humble, loyal to his country and people
Military Career

• Aided in:–Revolutionary War–French & Indian War
Presidency• Elected 1789• Appointed first Presidential Cabinet• Designated the location for the nation’s capital• Refused a third term
Rules of Civility• Made by age 16• Based on rules by French Jesuits in
1595• Rules Washington lived by• 110 different rules
• 3- “Show Nothing to your Friend that may affright him.”
• 7- “Put not off your Cloths in the presence of Others, nor go out your Chamber half Dressed.”
• 24- “Do not laugh too loud or too much at any Public Spectacle.”
• 43- “Do not express Joy before one sick or in pain for that contrary Passion will aggravate his Misery.”
• 44- “When a man does all he can though it Succeeds not well blame not him that did it.”
• 16- “Do not Puff up the Cheeks, Loll not out the tongue rub the Hands, or beard, thrust out the lips, or bite them or keep the Lips too open or too Close.”

Background of the Address• Prepared a Farewell Address after first term– Later revisited with Alexander Hamilton
• Written because he understood that citizens were concerned about him leaving– Assured them that he was no longer necessary – Said it was as a result of their support and efforts to
help the country survive and prosper• Published September 19, 1796• Included four warnings; greatest threats to
nation• Still referenced today
The Four Warnings
#1. Alliances and Foreign Entanglements
Making permanent alliances and getting involved in foreign entanglements will lead to conflict within the global nations.
“It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world...”

#2. Unity in the Government
Do not make political parties because it will create division and disunity within the society
“The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you, it is justify so, for it is A main pillar in the edifice of your real independence, the support of your tranquility at home, your peace abroad, of your safety; of that very liberty which you so highly prize”

#3. National Debt
Avoid debt at all times because it will lead to economical issues and conflict with other countries
"...Cherish public credit. One method of preserving it is to use it as sparingly as possible...Avoiding likewise the accumulation of debt....It is essential that you...Bear in mind, that towards the payments of debts there must be revenue, that to have revenue there must be taxes; that no taxes can be devised, which are not...Inconvenient and unpleasant...“ ~Farewell Address. #4. Maintaining the Constitution
Keep the Constitution in high authority and if changes are necessary, make them only in amendments

The Legacy of the Address
• Read at the Senate every year• His warnings have turned into our
reality–US in massive debt–Foreign affairs –Political parties caused great division
• US abided by a single warning –Constitution is changed only through
amendments
Overview of Address• Written to assure American people that he
was not needed a third term• Expressed the excitement he had about
joining his fellow Americans as a private citizen in the free government they have created together during his forty five years of public service.
• Addressed his concerns for future America– Warned America about what he believed were the
greatest threats to the destruction of the nation
Biblical Prophecy
“Biblical prophecy is the prediction of future events based on the action, function, or faculty of a prophet”
In Washington’s Farewell Address, Washington warned the country of future events; all of the warnings that he addressed have happened.
