Did you know that Nagoya Castle was the single best preserved castle in Japan, to the point that there was a massive architectural study done of it? Technical drawings and measurements, were made of every nook, cranny, and detail big and small of the outside and inside of the main keep and palaces around it.

While the study was happening, the entire castle, including the main keep and Honmaru Palace, was destroyed by firebombing in 1945. The current keep is a Kinkos copy of the old one, rebuilt out of concrete. It's a nice effort, but to be honest it is what it sounds like: a hollow imitation of the original.

The aforementioned architectural study proved to be prescient because it provided a blueprint for rebuilding Nagoya Castle just the way it was, using traditional materials and methods. Plans were put into action and construction on the Honmaru Palace started in 2010 and is finally complete now.

We went the day it opened, and demoliton had already begun on the concrete main keep, which is scheduled to open in 2022. So, for the time being, the Honmaru Palace will be the main attraction of Nagoya Castle.

I'm definitely not implying that is a bad thing: The palace is breathtaking. The smell - it smells like the wood used in its construction, which I guess is the equivalent of "new car smell" for new old Japanese buildings. The sights - there is gold everywhere. The building feels new and old at the same time. The new feeling was actually really interesting for me. I felt like I was standing in a real, living, place rather than a remnant or preservation of the past.

The art is fantastic. Look up or down, left or right, and there is an expertly carved, painted, or sculpted detail. It's an obvious labor of love. Nothing looks tacky or out of place - it's all the real deal.

Finally Nagoya has a unique tourist attraction to be proud of! At first I was apprehensive, but that feeling didn't last long - the art, ambience, and craftmanship of the Honmaru Palace gave me an immense hunger for MORE! Bring on the main keep! Scans of the blueprints of Nagoya Castle can be viewed here: nagoyajo.city.nagoya.jp/20_etsuran/

Friday 6th

Shortstraw Tight Rope 18:30 ¥4,400

Johannesburg indie rock band Shortstraw spent the last year releasing a new video every month. It was a massive effort, involving artists and filmmakers from all over the world. The resulting collection, Those Meddling Kids, is one of the more upbeat and fun albums from 2017. Highly recommended.

Machine Head Electric Lady Land 18:00 ¥8,000

After taking nearly 4 years between albums, it s no wonder Machine Head s newest effort, the aptly named Catharsis, is basically a melange of everything they ve been holding in. It s not their best, but there s a whole lot of it.

Turning the sea into monsters Club Zion 18:30 ¥2,500

It seems every month TTSIM is debuting at a new venue. For July, the Monsters are bringing their hardcore act to one of the loudest venues in town.

Ghost of Matsubara Shooters 19:45 ¥300

Originally from New York, songwriter Tom Fallon’s music has become synonymous with the Nagoya music scene. Ask around. Nearly everyone has a favorite GoM song.

Tuesday 10th

Down and Outs Bar Ripple 19:30 ¥2,000

Weekend shows are for those pampered Tokyoites. Here in Nagoya, we will mosh to the rowdy punk rock of this Liverpudlian band on Tuesday, and still get up for work hungover and bruised the next day. Highly recommended.

Thursday 12th

PJ Morton Blue Note 17:30 ¥8,400

American songwriter PJ Morton's album Gumbo was one of the best R&B albums of 2017, garnering him 2 Grammy nominations. Very few musicians motivate me to pay the extortionate prices of Blue Note, but his live show is not to be missed. There s a second show at 20:30, both are highly recommended.

Back to the NY Music Farm 18:00 ¥2,500

Blending melodic harmonies with tight instrumentation, this Nagoya band is one Anime OP from being the next big thing. Turning the sea into monsters opens.

Saturday 14th

Nagoya Metro Party Lover:Z 22:00 ¥2,500

I m not sure what wild times Madame d Metro has planned for this month’s LGBTQ party, but one thing is for certain. Hotter weather means fewer clothes, and this is a dance floor that is comfortable with nudity of all shapes and sizes. Let your pride show, Metro!

KHEN Club Mago 22:00 ¥3,000

Israeli DJ KHEN has been mixing beats since he was 6 years old, started producing at 11 and was playing packed clubs by the time he was 15. The sets of

this your prodigy are a must for all fans of house and techno. Local legend DJ OGAWA will also be there celebrating his birthday. Highly recommended.

9th Anniversary Party Club about 21:00 FREE

For three days the most underground club in Nagoya is celebrating their birthday with a series of free parties that best exemplifies their sounds: Trance on Friday, Techno on Saturday and Psychedelic on Sunday. German producer JOIX brings his didgeridoo-powered mixes to the decks on Saturday.

Shonen Knife Clup Upset 17:30 ¥3,500

Over 37 years and 22 albums, Shonen Knife has more than proved that they are the Punk Rock Queens of Japan and the world. Highly recommended.

Dragonfly GC Live 19:00 ¥1,500

Last year, local band Dragonfly released their debut album, Guiding Lights. A powerful collection of acoustic rock anthems, it s got their fans hungry for more. They’re joined by The Jerks and David Dycus.

Sunday 15th

Game Over Humans Shooters 19:30 ¥300

Anyone looking for a quiet Sunday meal is bound for a surprise when this alt-rock band starts shaking the walls.

Monday 16th

Bum City Saints DayTrip TBA ¥2,500

Punk has been the soundtrack of class warfare for as long as it’s been a genre. San Francisco’s Bum City Saints ignites the struggle in a modern light with singles like Bullets Not Bailouts.

Wednesday 18th

Holy Hum K.D. Japon 18:30 ¥2,000

International musician Andrew Lee makes ambient ballads colored with his forlorn

vocals. The resulting sound is tragically beautiful and perfect for KD Japon's space.

Friday 20th

Adrenalized DayTrive 18:00 ¥3,300

Friday nights are usually a bit boring in Nagoya, but this one has so much going on I needed to alphabetize it just to keep it straight; which is the main reason this Spanish hardcore punk band got top billing.

The Cosmic Carnival Jammin’ 18:30 ¥2,800

Now the softly-sung indie folk of this band from the Netherlands is much more my speed, but still not my number one choice for this Friday. Highly recommended.

Hankwood and the Hammerheads Red Dragon 18:00 ¥2,500

Punk born on the streets of NY, a great release valve for the working week, but still not the best thing happening on this night. Highly recommended for the moshing crowd.

The Tomo Shaga Tribute Band GC Live 19:00 ¥1,500

Coming in last but in name only, the funkiest band in all of Aichi makes their Friday Night BUZZ debut. Kicking things off with a storytellers performance available via livestream at facebook.com/nagoyabuzz, the show will also feature music from several other local musicians. The highest recommendation.

Saturday 21st

Chicken From Mars GC Live 19:00 ¥1,500

Continuing their dedication to giving a stage to the best and loudest bands, GC is hosting Chicken from Mars and more for this Brazilian rock night.

Sunday 22nd

Ron & Tony Shooters 19:30 ¥300

Half of the alt-rock band The Jerks with some well-loved covers and a few originals. They also play here on July 1st and the Nagoya BUZZ at GC Live on the 10th.

Ghost of Matsubara The Rock 19:00 ¥300

Your second chance this month to hear the original music of Tom Fallon with Sam Keith on the drums.

Wednesday 25th

The Twoks Hunny-Bunny 18:00 ¥2,300

This Melbourne duo’s music exists in that happy place between folk and pop. Their show last year was one of the best I experienced, and I am really looking forward to seeing them in a more intimate space like Hunny-Bunny, along with Kyoto multi-instrumentalist Shogo Matsui. Before the show, The Twoks will appear on the Nagoya BUZZ livestream at facebook.com/nagoyabuzz. Highly recommended.

Saturday 28th

Aoiwao GC Live 19:00 ¥1,500

The newest project of songwriter Yusuke Ikeda, Aoiwao is a beautiful collaboration of artists working together to create music that is both ethereal and intimate. The soundscape on this night is rich with talent new and experienced, including David Dycus, Dismantle The Sun and A Lull In Suffering. Highly recommended.

Sunday 29th

Lechery Club Zion 16:00 ¥4,300

The heavy metal of this Swedish band sounds right out of the eighties: loud and vulgar with enough Satanic imagery to give your momma a heart attack.

Tuesday 31st

Duck and the billys Tokuzo 18:00 ¥2,500

Nagoya s favorite rockabilly band returns to Tokuzo with more of that floor-shaking, iconic sound of the 1950s. They're joined on this night by jazzy rock trio Adult Poker Site and the old jazz of Tabby Cats.

KOMEHYO with large stores in Osu and Nagoya Station, is known for large secondhand department stores offering a variety of discounted merchandise such as jewelry, accessories, watches, designer bags, clothing, cameras, instruments, and anything else that you can think of, at reasonable prices.

The best thing is that KOMEHYO sells merchandise you won’t or usually can’t find anywhere else, often second hand or overstock items in great condition. Unlike overseas stores which sell previously owned items, the things you will find at KOMEHYO are in extraordinarily good shape; Japanese people take great care of their stuff! The quality of the items is high thanks to KOMEHYO’s quality assurance team, who dedicate themselves to verifying the quality of all the merchandise they sell.

KOMEHYO’s philosphy is “Relay Use” which means a product fulfills its pupose by being handed from person to person like a baton in a relay race. KOMEHYO also sells new items, often at much better prices than anywhere else in Nagoya.

Every summer KOMEHYO has a special sale. This year it goes until July 17th. At all of their stores in town they are offering the following discounts:

· Cartier jewelry up to 30% OFF

· New brand bags up to 50% OFF

· Discounts on new watches by Franck Muller

· Luxury brand clothing Summer fashions by Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chanel and more in stock

At their Osu and Nagoya Station Stores they are offering:

· New piercings are all 20% OFF (¥10,000 yen or less)

· Anteprima items all ¥10,000

· Prada wallets ¥39,800

· USED Casio watches for the special prices of ¥5,000, ¥7,000, ¥10,000

And if you like Tom Ford Sunglasses you can pick up a pair for ¥15,000 at the KOMEHYO Osu Main store, but you'd better be quick - stocks are limited!

The great thing about Komehyo is that you can always find a great bargain on whatever you are looking for. Eating Out

Summer is once more upon us and that means it is beer garden time!

The only problem with beer gardens is that the food is sometimes a bit dodgy and if inclement weather sets in then the night is a bust.

Luckily Sapporo Kanihonke in Sakae has an subterranean beer garden festively designed as an underground cave with a lake which contains crab and fish which you can eat freshly caught. It is an otherworldly experience.

I have visited a number of beer gardens during the summer in the Aichi area. My main concern has always been the quality of food on offer. Most, if not all, tend to provide greasy, low-grade beef or pork accompanied by a selection of stodge.

Often the beer is served in large glasses in which it quickly warms. But Kanihonke truly has the atmosphere and ambience of being in a cave in the depths of the ocean, so it is cool and the food is superior to anything I have ever been offered at a beer garden. The beer is icy cold and deeply refreshing, exactly what the doctor ordered to help us through this humidity.

There is a selection of seating options from tables, to counter seating which overlooks the indoor lake, tatami seating and private rooms for groups wishing to dine in more intimate surroundings.

You have the choice to select items from an a la carte menu featuring fresh salad, crab sashimi, crab dumplings, crab tempura and squid. I had never had the sashimi before, and was pleasantly surprised to find the meat tender and subtly sweet. It will certainly be on my list next time I go.

The dumplings were tiny packets of flavor cooked to perfection, each bite causing a taste explosion in the mouth. The tempura sushi was light and crisp and hit the spot.

Other delicacies include udon, crab croquet, prawns in chili sauce, crab gratin, tuna, scallops cooked in butter, and other tasty treats.

And of course they have lots of live crab! You can choose which crab you want including a choice between king snow and hair crab. The price depends on the size of the crab - some of which are quite large.

Gerry McLellan goes fishing and finds a secret beer cave...

The Sapporo Kani Honke "Beer Cave"

When we think of crab a number of adjectives spring to mind. We all know how cute they are, but they are also clever enough to have their skeletons on the outside! This means that all the succulent, flavorful meat is never bruised or damaged in any way. It is always in tiptop condition when feasted upon. The crab served at Kanihonke is no exception. When the skeleton is pierced the juice jumps right out, a clear indication that the crab is fresh. Other things to check are the level of activity of crabs in the tank, as well as their color and the right claw.

All of the Kanihonke crabs were in peak condition!

There are two very affordable all you can drink (nomihodai) courses for two hours featuring a drink menu of Super Dry Extra Cold Draft Beer, Sake, Shochu, Cocktails, Highballs, and Soft Drinks.

The ¥4,000 (¥4,320 incl tax) course includes: edamame, tofu, squid, salad of the day, fried chicken, sausages, sashimi platter, and udon.

The ¥5,000 (¥5,400 incl tax) course includes: edamame, tofu, squid, salad of the day, shrimp tempura, spring rolls, sashimi platter, crab and crab rolled sushi.

The restaurant has staff and menus available in English. The beer hall opens every night from 17:00 to 22:00 until the end of August. It is a veritable corner of undersea paradise in the heart of Sakae!

Located Across From iD Cafe in Sakae!

Open LATE!

Imagine a galaxy far, far away in which an evil leader plans to have a wall constructed to keep out those wishing to open restaurants selling scrumptious foods such as burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, salsa, tacos and nachos; provide copious amounts of tequila to wash it all down, and entertain with mariachi music.

Pretty far-fetched, right? But... somewhere it just might happen!

However, be assured Nagoya, as far as I am aware, no such evil schmuck exists here, so there is no need to panic, there is no need to scurry around and get in a tizzy, you have plenty of time to get your booty, and your other bits, to Kaliman, Nagoya’s newest Mexican restaurant, but get there you must!

Kaliman, named after the Mexican comic superhero, certainly serves food fit for heroes and heroines.

The restaurant is situated across the road from iD, and only a short walking distance from either Sakae or Fushimi subway stations. The interior is brightly decorated in orange and yellow hues and has the feel of an authentic Tijuana eatery. The walls are charmingly decorated with creative artwork by a local artist.

Above the long, narrow bar hang brightly coloed blackboards clearly informing clientele of special offers and main dishes. Musical instruments stand like soldiers at attention atop one corner of the bar almost begging to be played as projections of musicians, some from a forgotten age, blast out toe tapping, butt shaking tunes. Indeed, the instruments seem to lure us toward them like some ancient Siren posse, either that, or the music is overly infectious. At any rate, I was unable to resist a shot on the maracas!

Kaliman boasts an extensive tequila menu featuring more than 120 varieties ranging in price from ¥500 to ¥9,000 per shot. How long would it take, I asked myself, to sample all tequilas Kaliman has to offer? There is also an extensive range of cocktails and frozen cocktails such as Mojitos, Mexican Mojitos, Pina

Coladas and Margaritas. As it was such a tremendously hot day, I treated myself to a Mojito. It was so refreshing that I added ‘tsu’ to the end and got another.

Get it? Mohitotsu!

No? Oh, well...

The restaurant serves authentic Mexican food as well as some original fusion dishes.

Some originals I think especially appealing are:

Jalapeno and garlic soybeans, tequila steamed mussels and oil sardines with coriander on a baguette.

I also sampled the tacos and nachos, both pretty standard Mexican fare, but ones which never fail to gratify the appetite and keep the hunger monster at bay.

The crockery comes in an array of bright colours and matches the interior decor. Most of the tables seat four and the whole place has an open, airy feel, even when seated at the counter.

The owner is a jovial lad and other staff members are efficient and knowledgeable, some hail from Mexico. The food is freshly made to order. Kaliman is is a restaurant I will visit again. It is a place where customers can relax, enjoy some fine food and chill with friends.

It gets three thumbs up from me!

Muy Deliciosa!

Adiós amigos!

Right in the heart of Sakae you will find everything you are looking for in a bar and restaurant - American Dining Bar BJ, "Big Joy", and that’s what you can expect from this renowned and popular nightspot. They have an awesome menu of American food to choose from. They are well known for their juicy burgers of which they have a wide variety to choose from including their monthly special burger. For example this month’s burger is the Mashed Potato & Bacon Cheese Burger - an oversized burger that squeezes mashed potatoes with plenty of gravy sauce onto a bacon burger coated with crispy cheese. Wrap your pucker around that for something really tasty!

Other American favorites include big Tex Mex dishes, BJ Steaks, BBQ ribs and more at decent price. These are not the small portions you might run into at some other joints. Here the portions are big and the hospitality is too. Remember BIG JOY!

BJ is also known for their awesome long bar which boasts a very impressive drink menu with a compliment of flair bartenders who put on a fantastic bar show every night. A lot of customers come to see the extremely popular BJ Girls who put on spectacular pole dance shows, and are not only talented but very acrobatic.

But if you just want to chill they have darts, slots, and loads of big screen TVs which they use to show movies nightly. And every Friday, BJ spices it up with live DJs. The combination of great food, awesome drinks and their shows make BJ a standout, but it is also a great place to hang with friends. It is a large space and has comfortable seating and some intimate tables as well as room for large groups.

One thing I have to tell you about is their unique happy hour. Most bars have a two hour happy hour but BJ’s goes on

for THREE HOURS every day! Normally customers get 50% off drinks from 17:00 to 19:00 - but here’s the secret: If you say NAGMAG they will extend the Happy Hour for an hour until 20:00! That’s right if you tell the staff you want the NAGMAG Happy Hour then you can get 50% off from 17:00 to 20:00! You read it here folks.

Coming up July 4 they will celebrate American Independence Day so drop by. All the staff will be dressed in American costumes and you can get your fill of authentic American food!

The primarily gaijin residents of the Freebell apartments have voted to leave Nagoya and are to set up their own independent state following an historic referendum today.

The vote finished 52% to 48% in favour of Freebexit who have been campaigning primarily on a platform of fear and racism.

“This is a wonderful day for democracy,” said head of the Frebexit camp Doris Johnstone, flanked by referendum strategist Nigel Garage, at a press conference in the Hub Pub. “The great Freebellish people have spoken, and now we can take steps to extricate ourselves from the bureaucrats of Nagoya.”

While the Frebexiters were celebrating, the leaders of the Fremain camp were counting the cost of complacency in their ranks, poor leadership, and being the ones to come up with the bloody stupid idea for a referendum in the first place.

“I am of course devastated that my fellow residents have voted to leave Nagoya,” said Cameron Davids, figurehead of the Fremainers. “But I disagree that I am at any fault for the predicament

that we find ourselves in. Admittedly I sparked this referendum by pandering to a few bigots and then I complacently let it spiral out of control. And of course I should have known that the Freebellish public are too pig ignorant to be trusted with big decisions like these, which is why I am stepping down as leader of the Freebell Residents Association.”

“I think it is right that Davids stepped aside,” argued Johnstone. “It is time to let someone else take the reigns. But whoever is now in charge, I’m not saying it should be me, that’s for others to say, although I would do a great job, of course.

“The important thing is that no more will we have to put up with the tyrannical Nagoyan laws, most of which I have totally made up in order to stoke up fear, such as the requirement to eat miso katsu three times a week. Also we can save ¥35,000 a week not having to pay city tax, which I initially said was going to be put into making a nice new common area, but will now probably disappear into a black hole.”

“Yes,” added Garage, “but we can start by kicking out all the fucking Japs first, can’t we?” at which

“All The News About Japan’s Fourth Most Exciting City!”

Text by Mark Guthrie

JLPT-oscope - Cancer:Your efforts to study for the Japanese Language Profi-ciency Test will be scuppered by a combination of friends inviting you out for drinks and your own procrastination, leaving you hurriedly cram-ming during the last couple of days once you realise that you haven’t even covered a tenth of what you were sup-posed to study. Turn to page 16 to see full listings of how badly you, just like Mystic Mark, are going to fail the test.

A gaijin today posted on various social networks that he felt an earthquake, when in actual fact he didn’t notice it at all.

“I was at work this afternoon, just after lunch, and as usual I was into my third straight hour of flicking through Face-book,” explained Simon Poulter, an ALT at Nishigaoka High School in Nagoya’s Minami-ku, “when a friend of mine posted ‘Earthquake? Is everyone okay?’ I looked up around my office and saw no one react-ing, so I presumed that it hadn’t affected here.”

However, moments later his Facebook started to blow up with other gaijin refer-encing the earthquake.

“Everyone was posting about it, and then my friend Tom, who is at a school just down the road from me, posted ‘Wooa, that was a big one! Thankfully I’m okay here,

hope everyone else is.’ Within two minutes he had received 27 of those ‘shocked face’ emojis.”

Here Poulter, feeling a need for similar social network affirmation, decided to get in on the act and posted for himself.

‘I think that was like 13 on the Richter scale here, pretty scary!!!’ he wrote, despite not feeling the slightest of tremors. ‘I hope everyone’s safe,’ he added so he didn’t look like a dick concerned only for his own wellbeing.

According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency there was no earthquake in the Nagoya region at the time that these social media claims were being made, but they may have caused one.

“Our studies show that Japan actually has very few naturally occurring earthquakes,”

said Professor Taishi Fujita, Head of Gaijin Studies at University of Nagoya. “Most occur when a gaijin feels a bit faint from a hangover, confuses his light-headedness with an earthquake and then reports it online as such. The sudden lurch of the gaijin’s friend to claim to have felt it them-selves online can quite frequently cause movements in tectonic plates.”

Poulter, however, remains unrepentant.

“It was great, all of a sudden I had tonnes of comments and likes,” Poulter said. “And actually, it’s not like I was making it up, really,” he continued. “Now I come to think of it I think I felt it a bit. Like, the room shook or something. I just didn’t notice it because I’m just really used to life in Japan. I’m kind of earthquake proof or something. But I still definitely felt it. Definitely.”

Gaijin Claims to Have Felt Earthquake He Didn’t Really Feel

Old Wife Appointed Japan’s Surgeon General

Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten claims to have solved the country’s aging population with their new impregnation service.

“The main problem is that young people nowadays just don’t have time to procreate,” explains Kana Nagata, head of sales for the online sales com-pany. “Working hours are long, there are too many 3-D latte art cades to visit, too many selfies to put on ‘insta’ and too many pointless smartphone games. These are all endeavours of the highest importance for Japan’s youth, so there is no time to get down to the tedious practice of making babies. We have solved this problem.”

By selecting from a dropdown menu on the Rakuten website

consumers can choose the type of man to come directly to their home and provide the impreg-nation service, and it is already proving to be a big hit.

“I work for a large exporting and importing company and my long hours means that I have little time for dating, let alone getting pregnant,” said Nana Kato, 26, from Nagoya. “But with just a couple of clicks on the website a man was delivered to my apartment. Two weeks later I was up the duff!”

“It is a wonderful service,” agreed Natsuho Funahashi, 28, from Ichinomiya. “My husband is a salaryman, and often at-tends nomikais after work and then soaplands after that, mean-ing that by the time he gets into

the marital bed he is usually as soft as fresh tofu. But the Rakuten guy came round and got the job done while I was washing the breakfast dishes. It was very convenient.”

Rakuten is not the only com-pany trialling this new service. British takeaway delivery app Deliveroo is currently rolling out an impregnation service by the name of ‘D’liveroo. Mean-while Amazon is branching out into the aging population services market in other ways, by delivering euthanasia to the doors of the elderly.

“We have taken over your life,” says Kenta Tanaka, CEO of Amazon Japan. “We may as well take it from you too.”

Rakuten to Solve Aging Population Problem

Japan’s health department today announced the appointment of a new Surgeon General, 88-year-old Sachiko Watanabe.

Watanabe, who has no official medical training and has no professional experience in the sector was a surprise choice to be the head of Japan’s Public Health Service, but was warmly welcomed by Japan’s increas-ingly right-leaning government.

Japan, along with China, is one of only two major world economies that officially instructs its medical professionals to offer patients traditional herbal remedies over, what experts call, ‘real medicine that actu-ally works’, so this appointment should not really come as a surprise. However, some observers have raised concerns that this

move is another signal of the leading Liberal Democratic Party attempting to return Japan to more simpler times.

“We have seen attacks on women’s civil rights in the guise of amendments to Article 24 of the Constitution and a determined focus on ‘family values’ that reflect more the outlook of 1918 than 2018,” said Saya Mitsuda, a civil rights activist. “But the appointment of this Old Wife takes us back to 1718. There is not an expert in the world who would agree with this.”

However Gozo Amano, spokesman for the LDP rubbished Mitsuda’s claims: “It is well known that the world’s population is fed up of ‘so called experts’, as witnessed by

Britain’s Brexit vote and of course the elec-tion of Donald Trump. The appointment of Watanabe is the next logical step.”

Watanabe was keen to begin her new role quickly and has already announced a swathe of policies that have come into effect as of immediately.

“Despite what ‘medical science’ tells you, most body heat is lost through your stomach, so to conserve energy in winter the wearing of haramaki around the stomach will be compulsory, having the additional benefit of stopping thunder from stealing your belly button,” Watanabe announced from a small café at which she gathers with friends to complain about young people.

“Also, during the winter months all windows must be kept wide open, despite research showing that the influenza bug thrives in cold, dry air, while in summer sleeping with a fan directly on you will be banned under pain of death. Oh, and if you are sick at any time – from a cold to cancer - just drink tea, wear a mask and swallow down any random handful of herby pills you can find in the pharmacy. That’s pretty much it.”

“You’d think for such an advanced country that we wouldn’t believe in this kind of absolute nonsense,” said activist Amano. “But you’d be very wrong.”

Honorific News:In Japan there are various hnorific titles given to individ-uals. How do you know which one you are? Take the Daily Nag Title Test: Q1. A Japanese friend tells you over a couple of drinks that she thinks her husband is cheating on her. How do you respond? (a) Talk to your friend in a mature way and suggest that she confront her husband honestly and con-sider couple’s counseling. (b) Throw your arm around her shoulder, tell her that there are plenty more fish in the sea, and let her know that you are there for her no matter what. (c) Go on a 40-minute soliloquy about how Japanese don’t really see cheating as a problem, ignore her confused looks as you go on to list all of Japan’s problems as you perceive them to be, before plying her with booze and taking her to a love hotel. Turn to page 17 to take the full test and find out if you are a ‘san’, ‘chan’ or ‘baka gaijin’

Japan Life

People in Nagoya work hard and play hard. If you are a baseball fan and want to see for yourself go to a ball game at Nagoya Dome, home of the Chunichi Dragons. Currently the Dragons are ranked fifth among six teams in their league, but the crowd at Nagoya Dome is nonetheless enthusiastic and the atmosphere is electric.

During the game there is a lot of family entertainment. This includes the 18 cheerleaders from the Cheer Dragons who spread out on to the field after the bottom of the fifth inning and dance to ABBA’s "Dancing Queen" along with the crowd, the blue and pink mascot dragons SHAOLON and PAOLON, and DOALA (the koala in baseball uniform), who does a backflip after the seventh. Doala’s attempt is not always successful but is cheered by the home side and visitors alike.

Watching the crowds is probably the most interesting part - many wave towels bearing the shirt number of players while a few wear pink and blue headbands with large round koala ears inspired by DOALA! The cheering is very orchestrated - lively and vigorous yet at the same time very disciplined. There are many songs, for every batter and for different situations during the game. Here is a loose translation of a song made for players who have come from abroad to add firepower to the Dragons: “Cross the sea and make the dream come true, victory in our hands, together with us...”. When I was there during a game against Hanshin Tigers two

schoolage girls behind me were singing almost non-stop with a high pitched vocaloid like voice! One of them told me she wanted to join the Cheer Dragons eventually.

To experience all this make sure you get a seat allocated to Dragons fans outfield first base side if you don’t mind the constant banging of drums, blaring trumpets and the crowd standing up more than half the time. From this area you will probably see the backside of first baseman Dayán Viciedo (shirt no. 66) from Cuba or outfielder Steven Moya (no.44) from Puerto Rico when the team is fielding. Other players from overseas include pitcher Dillon Gee (US) and Zoilo Almonte from Dominica. There is another supporters area on the third base side, which is just as interesting because you can hear the fans of the visiting team not far away.

Before the game I also had the chance to talk to some of the diligent support staff at Nagoya Dome. I was impressed by the members of the “Baseballmates,” five charming young ladies in sporting attire who sprint on to the ground to deliver a new ball to the umpire and help other events during the game. They have a passion for the Dragons and pride in their job. Coming from Tokyo I asked them why girls in Nagoya were so exuberant - they pointed to “Nagoya meshi,” the local cuisine which is mostly hearty and high in energy. You might see the Baseballmates greeting spectators outside the gate when

the dome opens before the game.

With summer just around the corner there will be three games in early July where the dome will be lit up by displays of LED poi to celebrate Tanabata (the star festival). This event is a fusion of baseball and one of Japan’s age-old traditions which celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively). According to legend, they were two lovers separated by the Milky Way, and are allowed to meet only once a year. People generally celebrate this event by writing wishes on small pieces of paper called tanzaku, and no doubt Nagoya Dome will be filled with messages wishing for another Dragons victory.

Ask any local Dragons fan about game dates. Access to Nagoya Dome is easy: If you are coming from central Nagoya, hop on board Meijo Line in the clockwise direction and get off at Nagoya Dome-mae Yada and follow the crowd. The underpass from the station looks like a hall of fame with pictures of Dragons players. Allow plenty of time because the dome itself is some walking distance from station. There is a huge Aeon shopping mall connected to the dome which is open until late. You can enjoy a hot coffee or a bite at the food court before heading home. The trains will be less crowded by the time you finish supper.
