TSS

The TSS in an argumentative essay states clearly your position.

Possible TSS: 3 methods

•Stating only the topic and your position

•Containing the opposing point of view in the subordinate structure and your point of view in the main clause.

•Connecting the opposing point of view with your view with transition signals of contrast.

11

TSS 1: Stating only the topic and your position

Curfew laws are unfair and should be abolished.

In my opinion, stem cell research should receive the full support of our government.

12

TSS 2:

• Containing the opposing point of view in the subordinatestructure and your point of view in the main clause.

• Examples:

–Despite the claims that curfew laws are necessary to control juvenile gangs, curfew laws are clearly unconstitutional.

–Although there are certainly reasons to be cautious with stem cell research or any new technology, I believe that its potential benefits far outweigh its dangers.

13

TSS 3:

• Connecting the opposing point of view with your view with transition signals of contrast.

• Examples:

–Smokers say that they have a right to smoke in spite of the fact that smoking will kill them.

–Whereas it may be true that the US Constitution gives citizens the right to own weapons, the men who wrote the Constitution lived in a different time.
