  • Located on the corner of Chrystie and Grand, the concept of the library focused primarily on the importance of the books. The bookshelves are the primary structure, followed by floors that are a secondary, lighter material of which are directly attached to the concrete bookshelf structure.

The bookshelves are continuous throughout the whole building and come out of the roof. The circulation is located between and also attached to the bookshelves. Since floors are lightly attached, many spaces are small and private study lounges. Both roof tops are open for public and potential event spaces, etc.

  • PRATT DORMITORY - FALL 2010

The Pratt Dormitory, a two-person proposal, is located in Cooper Square. After studying the site and surroundings, the concept for our dorm is based on the anthropological term coevalness, used to describe the realization of modern and primitive societies existing at the same time. The goal was to have students be in touch with their surroundings by designing their dorm rooms to be angled toward important areas of the city, forcing awareness of their coexistance.

The dorm program included a farmers market on the second floor in order to include the community into the building. The green roof was run by both students who lived in the dorm and volunteers from the area, similar to how plots in public gardens work. We also considered several environmental materials for construction, including eco-cement and a recycled metal paneling system.

  • DIA RED HOOK - SPRING 2011

    TIME, DOMINANCE, AND THE VOID

The concept for the Dia Red Hook Museum was based on the three terms above, along with: sequence, hierarchy, space between, memory, force, and invasion. The idea was that the museum was built in phases over time, with certain programs and materials being able to take over or cut out part of the existing fabric, inspired by the planning of the street grid of Rome.

The required program included temporary and permanent galleries, library, bookstore, and auditorium. The phases were based strategically on the program, and each had a specific building material that was used during the design of that particular space.

The focus of this studio was not only about the program, which was to design Educational Satellites in rural Barranquilla, Colombia, but also designing with polyurethane, a plastic material that became structural by applying heat. The idea was to use this material in its most advantageous way in order to replace or use less of a more expensive or more difficult one. Each design team had to choose their own site and propose their own manifesto. After further researching the needs of the people of Barran-quilla, my partner and I decided to place our project on one of the most important things of the development of the city, the Magdalena River, in which we set our educational principles around ecological awareness, communication and health, using the site and river as a direct learning tool.

Another challenge of this studio was to design simple enough to build a one to one prototype in house. The structure was a sim-ple concrete pier, steel tube with a bamboo rod placed within. Using only three angles allowed more control of the design yet spaces were still flexible.

RESILIENT GOWANUS - THESIS PROPOSAL - IN PROGRESS

The focus of the thesis proposal, a three-person project, is primarily about resilience: reviving industry, cleaning toxicity, and most recently due to the Hurrican Sandy is flood control and disaster relief. After an extensive semester of research, we decided one of the main goals was to keep the unique character of Gowanus and try to prevent the possibility of gentrification. Using this principle, toxicity became the focus - how could we turn this negative into a positive aspect for the area?

A way to resolve some of the problems we have found was to add remediation strategies with the reintroduction of wetlands. By extending the canal strategicly, this can provide more area for flood protection and additional program - community event spaces and public gathering areas, outdoor artist exhibits for the local artists, and completely new to the area: research centers that will test the latest technology dealing with energy conversion, composting, and remediation strategies.

We are hoping that Gowanus will be self-sufficient (energy and industry wise), with CSOs that are controlled and a canal that is enjoyed by the artist community, a new science community, and those living in sur-rounding neighborhoods and beyond.
