On World Environment Day, Aldar launched its green living initiative GREEN ME across all communities and business entities, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of paperless way of life.

As part of the GREEN ME initiative, children were invited to the Arts and Crafts session at Gardens Plaza on the 5th of June. The event aimed at inculcating a sense of environmental awareness among the children, encouraging them to bring old newspapers to recycle.

How to Go PaPerleSS at HomeWhy should you go paperless? The short answer, yes but it’s very difficult. With some diligence and flexibility to change your old ways, you can have a pretty big impact.

Consider the following tips:

1. Avoid using paper towels and napkins; opt for washable cloth towels and handkerchiefs. With the proliferation of clothes washers, washing them is no longer a chore.

2. Reduce or eliminate your newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Opt for digital versions and use online resources as much as possible. Besides saving trees, you’ll have less clutter and pay less. You also get the ability to search effortlessly and you can archive electronically if you need to save the information, at all.

3. Use your local public library. You can read books, magazines, and newspapers at no cost to you and leave them for other patrons’ use when you’re done.

4. Switch to paperless statements and bills. Most of utility providers and banks now offer the service for free.

5. Get a tablet pc. This is like a notebook except you can write directly on the screen with the attached stylus pen.

6. Pay your bills online. In most cases, it’s also free and has the added benefit of never missing a payment because your check got lost in the mail. You’ll also have a record of having made each payment in case something does go wrong.

7. Get yourself off mailing lists. Catalogues, sales circulars, and any number of other advertisements still clutter many mailboxes.

8. Begin archiving your current paper data:• Scan at a quality low enough so that the files aren’t

huge, but high enough so that your printout will be useful as a copy of the original document. Usually 300dpi is adequate unless you’re archiving photos. Use greyscale scanning to save even more memory.

• Do not save your documents in JPG format, because jpg’s lousy compression creates artifacts that may make your document unreadable and unusable. Use PNG compression for pixel-accurate scans.

• Use a database program that uses keywords to help you organize your scans. For every scan you add to your database, use keywords that mean something to you, like “house payment July 08” or “car insurance statement 20090201.” This will allow you to do a search of keywords to locate a document if you need it for something.

• Use your printer only when you “need” a paper copy of something. Some people, once they go “paperless,” end up printing everything out and having a hard copy anyway. Avoid this.

tHe Ball IS In YoUr coUrt

Now that you’ve read through some of the solutions, it’s time you use some of this arsenal for your own betterment.

meet & Greetal ZeIna

Al Zeina Community Management hosted the first Meet and Greet event on 14 June 2012 at the Al Zeina library. It’s a social community event where the residents can meet and get to know each other on a more personal level and also to introduce the community management team. 33 residents participated in this event. The community management team did a presentation to the residents on Aldar Estates’ scope of work, achievements and plan for Q3 & Q4, followed by questions and answers. Over all the response from the participants was very positive; many recommended having such social events more frequently. Residents were requested to fill up the Customer satisfaction survey forms which were made available at the venue.

QarQe’anmY commUnItY eVentS mY commUnItY eVentS

ALDAR played host to the local tradition of Qarqe’an in July 5, 2012 at Garden Plaza Community Hall, with children and families distributing and collecting sweets as part of the lead up to Ramadan. Kids could also take part in arts and craft sessions.

Qarqe’an is an annual tradition practiced in some Arabic Countries especially in Gulf Countries. Children grab their bags in the middle of mid Shaaban (the month prior Ramadan) and knock on the neighborhood doors singing traditional songs to get candies, sweets and nuts. The tradition has been cherished for hundreds of years. tradItIon

Children gather in small choir groups in front of a home and sing. The song is intended to call on Allah to bless the youngest child of the family, to keep him or her healthy so that the family will remain happy. The more they sing, the more nuts and sweets they receive. The Qarqe’an tradition is intended to spread love, happiness and affection among adults and children.

al ZeInalIFe GUardSWhile some people assume that a pool or beach lifeguard essentially shows up for work and does nothing except assist swimmers who are in distress, the fact is that lifeguard jobs involve a number of tasks. A primary focus of every lifeguard is the safety of every person using the facility during his or her shift. From this perspective, the lifeguard functions as the authority figure around the pool, making sure that the rules and regulations that apply to using the facilities are being observed by all the users. The lifeguard has the authority to eject anyone from the pool if their behaviour becomes unruly and is a threat to the safety of everyone else at the pool.

The pool lifeguard is also often called upon to teach basic pool safety not only for the kids but also for the grown ups.

This can involve everything from working with them to ensure they know how to use the floating / safety devices properly, reminding users and their guest to not run along the edges of the pool, etc... Al Zeina has a team of 10 certified life guards, well-trained in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) out of which 6 are assigned for the pools in every precinct, 3 for the beach and one is a reliever. They are on duty during the communal pool operating hours (10:00hrs to 22:00hrs) and beach operating hours from 08:00hrs to 20:00hrs.

BeacH VolleY BallWe are happy to announce that the beach volleyball net has been installed at Al Zeina beach front; opposite to Precinct B. We therefore urge and request you to co-operate and follow below instructions before using the system, for the benefit and convenience of everyone.

• Please gather your garbage in properly secured garbage bags and dispose of them down the chute.

• Boxes, cartons and metallic objects are not to be disposed in the chute as they will block and damage the system installed in the building.

Our aim is to ensure the safety and comfort of all our residents within the community. In the event that you have any concern or a cause for complaint about any activity or incident within the community, we encourage you to contact Aldar Customer Service.

car ParKInGIt has been noticed that some of the residents are not parking their vehicles in their designated parking areas causing a lot of inconvenience to the other residents. We would like to request everyone to refrain from parking their cars at the wrong parking spots; failure to do will result in towing or clamping of vehicles at the owner’s expense.

Please note that vehicles are parked at the owner’s risk and responsibility. The managing agent of the community shall not be held liablefor any loss or any damage of whatever nature which the owner or any person claiming through or under him, may suffer in consequence of his vehicle being parked in the car parking area. This junction helps tremendously with the access to and from the Yasmina, Sidra, Samra, Mariah and Muneera Communities as there is no longer the long drive to one of the roundabouts at Yasmina School and Al Raha International Schools when changing direction or trying to access Khalifa A.

Large, green clothing boxes have been located across all Aldar residential communities in May supplied by Gulf States Recycling (GSR).

GSR was created in response to the findings of a research into how people in the UAE dispose of their of unwanted clothing and shoes. The findings showed that 70% were throwing them into the garbage, 20% said they gave to charities and 10% gave it to family members or friends. The 70% who were throwing them into the garbage is a high percentage of unnecessary waste and in our mind is a sin because people in developing countries who cannot afford to buy new clothes and footwear can re-use these clothes. The results encourage developing this new recycling initiative in the UAE.

The clothing donation boxes will contribute to the support of philanthropic institutions such as Red Crescent, Dubai Women and Children Foundation.

Why Textile RecyclingTextile recycling has many environmental and economic benefits:

• It minimizes the need for many polluting and energy intensive processes that are used to make textiles from fresh materials.

• The requirement of landfill space is reduced. Textiles lead to many problems in landfill. Synthetic fibers don’t decompose. Woolen garments do decompose but produce methane, which contributes to global warming.

• Pressure on fresh resources will be reduced (through reducing the amount of raw materials needed to manufacture clothes).

• Reducing pollution and saving energy.• Demand is reduced for textile chemicals like dyes and

fixing agents.

BeneFItS oF teXtIle recYclInG

Ninety nine per cent of used clothes are recyclable; Recycling of textiles can give a new lease of life to old clothes, shoes, bed linings..

It not only reduces the amount of waste going into landfill but also creates much needed employment opportunities and re-use of these clothing in developing countries.

The creation of employment is through the sales of used clothing which is done in local markets, as this is a much needed products because the un affordability to buy new clothes.

The recovery of textile and clothing for recycling provides both environmental and economic benefits.• clothing & textile reduces the need for landfill space

Synthetic fiber products will not decompose in the landfill Woollen garments do decompose but they also produce methane which contributes to global warming

• clothing & textile recycling reduces pressure on virgin resourcesRecycled clothing does not require the use of new textile resources such as cotton or wool.

• clothing & textile recycling saves energy and reduces pollutionRecycling saves on energy consumption when processing

• clothes & textile recycling reduces the demand for dyes and fixing agentsThis in turn reduces the problems caused by their use and manufacture

SaFetY In tHe HomeEach year thousands of incidents occur at home, many of which cause serious injuries and even death to loved ones. More accidents happen at home than anywhere else particularly to children under 5 years and the elderly, 65+ years. The largest number of accidents occurs in the living/dining room; however, the most serious accidents happen in the kitchen and on the stairs. Health and Safety precautions are not just for the Workplace and generally cost nothing more than a few thoughts and actions. The following are some basic points which can be applied to ensure you and your loved ones stay safe and secure.

Safety Tips: do’s1. Do consider fitting child locks to windows so they wouldn’t

open more than 100mm. (If not already fitted)2. Do clean up spills quickly to minimize slippage and trips.3. Do use the correct tools, such as step ladders, when

changing light bulbs or working at a height. Always follow the manufacturers’ instructions.

4. Do fit smoke alarms, if not already fitted. Test them weekly.5. Do ensure young children are supervised at all times.6. Do ensure all medication, plant treatment products and

harmful cleaning products are kept out of the reach of children.

7. Do know where the nearest fire extinguisher is and read the instructions to ensure you know how to us it.

8. Do ensure gas appliances are regularly inspected by the service provider.

9. Do hold onto the hand rail when walking up and down stairs.

10. Do report all major defects in common areas to the onsite Management Team.

do not’s1. Do not place furniture and other items such as plant pots

immediately beside a balcony wall or edge. This stops children from climbing up to look over the hand rail.

2. Do not have trailing cables across the floor especially doorways.

3. Do not use electrical items with frayed cables or cracked plugs.

4. Do not make home-made modifications to electrical items unless you are a qualified and competent electrician.

5. Do not overload electrical sockets. Avoid using electrical adaptors.

6. Do not leave young children (e.g. under 6 yrs) unsupervised at the swimming pool even for the shortest of periods.

7. Do not leave candles burning unattended.8. Do not leave handles of cooking utensils overhanging from

the cooker.

StreSS relIeVerS

The easiest way to lift yourself up from a stressful and tiring routine is to do something that you truly enjoy. In this issue CONNECT brings you 4 easy ways to bust that stress away. Take a deep breath, relax and enjoy!

warm cup of tea: A research conducted in England shows that tea drinkers are likely to have lower levels of cortisol, also known as the ‘stress hormone’ which is involved in response to stress and anxiety. Relax your mind with a soothing cup of tea and tune yourself to a healthy and happy lifestyle.

taste of music: Wake yourself up with your favourite song and feel great about the day ahead of you. Music can be used in many ways to relieve stress and be a positive addition to your day to day activities. As a matter of fact, music therapy is a growing scientific research that uses music to improve emotional and social well-being.

Breath of nature: A closed environment can restrict yourself from feeling better even if you wanted to. Take a walk along the corniche or the park and connect with nature. A weekend trip to Hatta or the Hajar Mountains will take your mind off your stressful routine and guarantee a fresh start.

Great big laugh: When you feel good about yourself, remember to have a hearty laugh. This will help lower your blood pressure and immediately uplift your overall mindset. When you’re feeling down, a good funny movie is an absolute necessity to chase away the blues!

Staying hydrated is critical if you’re physically active in hot weather. But individuals have different hydration needs, so you need to assess your personal sweat rate, according to Brendon McDermott at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

“Sweat rate is very simple to calculate: weigh yourself before exercise, with as little clothing as possible; exercise for half an hour and don’t drink or use the bathroom for that half hour; weigh yourself again, wearing the same amount of clothing to see how much you’ve lost” he explained in a university news release.

If you’ve lost a pound, for example, that translates to about 16 ounces of fluid that you’ll need to replace. Sports organizations suggest dividing your total by four to see how much water you need to drink every fifteen minutes while exercising to replace your lost fluids.

When exercising in hot weather, you should be well-hydrated when you begin your exercise and fluids should be readily accessible during your activity. Don’t wait until you feel parched before you drink, because the thirst mechanism isn’t triggered until you’re two percent dehydrated, said McDermott, assistant professor, clinical coordinator for graduate athletic training program and co-director of the applied physiology laboratory.

Having cool fluids on hand may encourage you to drink during activity in hot weather. If you’re playing sports or exercising for longer than an hour, you may require sports drinks.

You can also monitor your hydration status by a tried-and-true method: checking the colour of your urine.

“It should have a light yellow tinge to it. lemonade is much better than apple juice. and if you’re delving into the ice tea realm, it’s time to drink” said McDermott, who noted that it’s normal to have darker urine in the morning.

After your activity, it’s important to rehydrate as soon as possible within 30 minutes, he advised.

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region (Al Gharbia) of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and the President of the Emirates Falconers’ Club, the 10th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Hunting & Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX 2012), will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Organized by the Emirates Falconers’ Club, the Exhibition will run from the 5th to the 8th of September.

ADIHEX is an annual event organized by Abu Dhabi. It has won a distinguished position and international recognition. The event succeeded as an artistic, heritage, environmental and cultural phenomenon that assimilates the economic aspect, which is necessary to ensure the continuity of any event regardless of the nobility of its aims. ADIHEX has gained a huge popularity in the whole region and has been characterized by the conclusion of major deals and the signing of large contracts. At the same time, ADIHEX has been aiming at raising awareness about the concept of sustainable hunting, which is one of the event’s major concerns. Organizers have been keen on promoting the event in a way that reflects Abu Dhabi’s eminent position on the international level.

On both the regional and international levels, ADIHEX has become a rare opportunity to promote sustainable hunting, and has turned into a forum for the advocates of environmental conservation, hunting enthusiasts, poets and artists. The unique standing enjoyed by falconry and equestrian in the Arabian Peninsula is no secret. These activities have become a symbol of the deep-rooted Arab civilization, which combines sports, courage, manhood, environmental conservation, compassion towards birds and animals, noble qualities and all the values that characterize Arabs since ancient times.

laYlat al QadrProphet Mohammad (PBUH) said Laylat Al Qadr occurs during the last ten days of Ramadan, but it is highly speculated that it is either on the 25th or 27th night of Ramadan.

What makes Laylat Al Qadr special is that it is supposed to be the night when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). This night also has an entire surah (chapter) dedicated to it in the Quran. The surah states Laylat Al Qadr is better than 1,000 months, which means the good deeds performed on this night are multiplied by 30,000 or it is as if such work had been performed over 82 years. On this night, angels descend to earth to register people’s deeds. It is reported that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said: “Whoever stays up [in prayer and remembrance of Allah] on the Night of Qadr, fully believing [in Allah’s promise of reward] and hoping to seek reward, he shall be forgiven for his past sins.”

ZaKat al FItrMuslims are also obligated to give poor people a set amount of money called ‘Zakat Al Fitr’, which is meant to be used to help those less fortunate buy food and new clothes so they too can enjoy the celebration. The head of the household may pay the required amount for the other members of the house.

Zakat Al Fitr is required of everyone who fasted, disregarding their age and social status. Paying Zakat Al Fitr becomes obligatory from sunset of the last day of Ramadan and remains obligatory until the beginning of Eid prayer. One can pay it before the last day of Ramadan. Not paying it is considered a sin. The set amount

ItIKaF During the last ten days of Ramadan, some men and women commit to itikaf (seclusion) in the mosque. They detach themselves from the materialistic world and dedicate all their time to get closer to Allah.

Itikaf can only be observed in a mosque and not in a prayer room in a house as it is not considered a mosque.

eId As Ramadan comes to a close, Muslims prepare for the joyous celebration that follows. It is Eid Al Fitr, which literally translates into ‘The Festival of Ending the Fast.’

Eid Al Fitr is a three-day celebration that follows Ramadan. Muslims wear their best clothes, prepare food and sweets and spend these days with their family and friends.

In Islamic countries Eid Al Fitr is a public holiday. Since Eid Al Fitr is the day of celebration of the end of the fast, it is preferable to eat before going to the Eid prayer.

al eId PraYerThe special Eid prayer is performed in the morning and is held in congregation in mosques or open areas. Eid prayers are not compulsory but are strongly recommended. One cannot perform Eid prayer at home, because it has to be prayed in congregations behind an imam (prayer leader).

Eid Prayer is different from the daily prayers that every Muslim is required to perform. The prayer is followed by a khutba (address), so one should not leave directly after prayer.

After the khutba is over, people get together to enjoy these blessed days in parks or at each other’s houses.

eId celeBratIonS Children are usually given gifts or cash during Eid, from both family and family friends. These are called ‘Eidiya’ and can range from as little as a few dirhams to as much as Dh1,000.

Mothers often send out their children to give the neighbors gifts, including homemade sweets and biscuits in the spirit of Eid.

During the last ten days of Ramadan, Muslims around the world seek to observe Laylat Al Qadr. Muslims also get ready for Eid Al Fitr.
