Rugs for Autumn/Winter

Kitting Your Horse out for WinterA lthough few of us like to think

about the looming prospect

of another long winter and

the long, dark nights, cold weather and

mud that go with it, it is sensible to

plan ahead and make sure you and

your horse are properly prepared.

Winter goes hand in hand with

sufficient rugging up of your horse, to

ensure they stay warm and dry through

this predominantly cold and wet

season.

Here we look at some great

winter rugs for a range of horses, from

Equestrian.com. From light weight rugs to keep the rain

off the more sturdy types to heavy weight combo styles

to keep the thinner skinned horse warm and cosy, there is

something for everyone.

There are so many rugs available today, from rain

sheets to quilts, coolers to heavy weights and fleeces to

fly sheets, all in different styles and prices it often creates

a minefield when selecting the correct ones for your

horse. Human interaction with horses including trimming,

clipping, bathing and grooming can reduce a horse’s

natural ability to regulate his own body temperature

depending on the environmental conditions. A fully clipped

thoroughbred that struggles to keep weight on is going

to need to be more ‘rugged up’ than a well conditioned,

hardy native pony in a full coat. Therefore we must

carefully consider what your horse needs and remember

whilst it is important not to let your horse get cold in

miserable weather it is also necessary to ensure that he is

not over rugged either, as this is not only uncomfortable

for him, it can lead to sweating skin rashes, rubbing and in

extreme cases sores and abscesses

It is essential to make sure that your horse’s rug fits

properly. It should have a soft, padded area on the withers

to prevent soreness and the rug should fit snuggly but not

too tight. A thin, lycra stretch bib can be used underneath

to help prevent rubbing. A rug should be fully breathable

and allow to the horse full freedom of movement. Be

sure to change your horse’s rug regularly and check for

any damages that should be attended to straight away.

When the weather gets very cold and wet, layering is often

a better solution than using one very heavy rug. When

turned out, horses tend to stay dryer, rug dry quicker and

the horse is more protected.

What and when was the connection made to come up with the idea of horseboarding?

We started on snow. One winter we roped a door to

the saddle and started messing around in the fields with

Charlie riding and me balancing on the door.

We then progressed to using skateboards on roads.

At that point I saw an article in The Metro advertising the

sport. Charlie thought I was crazy to want to take it to that

level but it couldn’t have worked out better…I remind her

of that every day. Ha!

Can you tell me about the feeling that you get from the sport and how it works for the team?

It makes me so nervous that I can often feel sick

before we start or feel like my heart is going to fall out of

my mouth, but once we start it’s such an adrenaline buzz.

To be able to do something new like that in front of

such big crowds makes you feel great and to do it with

Charlie, who is also my girlfriend, makes it extra unique,

although that can sometimes make it difficult. Ha!

We’ve been champions for the last four years so this

sport has already produced so many amazing moments for

us to remember.

What equipment do you need to get started? And what skills do you need?

A mountain board (off road skateboard), a rope

INTERVIEW : Horseboarder Ross Towner

Dead Pigeons take to the Boards

H ave you ever felt that although you are in love

with your horse and the rewards and wonders

it can bring, you still yearn to do something

that is exciting and different?

There is now a new Team sport sweeping the country

that can fill in this gap for you. NagMag talked with

Horseboarder Ross Towner, member of the Dead Pigeons

Team based in the South for an insight to this up and

coming sport.

TEAM : Dead Pigeon (National Champions 2012, 2013, 2014)HORSE : Father Seamus (Naboo) – 15.3 TB,RIDER : Charlie Buss – 28 Years OldBOARDER : Ross Towner – 31 years oldFASTEST HORSEBOARDING SPEED : 40.1 mph

Charlie has always worked with horses. Ross has always

enjoyed a large number of sports such as football,

tennis, hockey etc.

Have you ever been the slightest bit interested in horses?

I personally had never been interested in horses until

I met Charlie six years ago. I now have to be…for the good

of the team…and my relationship. Ha!

Charlie has grown up with horses since she could

walk and always been keen to try new odd exciting horse

sports, so this was an easy decision for her.

Crave an adrenalin rush that you can share with your equine partner?

(water ski rope) and a horse.

Those who like to skate need to work with a friend

who can ride and build the team up together.

The boarder needs balance, stamina and large amount

of guts while the rider needs to be confident and assertive

and get the team round the course with the boarder still

attached and to do that at the fastest possible speed.

How did the idea start, and then how did it get to its present situation, as an up and coming team sport?

Daniel Fowler-Prime, one of our fellow competitors,

invented the sport and got it up and running to where it is

today through hard work and persistence.

He is still competing to this day but luckily we’ve

managed to knock him off the top spot for the last few years.

There’s now a large professional team that work

behind the scenes to keep Horseboarding UK running

smoothly at the current level but with a large eye to

the future and how it can progress. Daniel is primarily a

professional horseman, working in film and television.

While training with a friend they decided to tie a board

to the back of a car, and at that time he had a ‘light bulb

‘moment and wondered if he could somehow tie a board

and be towed behind a horse. By 2005, this presented

many photo opportunities and magazines and television

throughout the world were treated to wonderful images of

horses towing surf boards on the beaches of Cornwall. The

following year the first Surf boarding competitions were

held in France and by 2008 had spread to the UK. Daniel

thought it would be easier to take this new sport off the

beaches and into fields, hence drag racing; still only run

in straight lines was borne. In 2011 while visiting Olympia

Horse Show, he was watching the teams of four Driving

Trials and decided that perhaps boarding could be carried

out using a similar kind of slalom course, creating a more

entertaining and team oriented sport and this is where it is

at today.

Where would a reader go to get started and to see horseboarding in practice?

Horseboarding UK have a website and run regular

training camps where all the skills can be picked up and

everybody meet.

The championship is run all over the country

at the Living Heritage country shows from March to

September.

What’s the best and worse feeling when participating?

I’m very lucky, I have the fastest horse, champion

rider and a real passion for going stupidly fast, so

the best feeling for us is when we’re really clicking

as a team and pushing the time limits each race, but

obviously its racing and in racing, sometimes you lose…

I’d say that would be the hardest thing sometimes. Even

though we have to accept that…we’re not great losers.

Ha!

Can you use any breed of horse, or are there specific breeds that lend themselves to boarding?

You can use any breed of horse. We’ve raced

against Gypsy Cobs, Hunters, ponies, all sorts, but if

you really want to compete at the top with the big boys

then the ideal breeds are Thoroughbreds or polo ponies.

They have the best results in Horseboarding. Polo

ponies are ideal for the quick turns and fast acceleration.

But the thoroughbreds have the highest top speeds.

How do you train, the horse? You start off slow, in walk getting the horse used

to the rope attached to the saddle and the sight of

boarder that will be riding behind them. Once they

feel comfortable with all the elements of the team and

the equipment involved you can start practicing it in

a canter and going round bends etc. There’s a weave

element in the course as well so that is an obstacle that

you would need to run the horses through.

We take ours to Golden Cross Equestrian Centre

where they have an indoor sand school to help them

learn the course and build the boarders stamina.

Where would you like to see the sport in say five years time?

It’s progressed every year so far, but in five years

time I’d like to think that we could possibly race the best

in the world at International events around the world on

specially designed courses.

It’s a sport, it’s a show, its two genres coming

together to make something truly unique and exciting

so I can only encourage people to get involved. NM

This year, Quob Stables Equestrian Centre in Durley, Southampton has been raising funds for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance with proprietor, Beth Boyes, going the extra mile this September by taking part in the Mongolia Horse Challenge. This marathon challenge involves horse riding over 160km in just 6 days over the Mongolia plains with overnight camping under the stars through landscapes largely un-visited by other tourists.

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance receives no government funding, and offers a vital service to all local horse riders.

Quob Stables kick starting the fundraising with their annual Charity Fun Day in May which raised over £800 with around 300 families enjoying a host of equestrian displays from local experts, pony rides, a bouncy castle and face painting.

National Equine Health Survey 2015 Results

W e are all familiar with the old adage ‘no foot, no horse,’ but the

results of the latest National Equine Health Survey (NEHS) show that lameness is three times more likely to be caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis in the limb rather than problems in the foot.

The horse’s foot is fundamental to soundness and performance but NEHS results have shown consistently that limb lameness, as opposed to foot lameness, is in fact the biggest syndrome affecting horses. In the latest survey, conducted in May, a total of 18% were recorded as lame. 13.5% of these were recorded as suffering with lameness such as osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. Meanwhile foot lameness was recorded in 4.5% of returns, a similar figure to previous years.

Josh Slater from the Royal Veterinary College, who is member of BEVA’s Health & Medicines Committee and analysed the NEHS data, said: “NEHS is now producing important evidence that is replacing subjective opinion. While the lameness figures were initially surprising, given that the foot has been generally regarded as

Limbs not feet are main cause of lameness reveals horse survey

the main problem area, the fact that these figures have remained consistent over the past three years gives constructive credibility to the data. Our findings will help owner vigilance with day-to-day healthcare as well as help prioritise on areas for future veterinary education and research.”

The six most notable disease syndromes identified in the 2015 National Equine Health Survey are consistent with findings over previous years:1. Lameness 2. Skin diseases 3. Back problems 4. Recurrent Airway Obstruction 5. Laminitis6. PPID (‘Equine Cushing’s Disease)

23.2% of horses were reported as being overweight with a Body Condition Score of 3.5-5, continuing the upward trend seen in previous years. Next year’s survey will explore links between obesity and the possible associated rise of obesity-related diseases such as equine metabolic syndrome and laminitis.

The Survey also enables participants to report on any health problems not covered in the survey

questions, giving them a chance to shape future survey subjects.

Gemma Taylor, Education Officer at Blue Cross explains: “This year 11% of our free text answers mentioned gastric ulcers giving a valuable insight into the prevalence gastric ulcer syndrome in the principally leisure horse NEHS population. I n a thrilling six-horse jump-off the USA’s Beezie Madden and her own Cortes ‘C’ won the prestigious King George V Trophy for the second year running, a

feat last achieved in 1962 by the Italian Piero d’Inzeo riding The Rock!

“I’m happy to break records!” said Beezie, who already had the Bunn Leisure International Stakes under her belt partnered with Breitling LS. “It’s quite an honour!”

The Templant Events Queen Elizabeth II Cup was won by Chloe Winchester from East Anglia on her mother’s Avoca Valkyrie who beat five top riders in the barrage with her speedy time of 49.57 seconds.

“It’s a dream come true! I couldn’t have done any better!” said Chloe. “I knew Phillip Miller and Caritiar Z were after me, so I just kicked on!”

Trevor Breen took the Bunn Leisure Vase with Georgie D’Auvray EC, a huge class with more than eighty international starters, while Michael Whitaker and Quelbora Merze, a horse owned by an investment syndicate, triumphed in the two-phase Bunn Leisure Trophy with the fastest time of 37.69 seconds.

Back by popular demand was the Amlin Plus Eventers Challenge with a slightly different format in that all obstacles, whether showjumps or cross-country fences, were in the main International Arena. Kiwi Andrew Nicholson cruised round clear on Cillnabradden Evo, a horse he has ridden for just over a year, in 124.94 seconds. Ireland’s Elizabeth Power riding Doonaveeragh O One finished a close second in 125.02 seconds having taken down one pole.

“The Eventers Challenge is very different to what I do every weekend!” said Andrew. “It’s a very intense competition but I enjoy coming. It’s a fun day out!”

Three judges scored the contenders for the Dick Saunders Trophy in the Underwood Supreme Pony Championship with the winner being Beat The Boss, the working hunter pony, ridden by Susie Eddis. In the BHS Supreme Ridden Horse Championship there was a tie between the hunter and hack, forcing a ride-off, with the title going to Jayne Ross and the lightweight hunter Time 2 Reflect.

“It was Jayne’s second gallop that did it for me!” commented judge Margaret Shaw.

Olympic course builder Bob Ellis picked up the Dorian Williams Trophy for his outstanding contribution to the show, having officiated for an amazing forty years. And, by way of thanks, a group of international riders picked up

Bob and dunked him in the water jump! NM

son Liberty Lawson riding Waytown Pablo

Qualified Small Tour Show Jumping Parwood EC

Liberty Lawson and her pony Waytown Pablo have qualified to enter the Small Tour Show Jumping. The pair have been out jumping small courses throughout the early summer and they qualified for the 50cm and 60cm.

Liberty’s mum, Karen told us about them “Pablo is an 8 year-old 12.1hh Dartmoor Hill Pony. We bought him at five months old when he was taken off the moor and auctioned with another 14 coloured hill ponies at Reading market. Their future was very uncertain and I felt compelled to give one a good home. Libby was eight at the time and the pair of them have grown up together and are inseparable.”

“Libby broke Pablo in herself when he was four and from an early age he showed a passion for jumping. Pablo is small in height but huge in personality, always happy and ready for an outing. Liberty and Pablo qualified and competed in last year’s Sunshine Tour at Great Bookham Equestrian Centre and had a wonderful day (didn’t win but lots of fun)! When Libby heard that the Sunshine tour would be held at her favourite venue Hickstead this year, she was very keen to qualify. It is her dream to ride at Hickstead… and even more special that it is on her pocket rocket pony.”

Gemelle Gracey-Davison with John’s Gem Qualified Ridden Thoroughbred Surrey Spring Show

“I’m a professional National Hunt jockey and I have got into doing shows this year with an ex-racehorse, John’s Gem. My mum, Zoe and Andy (mums partner) bred John’s Gem (William) so we have had him all his life. William ran 15 times under rules and won a 3 mile 1 furlong hurdle at Plumpton Racecourse with me on him! Having a couple of minor injuries through his racing career he’s been lightly raced and he came out of training at the end of May this year.”

“William and I qualified for the Sunshine Tour Championship at the Surrey Spring Show, we won the ex-racehorse class and then went on to win overall Ridden Champion. I was very surprised as it was only his second show and he had only been out of training a few weeks.”

“I’m very much looking forward to riding at Hickstead, it’s such a lovely showground and one of the biggest in the country. My little sister Charlotte has also qualified her pony for the working hunter class, so hopefully we should have a lovely family day out!”

Olivia Brown with Ash Qualified Show Jumping, Working Hunter Pony, M&M, First Ridden Topthorn Arena

“Olivia (Lolly) Brown has been riding for several years now as an active member of Easton Harriers Pony Club. Her pony Ash (New Forest aged 11), has been with us since last October and has won the hearts of even our non horsey members of the family… naughty but very sweet!

Originally I hadn’t planned on her competing much but we have recently got the bug for going out and about. I hadn’t towed a trailer before so to start with we would turn up at pony club events ridiculously early so that I didn’t have to embarrass myself by looking like a beginner trying to reverse into the last space! Now we travel to local shows and qualified for the Sunshine Tour in 60cm jumping and some M&M showing classes at Topthorn Arena, Suffolk. Olivia aged 10 has surprised me in that she enjoys dressage and showing as much as the jumping. Tack cleaning and poo picking…not so much.

Hickstead is by far the furthest distance I ever thought we would travel but really looking forward to staying all weekend and being part of a truly novice event.”

Clare Howard riding Amke Qualified Intro Dressage West Sussex Riding Club

Clare told us all about her beloved mare, “Amke is a 16.2hh Friesian, with a lot of attitude and opinion but very kind and gentle. I’ve had my lovely mare for three years, her passport name is Willi but I call her Amke (means noble and beloved), I just couldn’t call her Willi! I found her at a dealer’s in Friesland in Northern Holland, I’d gone looking for a sensible 6 year-old, broken in and was ready to bring-on. Amke was a feral 5 year-old, straight out of the field, dragging 6’6”Dutchmen around the yard but there was something about her I liked.”

“I’ve largely done in-hand showing, hunting with The Southdown’s Bloodhounds and fun rides but this year we decided to have a go at dressage. She only stopped growing over the winter (aged eight) and until then she’s been ‘all legs and no brain’ in the arena – like Bambi on ice. We started having lessons in April this year and we’ve had great fun learning together (I’m 40!).

When a friend told us about the Sunshine Tour we thought it would be a lovely aim – what a great opportunity to compete on the hallowed turf of Hickstead in just our first year of competition. So we set our minds on qualifying at Intro level. This has been quite a challenge as in April we were tanking around the track ping-ponging off the sides of the arena at trot. Amke was bred to pull a carriage with an impressive high head carriage so it’s taken a lot of persuasion to get her to work in a lower outline. But she’s such a genuine mare and is really trying hard, and thanks to a lot of help from our instructor and hard work all around we got our qualification on our fifth attempt.”

“I can’t wait for the Championship, just getting there is a fantastic achievement and so encouraging for us, it’s definitely spurred us on for the future.”

Amy Terrill with Elmhurst Midnight Star Qualified Delightfully Dapper and Lead Rein Rider Crofton Manor

“Amy is very excited to have qualified for the Sunshine Tour Championship! She has weekly lessons at the Merrie Stud in Hampshire and at 7 years old only started competing on her pony Bobby (Elmhurst Midnight Star) last summer. As Bobby’s breeding is unknown she is restricted to which classes she can enter at local shows, so she is extremely proud to be taking Bobby to the Sunshine Tour.”

“Amy’s taking part in two Small Tour showing classes, she’s has qualified and entered the Delightfully Dapper Championship Lead Rein and the Lead Rein Showing Championship. Bobby is 9 years old and 13.1hh, he still has lots to learn in his training and is very cheeky at times but always looks after Amy when she’s riding him. Amy loves competing and learning together with Bobby. She is so dedicated in the preparation of show days and the early morning starts. She is really looking forward to traveling to and being able to ride at a large well known showground with all the other competitors. She can’t wait to sleep in the lorry and go to the Saturday evening BBQ.”

Calum Carlin with Casper Qualified Prelim Dressage Glebe Farm Equestrian

“I started riding Casper after his owner, Jo Day was hospitalised just over a year ago and our progress has come on leaps and bounds. Once Casper and I got our confidence up, we started venturing out to do some Intro Dressage Tests. He has only really started his ‘Dressage Career’ in the last four months after mainly show jumping and we’ve been quite successful. Casper is a 17hh, 9 year-old grey Oldenburg, with an exceptionally quirky personality. Leading him to the field can present difficulties, as he likes to have a play en route and while we prance around the school, he likes to add sound effects and throw in some shapes! But this keeps us both on our toes, and makes it all the more rewarding when we manage to complete a test with no dramas!”

“Casper and I are very excited to be given the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious venue as Hickstead. The Sunshine Tour has got the whole yard excited and everyone is showing their support by coming down to make a weekend of it and cheer us on at the side-lines. I’ve known

Bee from Beewear (Official Merchandiser of Hickstead) for over 12 years and over tea and cake, she agreed to provide us, both myself and Casper, with some clothing products. Casper and I are ever so excited to be packing our bags for our weekend away, taking part in the Sunshine Tour at Hickstead. I have a feeling Casper will be taking a bigger suitcase than me, as he does love his home comforts!”

Give Horses a Go Day on 13th September

L ocal ladies are being

encouraged to give horse

riding a go as part of

an exciting new campaign called

‘This Girl Can Ride’. The campaign

includes the first national Give

Horses a Go Day, which will give

people the chance to get closer to

horses and try riding for FREE with a

unique taster session.

The new campaign, launched

by the British Equestrian Federation

(BEF), is endorsed by Sport England

under its popular This Girl Can

campaign banner and aims to get

women aged 26+ to try something

horsey. Whether it’s a simple visit to

a participating riding school to meet

some of the horses, or trying a riding

lesson for the first time, the first

annual ‘Give Horses a Go’ day on

13th September will give everyone

the chance to get closer to horses.

Quob Stables in Durley,

Hampshire and Grove Farm riding

school in Iden, East Sussex are

two of more than 50 approved

riding schools taking part in the

campaign, each of which is offering

free sessions for beginners. You

don’t need lots of expensive kit, just

sensible trousers and a pair of boots

or shoes with a small heel. A full list

of participating venues can be found

on the BEF’s Hoof website www.

hoofride.co.uk, and the website also

contains tips on what to wear and

what to expect.

With some two million girls and

women already taking part in riding,

it’s a sport that already attracts

high numbers, which is perfect for

encouraging even more women to

Give horses a go with a FREE taster session on Sunday 13th September

take up the sport.

What’s more, horses

aren’t judgemental,

so there’s no

pressure to get all

the techniques right

straight away: you

can take it at your

own pace and figure

out what suits you

best.

Speaking for

the BEF, Head of Participation Anna

Hall says: “Sport England is doing a

great job in encouraging women to

take part in physical exercise, and

as part of the riding community

we have an important role to play.

Some exercise improves fitness,

some relieves stress, some gets you

out in the open air – but we believe

that horse riding delivers all that and

more!

“We are a sport with great

female role models and lots of

active female participation,” Anna

concludes, “so we are urging

everyone to get off the sofa and

down to the stables to discover

horses today.”

And if you’ve ridden before, but

had to stop, now might be the time

to get back into the saddle and pick

up the reins again. The Give Horses

a Go days are open to returning

riders as well.

The sessions at Grove Farm

Riding School, Iden, Near Rye run

from 2pm and will include Riding

Equerry High Fibre Cubes

In this issue Equerry Horse Feeds Senior Nutritionist, Louise Jones looks at the importance of fibre and answers a reader’s question

F ibre is the most important part of your horse’s diet

and lack of it increases the risk of problems such

colic, ulcers, diarrhoea and dehydration.

Horses don’t have the enzymes needed to digest

fibre and instead rely on cellulolytic bacteria in the hind-

gut to ferment the fibre into volatile fatty acids, which

can be absorbed and utilised as an energy source. The

fermentation process takes considerable time, which is

why energy from fibre is commonly referred to as ‘slow

release’. Adequate dietary fibre is also essential for the

synthesis of B-vitamins by beneficial bacteria in the hind-

gut.

Typically, a horse will consume 2-2.5% of their

bodyweight as food daily (i.e. 10-12½ kg dry matter/ day

for a 500kg horse). For most horses at least three-quarters

of their daily food intake will be provided as forage. This

give the horse plenty of fibre to chew on, stimulating saliva

production and ensures their hind-gut remains healthy. In

some cases lower levels of forage may be recommended

e.g. overweight horses or ponies. However, intakes below

1% of bodyweight (i.e. 5kg for a 500kg horse) are not

advisable and could lead to serious problems.

Typically, a horse turned out for 12hrs will receive

around 50% of their daily forage from the grazing.

Although, obviously this depends on factors such as the

time of year and the amount of grazing available. For

good-doers or individuals prone to laminitis it may be

necessary to restrict their access to pasture and provide an

alternative source of forage (e.g. soaked hay).

Hay contains good levels of digestible fibre but it can

be dusty, which can result in respiratory problems. Soaking

the hay for 30min will help to

remove any harmful dust particles.

For horses whose calorie intake

needs controlling, hay can be

soaked for longer periods (i.e. 8-12

hours). This will leach out many of

the calories, leaving just the fibre

element. Alternatively, for donkeys

and very good-doers, a proportion

of their daily forage can be replaced

with low-calorie, oat or barley

straw, provided they have no dental

problems.

Haylage has become

increasingly popular for hard-

working horses or those with

respiratory problems; as it generally contains higher levels

of energy and protein and lower levels of dust compared

to hay. However, as haylage tends to contain 15-20%

more water than hay you will need slightly more of it

to ensure a similar fibre intake. In addition, haylage will

deteriorate when exposure to air, so once open bales must

be used within 3-5 days.

When fed alone, none of the forages discussed above

will provide the horse with optimal levels of vitamin and

minerals and your horse will

need an appropriate hard

feed. Some hard feeds

can also be an excellent

source of fibre for example,

Equerry High Fibre Cubes

contain 21% fibre and can

even be used as a forage

replacer for horses that

can no longer not chew

normal forage (e.g. older

horses with poor dental

condition). Other ways that

you can add some fibre to

your horse’s diet is to feed

a little chop or unmolassed

sugar-beet. NM
