The show pays tribute to Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, and to astronauts and their support teams at NASA. The “Battle Hymn of the Republic” will play with a special sequence of blue and gray shells to celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth. Additionally, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing. A fireworks display choreographed to the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey” will unfold with a sound clip from astronaut Neil Armstrong.
Rain date for the display is Sunday.
Annual reading of the Declaration of Independence performed by
historical reenactors portraying Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and
Benjamin Franklin. There also will be a presentation of colors by
the Continental Color Guard and a performance by the
U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Fife and Drum Corps.
ª Family activities continue from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. You can meet the
historical figures in the rotunda
and the presidential
conference rooms.

Reporting by April UmmingerGraphic by Laris Karklis and Laura Stanton
The Mall is the place to watch the fireworks this year. More locals are expected to venture downtown to view the recession-resistant display, and tourists, perhaps driven by Obama enthusiasm or a three-day weekend, are making the District their Independence Day destination. However, the Fourth of July on the Mall is more than a 17-minute celestial show. Bring the family in the morning and enjoy free concerts, paradesand exhibitions throughout the day and into the night.
