LINEA mark on a surface that describes shape or an

outline. It can create texture or value.

Two Techniques for drawing with line:

Where do you see hatching and cross

hatching in this artwork?

LINE quality A description of a line.

Use the categories in the chart below to help you define the quality of a line.COPY THIS CHART DOWN IN YOUR NOTES.

GESTURE LINES Quick lines drawn to

capture the form, likeness, or

movement of a subject.

Generally these are done as a warm up.

OUTLINEOnly drawing the outer edges of an

object. (NOT a trace)

CONTOUR LINES

A pure line drawing. Using ONLY lines to

draw with both inside and out.

BLIND CONTOUR LINES

Typically you do not pick up your pencil while you

draw. Why is this?

A line drawing where you look at the object the entire time you

draw and never look down at your paper.

Continuous LINE DRAWINGA line drawing where you draw the entire subject without removing your drawing tool from the

paper.

Why do artists draw using gesture lines, outlines, contour

lines, blind contour lines or continuous lines?

Because to learn to draw is to learn to SEE.

When focused on an object, drawing using specific lines helps

the artist to focus on the object and begin to SEE the lines and curves

that it has.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Study for the Laundress, 1888

In what ways has the artist used line?

He is using GESTURE lines and CONTOUR lines to capture a scene while

SKETCHING. He also uses hatching and cross

hatching.

David Levine , Rembrandt, 1970

HOW does the artist use line in

this cartoon?

What TYPE of lines are seen

here?

Does this artwork look familiar? Why?

Ben Shahn, Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, 1954

What line drawing

TECHNIQUE did this artist use?

DESCRIBE the line quality of

the lines.

Some lines that we think we see in nature really do not exist. For instance, when you look at the edges of shapes, you think of lines. In the photo of the dogwood blossom, notice that there are no black lines around the flower, only black against white. However in a sketch of the

same blossom, lines are used to define the shape of the flower.
