Synonyms

SYNONYMS are words with almost the same or

similar meanings. a word having the same meaning as

another word in the same language in one or more of its senses

Synonyms can be any part of speech (such as nouns, verbs, prepositions, adverb, adjective), as long as both words are the same part of speech.

NOUNS, VERBS, ADJECTIVES, ADVERBS OR PREPOSITIONS

Noun-a word used to name a person, place, things, state or quality.

Verb-any of a class of words expressing an action performed.

Preposition-a word expressing the relationship between noun, pronoun, or phrase and other element of the sentences.

Adverb-parts of speech which modifies or limit a verb, an adjective or another adverb

Adjectives- part of speech used to qualify, define or limit a substantive

EXAMPLES OF SENTENCES HAS SYNONYMS

The dancer has a slender figure.

The dancer has a slim figure.

Aya found the sum very difficult.

Aya found the sum very hard.

You should not loiter on the way home.

You should not linger on the way home.

The class will commence at 7 o’clock.

The class will start at 7 o’clock.

The truck make the old bridge tremble.

The truck make the old bridge shake.

ANTONYMS are words with opposite or nearly

opposite meanings. a word which means the exact

contrary of another.

Antonyms can be any part of speech (such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs or prepositions), as long as both words are the same part of speech.

The plate is as clean as it was before so he must be really hungry.

The plate is dirty because he did not wash it.

The little girl whispered her secret to her best friend.

That lady shouted at the top of her lungs with the use of megaphone.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

o Synonyms and antonyms

o are useful to know because they improve reading and writing skills by enriching our vocabulary.

o Familiarising or memorising the synonym or antonym of a word is good technique to remember them.

o Decoding words through context clues is also the best way to remember them instead of recalling one by one.
