Fun and frivolity at Seniors Week luncheon
Seniors Week 2014 was celebrated in Balranald Shire
on Tuesday 18 March at the Theatre Royal with a
“That’s Hollywood” theme.
Over 180 guests enjoyed a luncheon followed by
entertainment and lots of laughs.
South West Arts presented two of their Young @ Heart
short films, whilst the visiting Solos’ troupe provided
rock ‘n’ roll demonstrations, ukulele performances and
belly dancing.
Guests enjoyed a scrumptious meal prepared and
served by the Balranald Central School P & C
Association and the school’s hospitality students.
Council would like to take this opportunity to thank the
Balranald Central School P & C and the hospitality
students for their assistance in contributing to the
success of the Senior Week celebration.
Adam Harvey wows Balranald On Friday 21 March over 200 revellers attended the Adam Harvey Acoustic Concert hosted by the Balranald Shire Cultural Committee at Balranald’s Theatre Royal. With the Balranald Lions Club cooking up their every popular steak and sausage sandwiches, the Balranald Football Club operating the bar and the Balranald Tennis Club serving soft drinks and snacks… the night was off to a great start. Adam, supported by his mates Vaughan and Andy put on a spectacular show singing a selection of his own songs, and taking requests from the crowd. A highlight of the evening was when Adam invited some of the younger crowd up on stage to sing with him. The Committee has received positive feedback from the night and look forward to bringing more concerts/entertainment to the Shire in the future.

Next Ordinary Meeting of Council
- Tuesday 15 April 2014 -
I would like to thank the Balranald Central School P&C team and the hospitality students who provided the catering and table service for the Seniors Week Luncheon held on Tuesday March 18 at the Theatre Royal. A great day was had by all! Over 20 people gathered at the Balranald Aerodrome on Sunday March 16, to pay tribute to the Angel Flight, and Tom Lowry’s 100th flight with the service. At the March meeting Council resolved to donate $1,000 to the Angel Flight service. The Solo’s Network Rally was held in Balranald from March 17 to 24 and provided a boost to our local economy with $62,800 being spent in the community over the eight days. I would like to thank all the community groups who provided catering etc during the rally. Council have re-advertised the General Manager’s position and interviews will be held on Wednesday April 9, 2014. The Robinvale/Euston CMCA 28th Anniversary Rally is currently underway with over 900 motorhomes taking position along the Murray River in Robinvale. Congratulations must go to the CMCA, Rally Manager Ray Jones and his committee for securing and coordinating another great event.

Solos’ motorhome
rally success
Shire on show
Balranald’s Greenham Park was inundated with motorhomes on 17 March heralding the start of the CMCA Solos’ Network eight day rally. Over 230 Solos’ enjoyed an action packed program of activities and entertainment during the rally and also spent time mingling within the community and getting to know the locals. Yanga National Park Rangers hosted seventy Solos’ on a tour of Yanga Homestead and the Woolshed on Wednesday 19 March, and another 24 on Friday 21 March for a sketching work-shop coordinated by The Gallery and local artist Jan Lawler. The event provided an opportunity for local community groups to raise funds through catering etc with St Josephs P & F hosting the welcome dinner
on St Pat’s Day serving Irish Stew and Mash, whilst the Balranald Central School P&C cooked up a barbeque lunch during the Solos’ sports day at the pool, and the Men’s Shed catered for a number of events throughout the rally.
On March 24, the Solos’ Rally finished and many of the rigs started to roll out of town in different directions, but the economic benefit to the local community remains.
During the eight day rally a shopper docket campaign was conducted by the Solos’. Council has been advised that the final spend in Balranald by the Solos’ is approximately $62,800. A group of 30 - 40 Solos’ members has approached Council to investigate a return visit to the Shire when they are heading across to Western Australia in the near future.

Tourism Officer Kit Formosa at the show
Balranald Shire was showcased to the Melbourne and Victorian tourism markets at the recent Melbourne Caravan and Camping Show held at Caulfield Racecourse from March 6 to 11. The six day show provided an opportunity for Tourism Officer Kit Formosa to sell our region as a tourism destination. Feedback from the show has been positive with Kit reporting strong interest in Mungo, Yanga and our rivers.
