The City Protocol is the whole range of knowledge (open protocols, agreements, good practices, information) that the cities themselves, supported by the academic world and the industrial sector, are generating to create, in practice, a global forum for the development of smart cities.

Smart Barcelona Project City Protocol Society
The City Protocol Society is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to prepare, lead and develop the City Protocol.
The City Protocol Society is comprised by agents from industry, universities/research centres in other

Over 150 delegates from cities, academic institutions, organizations and companies from around the world shared the potential value of constructing a city protocol, with Cisco, GDF and Barcelona City Council as golden partners. OBJECTIVE Implementation of an air conditioning system that provides all buildings or centres of consumption with thermal energy in the form of the hot and/or cold water they need for air conditioning. SCOPE Air conditioning system that incorporates improvements in energy efficiency, environmental impact, management, and economic impact. It is currently installed in the Forum and is being expanded to the 22@ district and the Zona Franca.

OBJECTIVE Introduction of electricity meters in the home in order to rationalize domestic energy consumption patterns. SCOPE Boosting the installation of meters at affordable prices that display power consumption, allowing residents to know their consumption and adopt good practices in relation to the consumption of electricity at home.

OBJECTIVE Installation of smart lighting to enhance lighting levels, uniformity and energy efficiency in the city.
SCOPE
Lighting system consisting of LEDs with sensors to regulate the intensity of lighting as required

OBJECTIVE (Building Energy Advanced Management Systems). Development of an advanced system of integrated management that favours energy efficiency in buildings and special infrastructures from a holistic perspective, taking into account the interior of areas in public spaces and the urban network beyond.
SCOPE Development of a portal with open interoperability that allows the management of diverse and heterogeneous systems, some of them in public spaces (lighting, ventilation, air conditioning) and some other emerging ones such as the electric vehicle.

OBJECTIVE To boost the introduction, promotion and development of electric mobility in the city using private electric vehicles, and the gradual conversion of the municipal fleet to electric vehicles.
SCOPE “Live” is a platform that promotes electric vehicles in the city as an opportunity to position Barcelona as a world centre for innovation in electric mobility. Its implementation will help to reduce exhaust emissions and improve air quality, and reduce noise pollution.

As regards European projects, Barcelona City Council cooperates with various companies with European projects such as:
Development of the Arrowhead project in the framework of the 2012 European ARTEMIS “Innovation Pilot” programme , in the areas of energy and mobility.
European FP7 Smart Cities and Smart Grid project, focusing on energy efficiency. Called SINAPSES.
European LIFE project, an intelligent system for automated urban waste collection.
European BESOS project (Building Energy decision Support Systems fOr Smart cities), based on a platform designed to support decision-taking on matters of energy efficiency.
