• The image of wide scope

• This aims at an individual’s participation in an institution (such as a career)

• We are members of an egency, which is an agency undergoing electricity.

• People can use the Internet as an invention bank for digital networking to start off your career.

- Themata is the basis for fundamental, scientific explanation.

- Einstein was fascinated that his compass needle always returned to the same direction without any human contact!

• The website is a simulation of the wide image

• Our project is just as much an invention as it is a discovery

• A childhood memory (like Einstein’s) can express an abstract theme

• The goal is inventio – the stage of gathering materials with which to work

• Think of this site as a display of details related to a discovery, invention, and a figure responsible for it.

• We will make a series of individual websites devoted to different areas or institutional experiences to find a wide image.

• Patterns will hopefully emerge and we dive deeper into the project.

• Make a website documenting an important discovery, or a (founding) invention, in your career domain.

• Career domain is your university major, or a field of disciplinary knowledge in which you have some interest.

• The discovery or invention may be historical

- Politics, for example, has its history in the Bill of Rights

• The documentation must be detailed and have particulars that stimulate the senses and imagination.

• If you are just beginning in a major (business, pre-med, journalism), you may not be able to specifically identify with a career field.

• However, we all have a fantasy “dream job”

• Before college, students have already been exposed to multiple practices

• Popcycleis a bunch of discourses we have been socially and psychologically constructed by. It is the source of wide image…

• For example: Subjects taken in school or commitmentsof one’s parents

• The most influential institutions of popcyclesinclude: Career, Family, Community History, and Entertainment.

• Within each category there are specific images of wide scope which have shaped your future goals in some way

• For example: Subjects taken in school or commitments of one’s parents

1) Look into your family, community, and entertainment to locate the foundation of your interests

For example: the subject from school, commitment of parent’s, or advertising in entertainment have defined you in some way

• Like Einstein’s father’s metal factory or fascination with a compass, one an be influenced at an early age in preparation for their future career… think back

EviromentalistGardening with Mom

2) Look at the history behind your field of study, “Institutions have default themata.”

• Think of an invention in your field that you forgot had to be invented for your occupation to become functional.

For example: Aristotle and the alphabet

Philosophy(filled with theories, words, and ideas)

3) One may even look to role model’s or characters, aka “star icons” (movies, literature, etc) as an “image of wide scope”

For example: Silvia Plath associated a certain behavior to a movie character.

- What do you think Professor Jelley’s purpose was in including interview questions about our favorite movie, book, and TV show?

• Because Rory from Gilmore Girls was a journalist, as a die hard fan, you could have sparked a similar interest.

-Basho’s quote supports why we study Einstein and emulate role models…“ One should not follow in the footsteps of the masters, but seek what they sought.” - Basho

4) Your task is to determine what something essentially is, as distinct from what it merely happens to be – find the object’s symbolic purpose

For example: the significance of the compass in Einstein’s life

• Pin pointing an image in your past allows you to see a fixed symbol, a physical representation of a part of you so the process of selection in your career can begin…

• That is one function of “an image”

• Just like Einstein and his compass

The Invention of “Definition”

• The definition of a word establishes its real meaning.

– The process of producing the true essence of the topic.

– Ulmer also refers to the essence of each word as a “predicable”

“Definition”

• The reason for definitions is to define a substance by narrowing the subject down to its essential characteristics.

– Especially the attribute that captures the essence of the substance.

– We can use definitions to compare various subjects and thus defining the substance by comparing

“Definition”

• Definitions provide the bases for how our meanings of various words are constantly changing throughout society.

– Over the years, definitions have adapted as our culture has developed

• New generations along with advances in all aspects of our lives have contributed to this change

• Thus making it the only aspect of writing that is changing

“Definition”

• Individual people develop these new definitions based on various factors in their lives:

– Environment

– Experiences

– Beliefs

“Definition”

• Joseph Beuys’ example uses the metaphor of comparing text or “textile” to felt.

– Textile is viewed as being weaved together, or stringing the words together.

– However, felt is forced or smashed together, a contrasting style to textile

“Definition”

• When people look at defining words differently such as the production of these objects, new realizations can be made.

– By mixing words together in original and unique ways, people can discover new connections and meanings.

Paragraphs

• Basic building blocks of essays

– Each paragraph has a specific purpose, but when combined into a series a larger idea is developed

– Generally, paragraphs make an effort to explain the exact meaning

– Sometimes the emotional meanings of words can contribute to impressions not normally planned on by the writer

Paragraphs

• When attempting to provide an explanation there are 2 simple steps:

– Place the subject in a class

– Differentiate it from other items in the same class.

• Using examples as well as comparing and contrasting these subjects are common ways to distinguish them apart

Antidefinition

• Since the times of the great Greek philosophers, the antidefinition has been argued

– This school of thought believes in performance and actually doing to express ones view on a subject

• The art community continues to invent ways of developing their definitions through various outlets such as T.V. and paintings

Antidefinition

• This clashes with the traditional view of using writings and text when explaining subjects

• The “formless” dictionary was created to express these meanings– For example, a typical definition of a T.V. might be

an electrical device used to communicate through images.

– The “formless” meaning might be a way to educate, entertain or inform

Antidefinition

• Georges Bataille provided a factory chimney as an example

– Some will view the chimney as a sign of production and a successful economy while providing jobs and products

– However, others will see the smoke climbing to the sky and polluting our air. Also the chimney creates a grimy environment leaving very little to appeal to the eye
