The opening reception for the Alabama Members’ Showcase was held on Sunday, September 11, 2016

from 1:30-3:30pm at the Alabama State Council of the Arts Georgine Clark Alabama Artists Gallery

in the RSA Tower in Montgomery, AL. Don Andrews had served as the selection juror and Lian Quan

Zhen served as the Awards Juror. The Showcase included 54 paintings from members throughout Al-

abama, and the Gallery welcomed nearly 100 guests for the reception and awards presentation.

After presenting the awards, Dr. Zhen visited with artists and provided feedback to artists who re-

quested it.

The show will continue until October 28, with pickup by the artists on Saturday, October 29.

For three days prior to the Alabama Members’ Showcase, Lian Quan Zhen conducted a workshop

highlighting his three-color pour and splash technique with negative painting. Fifteen painters, in-

cluding three new members from throughout Alabama, along with two from Georgia and one from

Mississippi, were in attendance. The group learned how to save whites with masking and (gasp)

packing tape and how to work with the random splashes and drips created by pre-spraying the paper

lightly with water, then adding diluted pigments. The group seemed overwhelmed and a bit out of

their comfort zone initially, but were soon enjoying their drips and dribbles. Dr. Zhen then showed

how to add details by using negative painting. The first day’s demo focused on painting elephants,

and the second day saw the beginning of a waterfall demo. Both were completed and on display dur-

ing the AMS Reception. At the end of each demo, Dr. Zhen would illustrate using the artists’ work for

the day, how small changes could strengthen their design. Dr. Zhen also offered to sign books with an

original painting while artists were working during the workshop. (Lyn Gill)
