'You cannot be serious ' McEnroe dons'80s wig as he teams up with Nishikorifor charity
Seven-time grand slam singles champion JohnMcEnroe gave Japan's Kei Nishikori a run for hismoney on Sunday in a charity match for thevictims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Playing in Japan for the first time since 1997, the54-year-old McEnroe took on Nishikori, the 23-
year-old Japanese star who rose to No. 11 in theworld rankings this year.
Nishikori beat McEnroe 1-6, 6-4 and 10-7 in atiebreak but the score hardly mattered asSunday's match was about raising money for theTohoku Tennis Association to help rebuild andrejuvenate tennis in the region devastated by theMarch, 11, 2011 disaster.
'Cannot be serious!' John McEnroe put on a wig for thecharity match and made his usual complaints
'Considering I just got in a few days ago, my bodywas moving pretty well,' McEnroe said. 'I was ableto make some good shots but he took somemercy on me.'
In addition to his competitive spirit, McEnroe
showed flashes of his famous wit. 'Is this a tennismatch or a daycare center, what the heck is going
on here?' he shouted to a sold-out crowd of10,000 when a crying baby interrupted a serve.
With the score tied 6-6 in the tiebreak, McEnroegave an assessment of his opponent's condition -'looks like he's runnin' out of gas' - and made afew of his trademark rants over close calls and theoccasional thrown racket.
Remembering: Kei Nishikori and McEnroe were raisingmoney for the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami
McEnroe said he was more than happy to visit Japan and help out the people on the country'snortheastern coast.
'It's good to try to help people through a difficulttime,' McEnroe said. 'Unfortunately, disasters likethis seem to be happening more and more thesedays.'
Nishikori, who has helped contribute to arejuvenation of tennis in Japan in recent years, said he was impressed with the play of the winnerof seven grand slam titles.
'He played a lot better than I expected,' Nishikorisaid. 'I was surprised. His shots were very good. Ireally enjoyed playing against him and it was agreat experience.'

Wagner wins sixth NEC Masters quad singles title
This season Lucas Sithole has become the first
African player to win a Super Series title and thefirst African to win a Grand Slam wheelchairtennis title. The 27-year-old triple amputee beganhis bid to become the first African to win an NECWheelchair Tennis Masters title in fine form as theUS Open champion raced through the openingset against world No. 1 Wagner without droppinga single game, despite a closely fought deucegame to end the set.
After winning their quad singles round-robinmatch earlier in the week in straight sets, Wagnercame out for the second set much more positivelyand gained an early break, but he put in a doublefault to end a marathon fourth game and allowSithole to level the set at 2-2. Nevertheless, cheered on by his legion of enthusiasticsupporters Wagner regained the momentum andclaimed the last four games of the set to force adecider.
The 39-year-old defending champion then puttogether a similar sequence to wrap up his sixthNEC Masters quad singles 06 62 62.
unieda retains mens singles title
Kunieda became just the second player to winback-to-back NEC Wheelchair Tennis Mastersmens singles titles after a 60 76(9) victory overBelgian world No. 6 Joachim Gerard.
Gerard had demonstrated his immense talent inthe round-robin phase of the competition, inwhich he beat world No. 2 Stephane Houdet ofFrance and world No. 3 Maikel Scheffers ofNetherlands. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Kuniedahad lost his last round-robin pool match to Frenchworld No. 8 Nicolas Peifer.
However, there was little to suggest that Kuniedawas vulnerable as he powered through the firstset of the final without dropping a game.
Gerard battled back from 4-3 down in the secondset and saved three break points before deliveringa booming forehand winner to claim a 5-4
lead. The Belgian saved two more break pointsand delivered an ace to maintain his slenderadvantage at 6-5 before Kunieda forced thetiebreak and went on to earn two match points at6-4 in the tiebreak. But, once more Gerard wasequal to the task and went on to have set pointsat 7-6 and 8-7.
However, Gerards effort finally ended as he senta return long over Kunieda s baseline, giving thetop seed another match point, which Kuniedaduly converted to claim his second successiveNEC Masters title.

Triple the excitement: Beach Tennis atZayed Sports City
If alternate or niche sports is your thing, then whynot try your hand or your forehand at beachtennis at Zayed Sports City (ZSC)
Youre wondering how you can play tennis on a
beach, arent you? Well, its not so difficult. Youhave probably seen it on one of the manybeaches around the UAE.
Its played in three categories; mens doubles, womens doubles and mix doubles, and it iscurrently one of the fastest growing sports in theworld.
ZSC and Professional Sports Services (PSS) areteaming up to organize a number of tournamentsover the next few months, starting with the firston Friday, November 22. It will begin at 09:00next to the tennis complex where ZSC have builtfour competition beach tennis courts.
The tournament is open to all levels of players above the age of 10 in the three doubles teamscategories. Competition will start with non-seededteams playing a round-robin qualification andafter the main draw there will be a knock-out andconsolation knockout draw. The cost of entry isDh75.
And this is not the first time that ZSC and PSS havecombined for such a competition. PSS tenniscoach and tournament organizer Tiago Neves
says the sport is getting more and more popular, especially in countries like the UAE where gamesare part and parcel of a day at the beach.
We are working to promote [the game] in theUAE, he says. We can already see peopleimproving their game and some serious teamscoming to the fore. We already have a rankingsystem for the players set up and we update itregularly.
The PSS Tour will continue over the next fewmonths at Zayed Sports City with tournamentsuntil June. Such is our involvement in the sportnow that one of our main goals is to organize aninternational event (ITF Tour) here in Zayed SportsCity.
We have been getting very good feedback fromall participants, and are seeing increased numbersof players at our events. At the last tournamentwe had 30 mens doubles teams which is 60
players and we had 15 mixed doubles teams.
We are trying to promote the womens doubles abit more but its difficult to get the numbers.
Thats an incredible number of participants for asport which you might say is not competitive, butit just goes to show how popular an activity canget when an element of competition is added.
We supply the racquets for all players and nospecial gear is required. There will be lots of musicto keep the players and spectators entertained, says Neves.
The rules are pretty simple the ball cannotbounce. The court dimensions are 16x8 metersand the net is 1.7 meters high.
The hitting instrument is a beach tennis paddle.Only one touch is allowed and the scoring systemis the same as in tennis. So why not grab apartner and head down to Zayed Sports City on
Friday and see if you have the skills for thisexciting game.

good results from both the boys and the girls
About what it has done for Tennis now?
Our efforts and broad basing has helped us tothrow up an entire new breed of players , wehave some young juniors Sanjar Faiyzev , TimurIsmail , Jurabek Karimov, ShonigmatjonShofayziyev , Nigina Abduraimova, SabinaSharipova , Arina Folts , Guzal Yusupova who
have great future ahead.
Nigina Abduraimova
Though most of these players are from Tashkent, there is lot of development and lot of exposure inall the regions all round. We have many playersfrom all the regions come to the Olympic schoolof tennis in Tashkent from all the regions, In thenext few years Im sure that ch ampions will comefrom our regions.
Do you have any new Strategy for new season?
With the new Davis Cup and Fed Season surelywe will be grooming new faces in our teams, theyhave opportunity to play with experiencedplayer, they should absorb and learn from seniors.
Also playing on the team with players like Istominand Dustov will not only help them increase theirconfidence but also raise their level of game. Ouraim is to prepare our new generation for futurebattles.
On Competitions in the country?
We work with our players and also give themenough competitive exposure in the country aswell, even now we have worked with thembefore with challengers. However they lackexperience, they played well but lost. But I thinkthat tournaments like these challengers willchange the way the young [players think andplay , Im also appreciative of the UTF fororganizing so many events and providing golden
opportunities to our players.
Do you think that Uzbek tennis has more depthin Mens tennis compared to the womens tennis?
I feel there is depth in the womens too, we have young girls who are poised for a leap, we havebeen able to increase the base of tennis players. The growing numbers of students coming forselection to the Republic school of Tennishas shown us the there is tremendous pool ofgood players from regions, and a lot of interest intennis.
So according you how, in how many years wecan have a new Uzbek top 50 star?
I think that in womens it will take about 2 years for our player to reach the top 50 mark ,while in the Men s it will take a little longerlooking at the high competition.

SHOULDER INJURIES IN TENNIS
Interestingly, the most common injury site in theshoulder is not rotator cuff muscles themselvesbut rather the tendons that attach these musclesto the upper arm. There is not a lot of space insidethe shoulder. When muscles fatigue or impropertechnique is used, it is very easy for one of therotator cuff tendons that pass through this spaceto get pinched. When this happens over and over
again, it can lead to tendinitis. Many of theshoulder injuries seen in tennis can be preventedwith a proper stretching program.
STRETCHES TO PREVENT SHOULDER INJURIES
The two most important shoulder stretches fortennis players are the Cross- arm Stretch and theSleeper Stretch. Research show that using thesestretches as part of a regular program willimprove the range of motion of internal rotation.
PREVENTIVE SHOULDER STRETCHES
As with any stretch, perform them after tennisplay and complete two or three repetitions ofeach stretch, holding each for 20 to 30 seconds. This will improve or maintain flexibility in theshoulder.
Cross Arm Stretch
Focus: Improve the flexibility of the muscles in theback of the shoulder and back of the shoulder joint capsule.
Procedure
1. Stand next to a doorway or fence, ifpossible. Raise your racket arm to shoulderlevel. Brace the side of your shoulder andshoulder blade against the wall or fence tokeep the shoulder blade from sliding
forward when you begin the stretch.
2. Using the other hand, grab the outside ofthe elbow of your racket hand and pull
your arm across your chest (figure). Youshould feel the stretch in back yourshoulder.
Note: If you feel a pinching sensation in the frontof your shoulder, discontinue this stretch and useSleeper Stretch to accomplish a similar for thisportion of the shoulder.
Sleeper Stretch
Focus: Improve the flexibility of the muscles in theback of the shoulder and back of the shoulder
joint capsule.
Procedure
1. Lie on your dominant shoulder in aposition you might adopt when sleepingon your side (hence the name.)
2. Place your dominant arm directly in frontof you, with the elbow bent 90 degrees.
3. Using your other arm, push your handdown toward your feet, internally rotating
your shoulder (figure)4. Hold for 20 to 30 seconds.
