ButIrealized,becauseofthepeoplethatIknew,therewasahugedisenchantmentwithcharity.Therewasahugecynicism.Therewasahugeskepticismwhenitcameto[00:26:30]charity.So,ifIwasactuallygoingtoget

peopletocareaboutthisissue,abouttheglobalwatercrisis,Iwouldneedacompletelynewkindofcharitytoevengetthemtoconsidergiving.

Irealizedthatalmostalltheproblemspeoplehadwasaroundmoney.Youwouldhearthingslike,"Theblackhole.Charitiesareblackholes.Idon'tknowwheremymoneygoes.Idon'tknowhowmuchwillactuallyreachthepeopleinneed.Oh,IbettheCEOispayinghimself$5millionand[00:27:00]livinginahousethat'sreallynice."Itwasjustallthisskepticism.

IrememberatthetimecomingacrossaUSATodaystudy.Itfound42%ofAmericansdistrustcharities.Iimaginethat,almosthalfthecountry,cynicalaboutthesystem.So,IhadacoupleideaswhereIthoughtIcouldkindofusethelackofinstitutionalknowledge.Iwasliterallycomingabyssas[00:27:30]anightclubpromoterturnedphotojournalist.So,Ijustdidn'thaveanyofthetrappingsofhowacharityshouldrunorbehave.

Istartedwithacleanslateofpaperandtalkingtoabunchoffriendsandsaid,"Whatwouldtheperfectcharitylooklike?Howwoulditwork?Howwouldthemoneyflow?"Ireallyhadafewbigideasatthebeginning.

Ihavethisadvantageofstartingwithacleanslate,withoutthetrappingsofinstitutionalphilanthropyandI'mjusttalkingtoeverydaypeoplesaying,"Whatwouldtheperfectcharitylooklikethatwouldinspireyoutogive?"Throughallthat[00:28:00]conversation,reallycameupwithafewuniqueideas.

Thefirst,couldwefindawaytouse100%ofeverydonationwewouldevertakeinperpetuitytoonlydirectlyfundwaterprojects?Projectsthatwoulddelivercleanwater?Andopenupasecondbankaccountwherealltheoverheadwouldberaisedandpaidseparately.Peoplesaidthat'scrazy.Like,"You'relivingonafreakingclosetfloor,bro.Howareyougoingtocomeupwithamodelwhereallthemoneyyouraiseyoucan'tevenusetopay[00:28:30]salariesoranoffice?"
