PRES IDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome

our 70-member Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus celebrates its fifteenth season as the premiere gay men’s chorus in the Coachella Valley. since 2012 we have doubled our membership, expanded our audience, improved our financial stability and increased our musical quality. our priorities are to move forward by looking back at our very significant past, taking the best practices of those who organized this group, and presenting a new, unified, unique and diverse face to the Palm springs community. internally, we have addressed the need to diversify our fifteen member board of directors. our board is comprised of 7 singing members and 8 non-singing members. each of our board members chairs and supports a working committee. these hard working and dedicated volunteers donate countless hours to ensure that our concerts and membership functions are supported. We’re fortunate to have Doug Wilson as our artistic Director. Doug is a graduate of Michigan state University with a degree in Choral Music, and a Masters in Music Performance (organ) from arizona state University. He is a retired elementary school principal and educator from the Clark County school District in Las Vegas, nevada. He is an accomplished bell ringer and church organist and is active in musical theater in the Coachella Valley. special thanks to Vance Reger who is our assistant artistic Director. His musical talents are greatly appreciated for assisting in making this production a reality. our accompanist Joel Baker hails from seattle. Joel has been in the desert since 2003. He is a graduate from the University of Washington

school of Music and started his career as a pianist for nordstrom in seattle. Currently he is the principal accompanist for the vocal department at College of the Desert. “in season” a special ensemble of the chorus under the direction of Mark Duebner, will be making its second appearance this concert season. Kudos to Mark for his vision and direction of this ensemble. the members of in season have performed all over the Coachella Valley since January and are available for special functions. We would like to thank them for their commitment and dedication in representing the Palm spring Gay Men’s Chorus. Kurt Jordan is the accompanist for in season and a graduate of azusa Pacific University with a Ba in Music theory and Composition. We are excited to be celebrating our 15th musical season as a chorus. i cordially invite you to help us share our music by becoming a chorus sponsor. We have scheduled our main fund raising event on May 17, 2014, at the Hard Rock Hotel. it features emmy award winner Leslie Jordan as our main headliner entertainment. He is best known for his role of Karen’s pretentious, sexually ambiguous rival Beverley Leslie on the hit series Will & Grace. We look forward to seeing you at our May 17th event. now...sit back and get ready to enjoy optimistic Voices.

BIOGRAPHIES

the Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus is celebrating 15 years of making music. the concert you are about to hear is a very different presentation for the chorus. Using various musical arrangements, we will tell the story of the Gay Pride movement beginning with stonewall and continuing through Marriage equality and “it Gets Better”. there will be no spoken words from the director or chorus members. our music and visuals will tell the story.

the chorus begins with “We Kiss in a shadow”, from the musical “the King and i”, singing of how gay men and women had to live their lives before 1969. on June 27, 1969, the change began. Police, who often raided bars where gay men and women gathered, found a group at the stonewall inn that was ready to fight back (“stonewall serenade”). the chorus recognizes the drag queens that were part of that uprising in “Drag Queens in the sky”. Following stonewall riots, gay men and women began to join together in a long struggle for equality (“Do You Hear the People sing”).

the optimistic voices of many encouraged gays to show their “true Colors” as sung by the in season. Many men found support in gay communities such as san Francisco and wrote home to let mom and dad know they were gay (“Michael’s Letter to Mama”). there were no gay role models for men, so everyone had their own definition. special guest, terry Huber, tells us “i am the Very Model of a Modern Homosexual”. on the one year anniversary of the stonewall Uprising, the first Gay Pride Parade was held in new York City. PsGMC shares the excitement and fun of Pride Parades across the country, in “Parade”.

the excitement and joy of the gay pride movement was to be shocked and scared by a new challenge, aiDs. We lost the excitement of our rainbows, “somewhat over the Rainbow”. Many lost their lives before the medical community and government began to look for treatment. the Palm springs Gay Men’s Chorus remembers those who lost the battle with aiDs through the beautiful, “Gabriel’s oboe” from the movie “the Mission”. the world continues to fight the battle of HiV/aiDs and we celebrate the progress in “one Voice”. it has been a great journey from stonewall and we celebrate with “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah”.

state after state has tried to regulate human nature and the chorus presents a fun look at this legislation in “Color out of Colorado”. the second half of the program looks at more recent developments in the history of gay pride including “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” legislation. the chorus salutes all men and women that have served the country in “a tribute to the armed services”. Please stand and be recognized when we sing the hymn from your branch of the armed services. We sing of our love for our country in “Homeland”. Marriage equality is moving quickly through the states. in season sings of “Going to the Chapel” and “Me and My Baby” and the chorus reflects on “the Promise Lives on”. the men standing together for “the Promise Lives on” are couples who are able to show their love through marriage.

as Gay Pride makes strong statements for adults, it is young men and women that face the bullying and violence of their peers. the chorus offers words of encouragement to all in “testimony”, an anthem written by stephen schwartz for the “it Gets Better” Project. the chorus ends our historical journey with the acknowledgement that “i Know Where i’ve Been” and with our dream for the future, we know where we are going.
