A Message from Pastor Bernau

4

The ELCA Youth Gathering is on my mind these days. Yes, I know there are sll around 400 days to go unl the 2018 Gathering in Houston, TX begins. But, I can already envision the arrival of 30,000 youth and crazy adults wearing bright colored shirts and excited to experience God’s presence in a new way. I can already picture the difference this massive number of people parcipang in service projects will make in the lives of the people and the places of Houston. I can already foresee the bond that each youth group will form as they embark on an adventure like nothing they’ve ever experienced together before.

And, I can already imagine how their stories will touch the hearts of the people in their home congregaons and inspire faith and hope. All of these things and more are what the ELCA Youth Gathering is all about, and therefore I am passionate about providing an opportunity for all youth to parcipate in this once-in-a-lifeme experience. So when I got an email message last fall from Bishop Steve Talmage asking me to be the Gathering Synod Coordinator for our Grand Canyon Synod, I immediately said “yes!” I was happy to do this because I consider this one way in which I can use my gis and passion to serve the greater church.

I am also very excited about leading the youth of Living Water in this awesome adventure that Mark England describes as “A Lutheran Pilgrimage”. He says, “I would argue that the ELCA Youth Gathering is our opportunity for pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is often a journey made to a holy site such as Jerusalem or Rome. It’s just that our holy sites, the cities where we gather in the name of Jesus, are movable. When I think of the ELCA Youth Gathering as recovering the lost art of pilgrimage, then I can recognize that it’s not just about the destination, but it is the whole journey that is holy. In this way, the car washes, the sponsor banquets, and all of the planning become sacred parts of the pilgrimage and more than just a means to an end. Some may argue that Wittenberg is the proper destination for a Lutheran pilgrimage. For me, I’ll happily join all of the other Lutheran pilgrims in candy colored shirts finding our way to our domed stadium destination.”

I would like to propose that our pilgrimage starts this summer at Living Water, as we spread the word about this awesome experience to all youth who are currently going into 8th grade through 12th grade. Registraon opens September 15! Please see me if you (or someone you know) is interested in joining our group from Living Water.

Ask Zeke June 2017 – Bishop

Living Water’s 24/7 office fish confirms a change in synod leadership Q. I heard the Grand Canyon Synod will soon have a new bishop. When will this happen? A. In fish parlance, a local Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregation has landed itself a big one. The Rev. Stephen Talmage, who is currently Bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod, has accepted a call to serve a church in Mesa. The process of replacing him will unfold in two stages: the appointment of an interim bishop this summer and the election of a new bishop at next year’s Synod Assembly. Bishop Talmage’s resignation is due to his upcoming return to parish ministry. In March, the members of Love of Christ Lutheran Church, a sizeable congregation in Mesa, voted to extend a call to him to serve as their next Senior Pastor. As Bishop Talmage wrote in Grand Canyon Synod’s monthly E-News in March, “After a period of prayer and discernment, I am accepting this new call and will be resigning my call as bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod effective July 31, 2017.” Each of the 65 synods within the ELCA elects a bishop to oversee synod administration and staff. The Rev. Talmage was elected to a six-year term during the Grand Canyon Synod Assembly in May 2006 and re-elected to a second six-year term in 2012. His duties include overseeing approximately 95 ELCA congregations located primarily in Arizona and also in four Nevada counties and St. George, Utah. Bishop Talmage has been involved in various aspects of Living Water's pastoral call process. You may remember seeing him here when he installed Pastor Mark in March 2014 and again when he presided over Pastor Shari’s installation a couple months ago. ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton is appointing The Rev. Dr. Lowell Almen, a former ELCA Secretary, to serve as our Interim Bishop. A new synod bishop will be elected at the 2018 Synod Assembly. Do you have a question for Zeke? E-mail it to him at [email protected] or contact his writing partner, Jill Wehr, at 480-515-4813.

Help us support this year’s VBS Children's Book Drive! For the second year, our VBS Mission Project is once again a book drive to help improve literacy in the Phoenix core area. Books for elementary aged kids are our focus during VBS but we always accept any book donations. Books should be new or gently used (meaning no rips, tears, writing or worm holes!) Last year, we collected more than 650 books during this drive. Can we do it again?

Through our church's relationship with the Assistance League of Phoenix, these books find their way to several different agencies in our community, including K-8 students in Title I schools where 90% of the children quality for free and reduced lunches, ICM (Interfaith Cooperative Ministries) Food & Clothing Bank and UMOM New Day Center.

Bring your new or gently used books to the church through June 25th. Watch for the special display area as VBS begins to take shape! Help us support our VBS kids mission project and share the importance of a book in the hands of a child. Questions? Contact Sue Brash [email protected] or Myrna Ulland [email protected]

LW

LED Project – Fundraising UpdateThank you so much to those who generously gave to the LED Project! As you may know, the LED Project involves the replacement of our previous lights with energy-saving LED lights in every LWLC lighting fixture both inside and out. APS has estimated that the LED lights will save our church $4,800 per year in energy cost. The total cost of the project is $15,000. The amount raised through April is $10,495, which leaves the remaining balance to be raised as $4,505. If you feel led to contribute to this project, you can make a donation online, by text, cash, or by check with a notation that the contribution is for the LED Project. Every contribution is helpful regardless of amount. Again, thank you so much to those who have contributed to this project. Not only does this improvement help our environment by saving over 54,000 kwh per year of energy usage, but it also will pay for itself in approximately three years through the financial savings.

SUMMER STEWARDSHIP1 Peter 4:10 (NIV) — Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

Heading out of town to avoid the Arizona heat for the summer? We will miss you. Our fall and winter weather is great, but those hot summer days can be tough! Yes, it's a “dry heat” but so is an oven! Nevertheless, your church home here at Living Water keeps its doors open year round. You know what that means, too, don't you? The air-conditioning bills continue to arrive each month. We host our annual Vacation Bible School and worship – while reduced to one service – continues, too.

The same can be said for your summer church home! They keep their doors open for those who stay throughout the year. It has been suggested, that setting up a monthly auto-pay plan with both your home church and your “home away from home” church to automatically make your tithe/oering to both churches each month would help both churches even out the peaks and valleys between expenses and income that occur in those months when you are not there. Most churches make it easy to set up. At Living Water, you can talk to Lee Stenehjem or Lori Clark and they will be glad to walk you through the process.

Its a win-win. Both churches receive the funds you intended for them to receive and you save some time (which can then be devoted to other church-related activities )and voila! You have increased your stewardship giving because you increased the time you give to the church!

If you are going away for the summer, have a safe and enjoyable one, and we look forward to seeing you next fall!

Thank you for your continuing support of Living Water and its ministries!

ONLINE GIVING & TEXT GIVING

Every summer, we have faithful and generous members who diligently mail their contribuons from their summer home or vacaon desnaon to the church to support our ministry during the summer months. To assist and simplify the giving process, we have installed online & text giving soware. Online and text giving plaorms allow LWLC supporters to give wherever they are naonally within minutes…no envelope, check, or postage is needed. So, how does one access online & text giving? We have three ways…

1. From a computer, one can simply click the “Online Giving” link on the LWLC website at www.lwlcaz.org.

2. From a smart phone, you can access the LWLC website and use the “Online Giving” link as in #1 above. Or, if you use an iPhone, you can download the “Give+” app. To obtain the “Give+” app, go to the Apple App. store and search for “Vanco Give”. You will see the following opon for “Give+” appear.

Click “Open” to download it. Aer downloading the app, open the app. The prompts for informaon will guide you through the giving process easily.

3. From a mobile phone, text your donaon to 480-568-1120, which is the text giving number assigned to LWLC. (Text a dollar amount and the name of the fund to which you would like to donate. Ex: $100 General Fund; If you haven’t used the text giving before, a link will be texted to you to enter your name, address, and payment info. Once you have entered all info., you will receive a texted and emailed confirmaon of your contribuon to LWLC. Please note that aer the inial profile is set up for text giving, you will not have to do that again. The system will recognize your phone number and give credit to you.)

How safe is using the online giving and text giving soware? The soware that we use complies with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of regulaons established by the credit card industry that apply to companies of any size that accept credit card payments. (In order for a merchant of any size to process credit card payments, they must adhere to these standards.)

If you have any quesons or if you need assistance, please see Lori Clark in the office or contact her at 480-473-8400 or at [email protected]. She will be glad to assist you.

MEMORIAL COLUMBARIUM The columbarium of Living Water Lutheran Church (9201 E. Happy Valley Rd, Scottsdale, AZ) is a memorial garden designed as a resng place for the ashes of deceased members and their families. A columbarium is a permanent structure with niches or compartments designed to hold the urns containing the ashes of loved ones. Our columbarium is located on the far south end of our campus.

Our columbarium allows our members and their families the opportunity to have their final resng place within the shadow of the Church that has been a central part of their lives. This sacred site of beauty and dignity is a place where loved ones can visit and meditate.

The columbarium eliminates the pressures of choosing a burial site, casket, vault, and monument. Planning the inurnment and memorial service will be much simpler since it can all be done at the Church. The cost of cremaon and a niche in the columbarium are significantly less than the cost of a casket, burial site, and marker. This area emanates dignity and peace among the beauful Arizona desert landscape in which it resides. The design reflects the dignity, beauty, and tranquility appropriate for the resng place for those who have died.

It fulfills the Church’s mission to oversee the spiritual life of its congregaon from bapsm through life to death. These facilies are not intended to compete with commercial cemeteries, but are for the convenience of the Church members, ministers and immediate families.

HOW DOES IT WORK? You purchase a columbarium niche from the Church. You can place up to two urns in each niche. Upon purchase, the granite faceplate will be engraved showing the first name, middle name, family name, and date of birth. As soon as possible aer inurnment, the date of death will be added to the faceplate. The Church provides the urn, faceplate, and engraving. The Church will maintain your niche and its surroundings. Your family and friends will be comforted by your final resng place.

PURCHASING A NICHE A copy of the applicaon, niche inscripon order form with purchase price of a niche, and the rules and policies of the columbarium are all available from the Church office. Once the applicaon is approved, a cerficate covering inurnment ownership rights will be sent to the purchaser. If you purchase a niche and decide not to use it, the Church will repurchase the niche for the original selling price only. Once the niche has been used, no refund will be made. A niche cannot be sold or transferred and may only be used by those listed on the original purchase. The purchase of a niche includes the urns, the plaques inscribed with name and dates of birth and death, the opening and closing of the niche for inurnment, and perpetual care. Each niche is designed to hold two urns. Niche assignments are allocated in accordance with the desires of each applicant on a first-come, first-serve basis.
