Plan your conversation

How are you going to explain the issue clearly?

What are they likely to say?

What are you likely to say to this?

What’s the bottom line?

How are you going to move forward?

think logistics

choose a time and a place that optimises your discussion

take emotion out of it

Get straight to the point

tell them exactly what needs to

change or happen differently

tell them why things need to

change or be done differently

give them space to react and respond to what you have said

HANG BACK

Respond to the points

raised

don’t get derailed

stay on message

be respectful and tactful

keep it constructive

that doesn’t mean being dishonest

Agree what the next steps are

Commit to the way forward
