CHUCK BELLAMY AND BIOQUIP

LOUISE FALL, CHRIS FALL, AND KEN FALL2321 Gladwick Street

Rancho Dominguez, CA 90220, U.S.A.

BioQuip and the Fall family appreciate the oppor-tunity to include a tribute in the tribute issue dedicatedto the memory of Chuck Bellamy. For more than40 years, starting when he was a student at CaliforniaState University, Long Beach, Chuck consistentlyprovided his encouragement, support and friendship. His accomplishments were truly remarkable, espe-cially in view of poor health in his later years.Chuck’s consuming interest was buprestid beetles.

His many years of dedicated research and travelresulted in publication of the five-volume workA World Catalog and Bibliography of the JewelBeetles in 2008. The Catalogue presents taxonomichistory of more than 14,700 valid species and abibliography with more than 8,000 citations. Few,if any, coleopterists could undertake and com-plete such a monumental task in a single lifetime. His deep spiritual faith helped provide him withstrength to finish this work.Chuck was an important leader and contributor

to The Coleopterists Society, both as President andin his many hours spent working for the successof the organization. Coleopterists will rememberhis devotion to and support of the Society for manyyears to come.

Some family remembrances –In 2001, Chuck described a new genus and

species collected in Perinet, part of a preserve ineastern Madagascar. He named it Falliellus richardi,in honor of Richard Fall, Chairman of the Board ofBioQuip Products, who passed away in 2000. Chuckpublished a revision covering this small (6.8 mm),beautiful buprestid (Bellamy 2001).In addition to writing many scholarly papers,

Chuck was prolific in his correspondence. Weenjoyed reading his handwritten letters mailedfrom Africa in the early years of our friendship, then frequent emails in later years. When he wasable to attend the annual meetings of the Ento-mological Society of America, we found time to

have stimulating conversations that covered a widerange of topics, seldom about buprestids. We weresurprised and honored when Chuck flew fromSacramento to celebrate BioQuip’s first HolidayOpen House in our new facility, returning home inthe late afternoon. At the California Dept. of Food and Agriculture,

Chuck continued to work as his health wouldallow, but always came to the office on Fridaymornings for the donuts and coffee roundtableto spend time with his colleagues. On severaltrips to northern California, we arranged to be inSacramento on a Friday morning so that we couldvisit with Chuck. It was a privilege to know this special man, and

we will miss him.

The Coleopterists Society gratefully acknowledges the generouscontribution of BioQuip Products to fund color images for this ChuckBellamy tribute issue of The Coleopterists Bulletin. Like many of BioQuip’scustomers over the years, Chuck enjoyed a long and close relationshipwith the Fall family. This friendship is evidenced, in part, with Chuck’sdescription of the Madagascan buprestid Falliellus richardi in recognitionof Richard Fall’s substantial and varied contributions to entomology.
