for Lyn’s review in this Newsletter.
The 76th National Exhibition will be hosted by the beautiful Heritage Hall Museum in Talladega from
April 8 through May 19, 2017. Selection Juror is Keiko Tanabe. Awards Juror and Workshop Instruc-
tor is Ming Franz. Mark your calendar for Ms. Franz’ workshop on 6,7,8 April at the Museum. Check
your email for the prospectus and workshop brochure coming soon.
We, the Board of Directors, value you as members and appreciate your support. When you enter WSA
competitions and attend the workshops, you are participating in WSA goals to promote watercolor as a
major painting medium and to provide the viewing public with some of the best watercolor paintings
the nation has to offer.
These goals are all made possible by volunteers. We will be announcing specific volunteer positions in
which WSA needs your help. Thank you to new volunteer, Marsha Nelson, for serving as Proofreader
to help us in producing high quality products. Please keep in mind your opportunity to volunteer and
promote this wonderful Society, you and your artwork.

The opening reception for the Alabama Members’ Showcase was held on Sunday, September 11, 2016
from 1:30-3:30pm at the Alabama State Council of the Arts Georgine Clark Alabama Artists Gallery
in the RSA Tower in Montgomery, AL. Don Andrews had served as the selection juror and Lian Quan
Zhen served as the Awards Juror. The Showcase included 54 paintings from members throughout Al-
abama, and the Gallery welcomed nearly 100 guests for the reception and awards presentation.
After presenting the awards, Dr. Zhen visited with artists and provided feedback to artists who re-
quested it.
The show will continue until October 28, with pickup by the artists on Saturday, October 29.
For three days prior to the Alabama Members’ Showcase, Lian Quan Zhen conducted a workshop
highlighting his three-color pour and splash technique with negative painting. Fifteen painters, in-
cluding three new members from throughout Alabama, along with two from Georgia and one from
Mississippi, were in attendance. The group learned how to save whites with masking and (gasp)
packing tape and how to work with the random splashes and drips created by pre-spraying the paper
lightly with water, then adding diluted pigments. The group seemed overwhelmed and a bit out of
their comfort zone initially, but were soon enjoying their drips and dribbles. Dr. Zhen then showed
how to add details by using negative painting. The first day’s demo focused on painting elephants,
and the second day saw the beginning of a waterfall demo. Both were completed and on display dur-
ing the AMS Reception. At the end of each demo, Dr. Zhen would illustrate using the artists’ work for
the day, how small changes could strengthen their design. Dr. Zhen also offered to sign books with an
original painting while artists were working during the workshop. (Lyn Gill)
