THE ELEMENTS OF ART LINE SHAPE FORM COLOR VALUE TEXTURE SPACE

LINE A continous mark made on a surface by a moving

point

SHAPE An enclosed space, limited to two dimensions- length

and width. Shapes may be geometric (measurable: square, circle, triangle, etc.) or organic (more free flowing/curvy).

FORM- Element of Art A three-dimensional area (height, width, & depth)

which encloses volume. Form can be real or implied.

COLOR- Element of Art Produced by light of various wavelengths, and when

light strikes an object and reflects back to the eyes.

Includes hue: the name of a color (blue, green, etc.), value : the lightness or darkness and intensity: how vivid the color is

VALUE- Element of Art Lightness or darkness; dealing with the degree of

contrast between light, medium, and dark.

TEXTURE- Element of Art The surface quality of an object, the way something

appears to feel. Textures may be real or implied.

SPACE- Element of Art The distance or area around, between, above, below, or

within things. Space may be real or implied.

EMPHASIS BALANCE RHYTHM & MOVEMENT PATTERN CONTRAST UNITY

EMPHASIS- Principle of Design The focal point or center of interest, an area of

heightened interest in an artwork.

BALANCE A principle of design that creates a sense of stability in

a body of work. For an artist it is about arranging the elements of art according to their visual weight.

Balance may be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT The real or implied movement of objects or spaces. It

also refers to the path our eyes follow when looking at a work of art

CONTRAST A large difference between two things; a way of

juxtaposing elements of art to stress the differences between them.

UNITY The quality of oneness or wholeness, the basic

compatibility between all elements within a piece of art.
