The lab is the brainchild of the Siyaka Education Trust, the community and education invest- ment division of a group of property companies listed on the Johannes- burg Stock Exchange. In the past, the trust supported education by helping schools, one project at a time, but realised there is a need for more people of all ages to learn and grow. “We realised we haven’t even scratched the surface in learn- ing in terms of what we can do, and decided that malls in our property portfo- lio are perfect for state-of-the- art learning labs,” said Fortress chairman Jeff Zidel. The Siyaka learning lab will offer free courses and training, space to learn and study and access to technology. “The think-tank is where all training takes place in among other things - Inter- net courses and soft-skills training. Courses are presented by guest experts and qualified trainers. Booked classes will be advertised well in advance,” Keziah Venter, Siyakha Education Trust COO said. The trust will also be doing curricu- lum-supported-based training, by importing learning material and pre- senting it to pupils. While this preloaded plans to integrate surrounding areas and will embark on road shows to show how the lab can have a ripple effect on the community. “The learning lab is there for support and has to be the answer to the Amanzimtoti question and will adapt as necessary,” she added. Nomali Magwaza, representing Um- lazi District Department of Basic Educa- tion said it is great to be part of such a good initiative for surrounding schools and addressing social inequalities. She thanked Galleria Mall general manager Kurt Hoggan for welcoming them. “We are delighted and will assist and support Keziah and her team as far as we can. It will increase education levels in our province and we, as teachers, will benefit as well. We will also bring our staff to do computer learning,” said Magwaza. New child car-seatregulation welcomed>> Disregarding the new law will result in the driver being fined

KALISHA NAICKER

ER24 welcomes the new regula-tion of theNational RoadTrafficAct that aims toprotect children

with the use of a child car seat. Theregulationwillbecomecompulsory forchildren up until the age of three andwill come into effect from 1 May.

Motorists who have unrestrainedchildren three and under in theirvehicle will be fined.

However, some motorists refuse totake seriously the warnings and callsbyemergencyservicesandauthoritiestohavechildrenproperlyrestrained ina vehicle.

Every day one sees young childrenjumping on back seat, hanging out ofwindows and sitting on passengers’laps.Speaking toparents sometell youthat they never grew upwith child carseats and survived to tell the tale.

Parents also say their children donot likebeingrestrainedandcry if theyare restrained. Some parents insistyou not tell themwhat to dowith theirchildren.

Times have changed however, asthenumberof vehicles on the roadhasincreaseddrastically.Withthenumberof cars, buses, bikes and other modesof transport we are surrounded byevery day and the number of distrac-tions on the road, there is no saferoption but to have your child re-strained.

If your child does not like beingrestrained take responsibility andmake themunderstand that it isnotupfor discussion. The sad truth is thatER24 and other emergency servicesattend to horrific collisions involvingchildren every week.

In many collisions, the majority ofunrestrained children are flung out ofthe vehicle and either sustain criticalinjuriesordie.Forparentswhocannotafford car seats, remember that thereare organisations that sell second-hand car seats or give them out for anaffordable donation. While the lawforcesparents touse child car seats for

children under the age of three, thisdoes not mean that adults shouldignore the need to restrain olderchildren. Make sure they are re-strained appropriately. Rememberyoucannotundodeath.Thechoiceyoumake could be the difference betweenlife and death. Make sure your child isappropriately restrained.

Johannesburg.Reports from Mussina

indicate increased activity

ER24 offers the following advice forthe appropriate restraint for yourchild:

• Infants should ride rear-facing atleast until they are a year. Once theyexceed the weight or height limit setby the manufacturer of the infantsafety seat, they should continue toride rear-facing in a convertible safetyseat. It is best to keep toddlersrear-facing as long as possible.

• When they have outgrown theseat, they should use a forward-fac-ing safety seat with a full harness. This should be used until they exceedthe weight and/or height limit set bythe manufacturer of the seat.

• Children who have outgrown aconvertible safety seat should use abooster seat until they are at leastfour feet tall.

• Children who are tall enough towear an adult seat belt should stillride in the back until they are 13.Adjust the seat belt so the lap beltcrosses the child's upper thighs andthe diagonal belt crosses the upperchest at a point between the neckand shoulder.

ER24's emergency contact centrecan be reached 24 hours a day on084 124. - ER24.

Making theworld a better placeTANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

GREG-WELLS Clifton is thefounder of a communityorganisation called “Pay it

Forward SA”. It strives to make theworld a better place by mobilisingcommunities via Facebook to assistpeople in need.

“The whole of South Africa is ourcommunity. Two years ago we wereon 3 000 ‘likes’ and now we are on13 100. We are not a non-profitorganisationandcannotaskforfundsfrom government.

“Theconceptof theorganisationisbased on leads our organisation getsvia Facebook about people in need,”Clifton said.

“Because it is communityorganisation, it deals with anythingthat can go wrong in the family, missing persons, eviction, drugs, abuse or hunger.”

He is currently in Amanzimtotiassisting families to find missingpersons.

He said that Vicky Burger, reported missing in Fever recently, died inacaraccidentonherwayback

to Nelspruit. Her parents finallydiscovered that her body was at amorgue inStangerandcamethroughto identify the body last week.

Also recently reported missing,Nico Ball has unfortunately passedaway.

Clifton says it is imperative toreport missing persons to the police.

“Some say the SAPS will notphysically conduct a search. I agree, and itwouldbe foolish toexpect themtobe inapositionwitheveryreportedmatter to do. Of course, when itinvolvesaminor theirphysicalactionis more visibly present. Children donot often decide for themselves todisappear.Ispeakhereoftheyoungerset, not teenagers,” he said.

“Having said that, not all teenswhogomissingdo soout of their owneither. To the importanceof reportingany missing person, I say ‘yes’irrespectiveof theaforementioned. The police, once an inquiry hasbeen opened, are able to makethe information availablecountrywide. That in itself is aplus.”

Clifton said that a largepercentage of cases, need for

food, furniture, missing persons, etc, comes from Amanzimtoti and he issubsequentlyrentingaflat in theareato assist.

“Sadly inAmanzimtotipeople won’t getinvolved. They areoften prepared todonatemoney, but donot want to getinvolved. We workon the basis that theperson who is in thearea assists anotherperson in thearea. In

this way people can see where theirmoney is goingand it reduces costs tothe organisation.

“I would like to call on thecommunity to join our Facebookpage, if there is a post that grabs youand you can assist with, then do it. Iwill give you the person’s address. You thensendusaslipandwriteyourname on it to say it was done,” headded.

Clifton said they will infiltrate thistown as far as they need to help thesituation. The fact that they assistwith food does not however, mean

theygooutwitha“feedofsustain-ing themselves.

“There is no pride inbegging.”

Hosting a pet-food fundraiserTANIA SANDBERG>> [email protected]

ESTATE agency Re/Max’s staff and agentshosted a fundraiser to donate pet food forthe SPCA and 4 Paws and a Tale anddonated 82 bags of eight-kilogram bags ofdog food, 16 bags of two-kilogram cat foodand 59 tins of pet food to bothorganisations.

“Re/Max staff and agents have anAmanzimtoti community fund and part oftheir commission is donated to this fund.We collected R6 500 through the fund andwent to Pick n Pay in Athlone Park. Theywere absolutely amazing and gave us amassive discount. We bought most of thepet food there and also had pet food

donations,” said Re/Max’s CatherineSalbemini.

Salbemini says the estate agency usesthe community fund for worthy causesthroughout the year.

“There are so many homeless animalsthat need feeding. This donation is mostappreciated and means we can use ourfunds to build more kennels to house morepets for longer and cover veterinary bills,”SPCA PR Michelle Hannan said.

Jacqueline Crossley Smith of 4 Pawsand a Tale Rescue said that the food willgo a long way in supporting their feedingprogramme in rural areas.

“We feed about 100 animals a day.Because we don’t have kennels, we put theanimals with foster families until we finda home for them and we have to supplyfood for them during that time. We alsohave many feeding stations spread overthe rural area and grateful for thiscontribution,” said Crossley Smith.

Putting pet safety into practiceTANIA SANDBERG

FIREWORKS Action CampaignToti (Fact) launched a campaignto ensure the safety of pets andtheir owners recently.

The idea behind theinternational yellow ribbon “Givethem Space” campaign is to

support sensitive dogs in everydaylife among people and animals.

To participate, one simply tiesa yellow ribbon or bandana onthe leash or dog, to signal thatyour dog needs space or time toget out of the way of people andanimals.

“There are many reasons to

need more space and it may befor a shorter or longer period oftime in the dog’s lives. They maybe ill, hurt or maybe just old.

“They may have a new familyor bad life experiences and needsome space to slowly train to copewith their new surroundings.Another dog may be ‘in training’,Fact chairman, Lee Lewis said.

The campaign has beenendorsed by dog-training groupsand the SPCA and Fact will bepublishing information about thecampaign for release at theHighlands Gathering.

“The campaign banner willalso be displayed at local shopsand veterinarians to spread theword.

More information about thecampaign can be found onwww.yellowdog.se The sitementions that dog owners alsoneed to have knowledge about thecountry's laws on dog ownership.Among other things, you arealways responsible for your dog'sactions, with or without the yellowsign, whether people know aboutthe meaning of the yellow sign ornot.

“A big problem in our town isthat people are letting their dogsoff their leashes in public areas,”said Fact committee member,Zeele Pauw.

Pet owners need to takenote that according to ouranimal by-laws generalprohibitions 4, number 2, “theowner of any dog which isfound in any street or public areaotherwise than on a leash held bya person or under some other formof bodily restraint, shall be guiltyof an offence”.

Xenophobia president’ssilence deafeningIT seems that foreigners entering

South Africa are in for hard anddangerous times. Accusations

levelled against foreigners are thattheyaretakingthelimitedjobsavail-able and are associated with therampantcrimegrippingthecountry.

There is always speculationaboutNigeriansbeingkeyplayers inthe drug trade which is destroyingthe youth. However, these are mereallegations that have not been con-clusively investigated and verified.

Distinct attributes of the peoplewho enter the country empty-hand-ed to make a living in SA are theirentrepreneurial acumen and adetermination to make a success oftheir lives.

The Bangladeshis and Soma-lians, who have opened businessesin the townships, have done menial

jobs, accumulated some capital andstarted small spaza shops. They didnot takeanybody’s jobor steal. Theyused their imagination and creativi-ty to become successful.

This is the fundamental ideologyunderpinning the free-marketeconomy in this country.

Whattheydohaveisanunwaver-ing commitment to extricate them-selves from their poor circumstan-ces and improve their quality of life. This must be a lesson for everyperson to emulate. This level ofentrepreneurial thinking and questfor self-sufficiency can be placedsquarelyat theeducation systems inthese foreign countries whereemphasis isplacedonthecreationofsmall businesses with the effect ofgrowing the economy.

The recent attacks on foreigners,

which led to the deaths of fourpeople, with many being injured ordisplaced, is in danger of spirallingout of control. Looting foreign-owned shops and murdering for-eigners isnot theanswerwhendeal-ing with this issue. The challenge ismuch more complex and multifaceted. Home Affairs MinisterMalusi Gigaba, together with ahigh-powered government delega-tion, must deal with the issues ofxenophobia immediately. JacobZuma’s silence is obviously deafen-ing.

These attacks have to be avertedat all costs. If left unchecked, theycould reach similar proportions asthe Rwandan genocide thatoccurred in 1994.

Let us live in peace with each otherI AM saddened by the way South Africans are behav-ing. I just feel that this is going to be an eye for aneye and innocent people are going to die becauseAfrican countries are now going to be at warunnecessarily.

We had the greatest leader in the world (NelsonMandela) who gave 27 years of his life so that wecould be united as one nation.

Today he turns in his grave because his sacrificewill not be worth it as the very people he set free are

now turning on those who have come to seek a betterlife for their families. They are people who ran awayfrom oppression in their own countries.

Imagine if South Africans were not able to travelto neighbouring states if the xenophobia wasreversed.

Let us continue Madiba’s legacy and live in peacewith each other.

ZILLAH FRANCISVia email

IT is time to become realistic. The country is in a messand wanton spending by irresponsible officials, whom are not qualified to perform their duties, hasbecome a huge problem.

An excellent example is the R1,2 million spent ona Christmas party which clearly does not fall underthe scope of what rate payers hard earned funds areto be spent on.

We all pay rates, but what is it that we are payingfor? We pay for all services except for the totalmismanagement of the funds which is included in ourrates bill.

We have requested the qualifications of all munic-ipal staff. Apparently most do not qualify for thestandards required.

No question, BEE is the single most importantfactor behind this shocking mess.

It istimeforallpeopletostandtogetherasenoughis enough.

Eskom is in financial dire straits caused by munici-palities’ non-payment of funds.

It is time Eskom took over and the public dealtdirectly with Eskom. Eskom could charge municipali-ties more and the people might pay less so it is awin-win situation.

Women wantmidlife-crisiscars too

IT turns out women are also susceptibleto buying midlife-crisis cars, at least ac-cording to a survey by Ipsos.

It’s a common theory that when aman reaches middle age he will rush tobuy the new car he’s had his eyes onyears.

A survey by global research specialistIpsos claims to show that women wantmidlife-crisis cars too.

The survey revealed that, on average, one in four respondents were likely to buya midlife-crisis car – 30% of men and21% of women.

The sexes differed, however, on thetype of vehicle they were likely to buy -top pick among men was a sports car(24%), among women an SUV (19%).

You might think of a red sports car asthe classic midlife car but according tothe survey 20% said that they wouldchoose a black vehicle; 19% opted for sil-ver or grey. Blue and red were tied on 17%,yellow was dead last with two percentof the vote.

The Ipsos survey also showed 29% ofmen were “feel good” about middle agebut only 22% of women.

Overall, respondents felt positiveabout later life, saying it was “a time forfresh opportunities and experiences”.

Robyn Farrell, 1st for Women Insur-ance executive head, said: “Reachingmiddle age should be a time of celebra-tion – you’re older but wiser and betterequipped to deal with all that life throwsat you.

“This is reflected in your insurancepremium,too,asonceyouhitthebigfive-oh you can usually benefit from lowerpremiums because you’re viewed as amore responsible driver due to theamount of driving experience you have.”

roads from 9am to 4pm and 8pm to 6amduring week days. There are, however, provisions for emergency service vehicles.

“This provision shall not apply in caseof emergencies, to the driver of a fire-fight-ing vehicle, a fire-fighting response vehicle,an emergency medical response vehicle, arescue vehicle or an ambulance, who drivessuch vehicle in the performance of his orher duties, a traffic officer or a personappointed in terms of the South AfricanPolice Service Act, 1995 (Act No 68 of1995), who drives a vehicle in the carryingout of his or her duties or any person drivinga vehicle while responding to a disaster ascontemplated in the Disaster Manage-ment Act, 2002 (Act No 57 of 2002).”

Transport department spokesperson,Ishmael Mnisi, states that the regulationsare in “draft form” and will have to be pre-sented to his party’s cabinet, discussed inParliament and will incorporate publicinput. He states that the departmenthopes to implement the proposedregulations by the end of 2015.
