    System Overview 1-3

This syst em is designed to fully exploit th e potent ial of th e Alpha E V6 a nd

    EV67 chips by using a switch-based (or point-to-point) interconnect system.With a tr a ditiona l bus design, the processors, memory, a nd I/O modules shar e

th e bus. As the number of bus users increa ses, the tran sactions interfere w ith

one another, increasing latency and decreasing aggregat e bandwidth. With a

switch-based system, speed is maintained and little degradation in performance

    occurs a s the n umber of CP U s, memory, a nd I /O users increases.

The sw itched sy stem int erconn ect uses a set of complex microprocessor 21272

support chips that route the tr a ffic over mult iple pat hs. This chipset consists of

    one C-chip, two P-chips, and eight D-chips.

C-chip. Pr ovides the command interface from the CPU s and ma in memory. The C-chip a llow s each CP U t o do tra nsa ctions simulta neously.

D-chips. Pr ovide the dat a pa th for the CP Us, ma in memory, and I/O.

P-chips. P rovide the interfa ce to tw o independent 64-bit, 33 MHz P CIbuses.

    The chipset supports up t o four C P U s a nd up t o 32 Gbyt es of memory.

Int erleaving occurs w hen a t least tw o sibling or nonsibling memory a rra ys a re

    used.

Tw o 256-bit memory buses support four m emory a rra ys, yielding a maximu m

5.2 G bytes/sec system ban dw idth . Tra nsa ctions are ECC protected. U pon the

    System Overview 1-17

    Memory Architecture

Memory throughput in this system is maximized by the following features:

Tw o independent, w ide memory da ta buses

Very low m emory lat ency (120 ns) an d high ban dw idth w ith 12 ns clock

ECC memoryEa ch da ta bus is 256 bits w ide (32 byt es). The memory bus speed is 83 MH z.

    This y ields 2.6 G B /sec ban dw idth per bus (32 x 83 MH z = 2.6 GB /sec). The

ma ximum ba ndw idth is 5.2 GB /sec.

The swit ch interconnect design ta kes full a dva nt a ge of the capabilities of thetw o wide data buses. The 256 dat a bits are distributed equa lly over tw o

memory motherboard s (MMB s). Simulta neously, in a r ead opera tion, 128 bits

come from one MMB an d th e other 128 bits come from another MMB , to ma ke

one 256-bit rea d. Anoth er 256-bit rea d opera tion can occur a t t he sa me time on

the other independent dat a bus.

In ad dition, two a ddress buses per MMB (one for each a rra y) a llow

overla pping/pipelined accesses to maximize use of each da ta bus. When a ll

arrays are identical (same size and speed), the memory is interleaved; that is,

sequent ial blocks of memory a re distribut ed across all four a rra ys.

    Memory Options

Each memory option consists of a set of four 100 MHz, 200-pin industry-

sta nda rd DI MMs. The DIMMs ar e synchronous DRAMs. The Model 1 systemsupports up to four memory options (16 DIMMs), an d t he Model 2 system

supports up to eight options (32 DIMMs). Memory options are a vaila ble in th e

    following sizes:

    256 Mbytes (64 MB DIMMs)

    512 Mbyt es (128 MB D IMMs )

    1 Gby te (256 MB D IMMs)

    2 Gby tes (512 MB D IMMs)

Memory options ar e insta lled int o memory moth erboards (MMBs) located on th e

syst em motherboard (see Figure 17). There are four MMBs. The MMBs ha ve

either four or eight slots for insta lling D IMMs.

See Ch a pter 6 for memory configura tion.

    1.10.2 Remote Management Console (RMC)

The remote management console (RMC) provides a mechanism forremotely monitoring a system and manipulating it on a very low level. It also provides access to the repository for all error information in thesystem. This provides the operator, either remotely or locally, with the

The RMC can a lso detect alert conditions such a s overtempera tur e, fan fa ilure,

    2.1 Questions to Consider

Before troubleshooting any system problem, first check the sitemaintenance log for the systems service history.

B e sure to ask th e system man ager th e following questions:

Has the system been used and did it work correctly?

Ha ve chan ges to ha rdwa re or updat es to firmwa re or softw are been ma de toth e system recently? If so, a re the revision num bers compat ible for t he

system? (Refer t o the har dwa re an d opera ting system r elease notes.)

Wha t is th e current sta te of the system?

If th e operat ing system is down, but you a re able to access the SRMconsole, use th e console environmen t d iagn ostic tools, including th e OCPdisplay, power-up display, and SRM commands.

If you ar e una ble to access the SRM console, enter th e RMC CLI a ndissue commands to determine the har dw are sta tus. See Chapter 7.

If th e operat ing system ha s crashed a nd rebooted, th e CCAT (CompaqCrash Analysis Tool), the Compaq Analyze service tools (to interpret

error logs), th e SRM crashcomman d, operat ing system exercisers, andDE C VET can be used t o diagnose system problems.
