Problems and prospects of Bangladesh Railways and it’s importance to the development of our Tourism Industry

c

We will focus on:

• Operational problems of Bangladesh Railway(BR)

• Prospects we can foresee based on present initiatives

• Bangladesh Railway’s importance to the development of our tourism industry.

Mr. Muhit said….

• 24 thousand crore taka spent in railway development• 50 new and corrected plans were taken• 45 new trains were added• 22 rail service were extended

….also mentioned

• Allotment for railway in this financial year is 4 thousand and 612 crore taka… far better than previous years.• Planning connected lines among India, Nepal, Bhutan

and trans-Asian railway. • Dhaka Chittagong railway shall be upgraded to dual

lined.• Parallel rail-bridge with Bhairab, Titas and

Bangabandhu Bridge to develop internal communication.

What’s the logic? • Most of us searched for ticket but didn’t get one.• Most of the people think that train is a cheap, safe and

reliable mean of transport.• Demand is high and every government claims improvement

in this sectorThenWhy railway faces loss

or can’t earn profit as expected?

What future holds for Bangladesh railway?

Problems in operation : Little expansion after India divided…..

Problems in operation :Tickets in Black Market…

Problems in operation :Political and biased appointments…

Problems in operation :Inefficient e-ticket processing…

Problems in operation :Railway land grabbing by political monsters…

Problems in operation :Delay in tender assignment and personal profit making tendency

Problems in operation :Purchase of less powerful age-old locomotive engine.

Slow machines consume more fuel…

Problems in operation :

7 million and 400 thousands of taka vanished in thin air by illusionists of corruption… our ministers. For personal interest, he bagged the money that was meant to spend for railway development. Now his son opens telecom business standing on pile of corrupted money.

Problems in operation :• Government spent 8 billion 260

million taka for DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train.

• operation stopped from the second day

• Our platforms aren’t higher as required

• Instead, they could bring 4 powerful engines and 100 couch with this amount of money since we have limited number of long route trains.

Problems in operation :

• Employees are not satisfied with low salary margin• Lack of their motivation to work • Carelessness to the railway properties• Servicing facilities are not up to date• Skilled and efficient workers are hardly found• ADB signed 430 million dollars to implement 9 projects in

February 2007. Only 1 project done till the date !!!

Prospects we can foresee :Proper planning can make this sector extremely profitable…

Prospects we can foresee :Sufficient initial investment = ample opportunities

Prospects we can foresee :Installment of new hardwares shall bring maximum profit …

Prospects we can foresee :Fighting black market sets promise…

Prospects we can foresee :According to ‘Dhaka Tribiune’ (May 2013)Obaidul Quader signed Metro-rail project with JICA,

that will put our city life at ease…

Prospects we can foresee :

• Railway Recovery Program(RRP) promises of efficiency, labor productivity and closing money losing services.

• Railway is a bulk career and safety mode of transport with cheaper cost. These qualities will attract both passengers and commerce.

• In near future, communication with our deep sea port will require transportation of cargo of both internal and neighboring country. This will make us regional transport hub.

Importance in tourism :

• Most of the successful world tourism destinations even including India introduced customized train trips around places.

• Introducing pleasure ride “Toy Trains” around tourist destinations can be a big step toward improvement of tourism industry.

• Railway is enjoyable jam-free journey which is suitable for tourist’s mean of transport only if it is safe, clean and luxurious.

Importance in Tourism :These black lines all over the map are rail roads….

Importance in Tourism :…and these red balloons indicate tourist destinations of our

country

Importance in Tourism : You can see that, a little planned extension of rail-roads around

tourist points can make all the tourist destinations easily accessible and opens the opportunity of introducing toy train…

Recommendation:

Our recommendation is to solve the operational problems that we stated. Providing proper salary and wages to the employees, training them for the up to date technology, putting a dead end to the corruption and effective policymaking are the recommendations. Above all one point that can sum up all these is:

After spending 152 crore taka for road development in Dhaka, today continuous raining can make the situation this worse. Even our communication minister is at hapless condition (snapshot taken from Prothom Alo newspaper) we bet metro rail can lessen this misery.
