document summarizing qualifications and experiences for education, employment, and other skills

AKA—a snapshot of you!!

Key Points of a Resume

1. Must be error free and well organized, so that employers can easily spot what they’re looking for. (75% of employers will remove an applicant for a typo and/or grammatical error on a resume)

2. Most readable font is 12-point for the body; never use smaller than 10; use larger font for your name

3. Use variety of Effects to separate, but be consistent.

4. List education and work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first)

5. DO NOT use complete sentences; should be an outline not a story.

6. 1-2 pages

7. Use High Quality paper (resume paper)

RESUME FORMATRecommended Sections: HEADING—name, address, contact information

(including email). Educational Background—school name,

city/state, degree, major/minor, etc.

GPA RULE—if 3.0 or higher then list it Special Skills, Certifications, or Qualifications—

computer skills, software apps, related courses or training.

Employment History—including dates (month/year), job title, and duties

Activities, honor/awards, or professional memberships

Separate reference page to give interviewer during interview.

Resume Practice

For the practice resume, we are going to create the resume from scratch.

Put your name and contact information at the top and copy the rest of the information for the content.

On a word document List 200 things you can do….. Can be anything that you are capable of doing From that list, think of information that you would

put under each heading of your resume. Also list 3 people you would use as references

COVER LETTERS

Sometimes called a Letter of Application

Accompanies a resume when seeking a job interview

Key Points

Cover letters are printed on the same quality paper as the resume.

Must be proofread carefully to be 100% error-free

Include your return address in a traditional style or use a personal letter head

Keep it brief

Tell why you are writing; refer to the specific position and tell how you heard of the opening

Cover Letter Assignment

Create a database for 5 companies that you would want to send your resume to.Find names and contact information online.

Create a cover letter and mail-merge it with your database.

Interview Dress

Research on-line what you should wear for an interview

Go Shopping and choose your interview outfit (suit, shoes, socks, etc.)

In excel, create your shopping list with costs and a total for the outfit.

Include pictures on the spreadsheet
