ALBERT F. KOGLIN ALBERTINA LANGE Albert F. Koglin was born in the Prussian province of Pomerania (German Pommern) in July 1856. 1,2 About the year 1880, Albert married Albertina Lange, who was born in October 1847, also in Pomerania. 3 There exist records of other people named Koglin in such Pomeranian towns as Grabow, Stargard, and Stettin, formerly the capital of Pomerania, 4 about the time Albert was born. Although Pomerania has since been divided up between Germany and Poland, it is certain that Albert and his wife were German and spoke German. The surname Koglin may have originally been pronounced more like “Koeglin” or even “Kochlien.” Albert had an older brother named August, 5 born March 1855. 6 About the time that Albert Koglin married Albertina Lange, August Koglin married Fredericka Lange. 7 (It may have been a case of two brothers marrying two sisters.) While Albert and Albertina spent the first years of married life in Pomerania, August and Fredericka left their homeland for the New World soon after they were wed. In late 1882, the young couple boarded the S.S. General Werder at the German coastal city of Bremen and made the long voyage to New York City, arriving on November 8 th . 8 From there, they traveled to the German settlement in the Waterloo region of Ontario, Canada, to make their home in Preston, formerly called Cambridge Mills. There were many industries about that time in Cambridge Mills settlement, including a foundry, a carriage manufacturer, a furniture company, potteries, and flour mills. August most likely found work in one of these. Life in Ontario must have been good enough to convince Albert and Albertina to immigrate also. In early 1884, they and their two young children, Herman and Bertha, sailed on the ship S.S. Donau also from Bremen, Germany, to New York City, arriving on April 18 th . 9 The S.S. Donau was a iron built steamer of 2896 gross tons, accommodating 60 first class and 700 third class passengers. A ship of the North German Lloyd Line, she made the run from Bremen to New York from October 1868 through January 1887. After they arrived in New York, Albert and Albertina also traveled to Ontario and must have settled close to brother August, for their next two children, Anna Maria and Elizabeth, were born in Preston, Ontario.11,12The two Koglin families lived in the Waterloo area until 1888, when both decided to immigrate again, this time across Lake Huron to the state of Michigan in the United States.13,14 It is not known exactly what prompted both families to leave Canada that year, but there were likely a couple reasons. First, in Ontario there was a move to establish English as the accepted language, and the School Act of 1890 made English

a compulsory subject of instruction in all public schools in Ontario. Even before 1890 though, there was a gradual assimilation to English, and this no doubt had an effect on the large German-speaking communities in Ontario. Since there was less of a reason to stay, many chose to move west. The other, more compelling reason that families moved to Michigan about then, in particular, to Huron County, had to do with the Great Fire of 1881. Up until that year, Huron County was covered with forests of hardwoods and evergreens. The county was home to numerous lumber camps and mills which processed millions of board-feet of lumber every year. In the summer of 1881, all that changed when 1500 square miles, from Saginaw to Port Huron, were consumed in an inferno lasting three to four days. Practically overnight, Huron County went from forest to farmland. In the years to follow, land sold there at remarkably low prices with realtors advertising acreage cleared by the fire for as little as $1.25 an acre. Cheap land, coupled with the advent of the railroad in 1882, encouraged many families to settle in Huron County,15 including many Germans who had first immigrated to Canada. When the Koglins moved to Huron County, Albert bought land on Parisville Road in Huron Township, about four to five miles west of the village of Port Hope. There he and Albertina had a small farm. Like many Germans in the area, they were Lutheran and attended St. John's Lutheran Church in Port Hope, where services used to be given in English and in German. Their children also had to make the trip to Port Hope to go to school.16

Albert and Albertina had twelve children in all, yet there never was a time when all twelve were alive since a middle daughter died in infancy. Albertina had children over a 22 year span, with her first children much older than her youngest; and so the remaining 11 children and parents lived together only briefly. Bertha, the oldest daughter, married just a few months after Otto, the youngest child, was born. Elizabeth, the next oldest daughter, married three years later. What separated the family most however was the death of so many of the children, the chief cause being tuberculosis. Besides the baby who died, a daughter died in her teens, and five children died in their twenties. Sadly, Albert and Albertina saw eight of their children 15 Huron County Historical Society, Images of America Huron County Michigan (Charleston, SC: Arcadia Publishing,

die before them. Just four sons—Herman, William, Gustav, and Otto—were blessed with a full life.Albert and Albertina Koglin themselves both lived long lives, always at their farm. When they were older, their son Gus and his family lived with them.17 Albertina Koglin died on March 17, 1932, at the age of 72. Her husband Albert lived nearly 14 more years, dying at the age of 89 on February 24, 1946.18 Both of them are buried in Marquardt Cemetery, a small, country graveyard off Moeller Road in Huron County, just a couple miles from their farm.19 Albert and Albertina had already buried several of their children there, and it's where many of the August Koglin family are also buried.

LaBelle, of Port Austin, MI, in November 1992, and transcribed by Judith Grigg, of Bad Axe, MI. The Koglin inscriptions match almost exactly a list of names and dates of all Koglin gravestones compiled by the author during a visit to the cemetery in August 2001. The only difference was that of the death year of Ida J. Koglin, which LaBelle had listed incorrectly as 1906 (Ida's death certificate was from 1908).

21 Albert Koglin household, 1900 U.S. Census, Huron Twp., Huron Co., MI, National Archives micropublication Series T623, Roll 715, p. 115. In 1900, Albertina stated that she had had 10 children, and 9 were still alive. The children in the household were Herman, Bertha, Annie, Lizzie, William, Wilhelmina, Ida, Lena, and Albert. Emily had already died in infancy.

In 1910, Albertina stated that she had had 12 children, and 8 were still alive. The children in the household were Herman, William, Minnie, Lena, Albert, Gustav, and Otto. Lizzie was married; the four children who had died were Bertha, Anna Maria, Ida, and Emily.

1. HERMAN A. C. KOGLIN was born January 13, 1882, in Pomerania, Prussia/Germany.23,24 He did not marry until he was past 30 and then to a young lady 14 years his junior. On April 27, 1914, in Port Hope, Huron County, Michigan, Herman married Ella E. Eggert,25 daughter of Gustave Rudolph and Ida Augusta (Schave) Eggert.26,27 Ella was born July 18, 1896, in Huron County.28 The couple made their home in Bloomfield Township, where Herman had a farm close to that of his parents.29,30 Their family included Elda, Ida, Alvin G. (1920-200731), Everine, Arginie,32 and possibly other children. Herman died in 1965 and Ella in May 1979.33 They are both buried in Marquardt Cemetery.34 An interesting note about Herman is that he was considered to be a Canadian citizen on his World War I draft card (in the third registration in September 1918, which included all U.S. males between the ages of 18 and 45). The card also described him as tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair.35 2. BERTHA KOGLIN was born December 16, 1883, in Prussia/Germany.36 On August 8, 1904, in Huron County, Michigan, she married Otto Henry Twardokus,37 son of John and Bertha (DeWitt) Twardokus,38,39 as 23 Albert Koglin household, 1900 U.S. Census, Huron Twp., Huron Co., MI, National Archives micropublication Series

his first wife. Otto was born January 23, 1881, probably also in Huron County.40 Tragically, Otto and Bertha's marriage lasted only three years. On July 13, 1907, Bertha died of miliary tuberculosis at the age of 23. She was buried in Marquardt Cemetery. Her death certificate states that she died in Bloomfield Township and that she had two living children,41 who were Alfred F. Twardokus (1905-196742) and Anna (Twardokus) Rankey.43 After their mother's death, Alfred and Anna went to live with their Koglin grandparents.44 Otto H. Twardokus eventually moved to Detroit, married as his second wife Milda Adler, and worked as a drill press hand for the Ford Motor Company.45,46 3. ANNA MARIA (ANNIE MARY) KOGLIN was born October 22, 1885, in Preston, Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately Annie Mary only lived until the age of 20. She died in Huron County, Michigan, on March 30, 1906, of phthisis pulmonalis and is buried in Marquardt Cemetery. At the time of her death, Annie Mary was working as a housemaid.474. ELIZABETH (LIZZIE) KOGLIN was born September 28, 1887, in Preston, Ontario, Canada.48 On June 26, 1907, she married William Plietz in Port Hope, Huron County.49 Born October 20, 1883, in Port Hope, William was the son of Albert and Amelia (Schubring) Plietz.50 William and Lizzie Plietz lived in Rubicon Township, Huron County, Michigan, where they had two girls, Agnes (Plietz) Meel (1909-193051) and Olga Plietz.52 Sadly, Lizzie (Koglin) Plietz must have died in the period 1920-1930 because by 1930, William had moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and was living there with a second wife, Florence. <http://familysearch.org/>.58 Ibid. The marriage record for William Koglin and Anna Smith states that she was the daughter of August Smith and (---)

Zick, also that Anna was born 1895 in Germany. Since she was from Germany, it is likely that the name Smith was either misheard or an Anglicization of Schmidt. In fact, there was an August C. and Amelia A. Schmidt who lived nearby in Bloomfield Twp. in Huron Co.

59 Aug. Schmidt household, 1910 U.S. Census, West Point Twp., Columbia Co., WI, National Archives micropublication Series T624, Roll 1705, p. 32. “Aug,” age 43, and his wife “Emelia,” age 39, Schmidt, both born in Germany, had five children. The two oldest girls were Anna, age 15, and Martha, age 13, both born in Germany. There were three other children, Albert, age 8, Maria, age 6, and Frieda, age 4. Judging from the birthplaces of their children, the family immigrated from Germany to Wisconsin about 1903.

60 August C. Schmidt household, 1920 U.S. Census, Bloomfield Twp., Huron Co., MI, National Archives micropublication Series T625, Roll 770, p. 43. In 1920, August was 53, his wife Amelia was 49, and their children at home were Mary L., age 16, Frieda M., age 12, and Henry L., age 10. This census listing shows that the August Schmidt family who were in Columbia Co., WI, in 1910, are in Huron Co., MI, in 1920.

This record states that Frieda, born 24 Oct. 1906 in West Point, Columbia Co., WI, was the daughter of August Karl Schmidt and Amelia Zick. It verifies that Amelia's maiden name was Zick.

Colfax Cemetery, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan.73Back in June 1917, when William Koglin filled out his World War I draft card, he noted that he was a farmer employed by his father, and that he was tall, had a medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair.746. WILHELMINA A. (MINNIE) KOGLIN was born October 5, 1891, in Huron County, Michigan. She was another of the Koglin children to die in her early twenties. Minnie Koglin died on February 7, 1915, of pulmonary tuberculosis. She is buried in Marquardt Cemetery,75 and her gravestone is written in German.767. IDA J. KOGLIN was born April 12, 1893, in Huron County, Michigan. Ida did not even reach her fifteenth birthday because she also died of pulmonary tuberculosis, on March 28, 1908. She is buried in Marquardt Cemetery,77 and her gravestone is also written in German.788. LENA J. KOGLIN was born in 189479 in Huron County, Michigan. On November 18, 1914, Lena married William F. Kessel in Port Hope.80 William was the son of Oswald Reinhold and Hilda (Doroh) Kessel, and he was born April 21, 1889, in Michigan.81,82 Again, as with all the daughters of this family, Lena did not live very long. At some time in 1916, Lena J. (Koglin) Kessel died, and she is buried in Marquardt Cemetery.83 She had no children.84 William F. Kessel married as his second wife, Martha M. Schmidt, on June 16, 1918, in Huron Township, Huron County, Michigan.85 Martha was the sister of Anna Schmidt, who married Lena's older brother William that same year. It happened that later, William and Martha (Schmidt) Kessel's son Arthur Kessel (1919-198786) married Leona J. Koglin, daughter of Otto Albert Koglin (#12 below). This created an unusual situation: though Arthur and Leona were not related, they had cousins in common, namely, the 73 William Koglin, Anna Koglin, Colfax Cemetery, Bad Axe, Huron Co., MI, USA, at FindaGrave, online

children of William and Anna (Schmidt) Koglin (#5 above).William F. Kessel died in 1954 and is also buried in Marquardt Cemetery, although his second wife Anna apparently is not.879. EMELIE (or Emily) KOGLIN was the only child of the Koglin family to die in infancy. She was born November 22, 1896, in Huron County,88 and died January 4, 1897, also in Huron County. Emily was the first to be buried in Marquardt Cemetery.8910. ALBERT FERDINAND KOGLIN was born July 2, 1898, in Huron Township, Huron County, Michigan.90,91 He probably never married because he did not live very long. At the beginning of the year 1920, Albert was 21 years old, still single, and still living with his parents on their farm.92 By the end of the year, he was dead and buried in Marquardt Cemetery.93 His gravestone reads “Albert F. Koglin, Jr.,” and it is the only source found to indicate that both father and son may have been named Albert Ferdinand Koglin. Albert's World War I draft card from 1918 tells us that he was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.94 11. GUSTAV G. KOGLIN was born May 29, 1901, in Huron Township, Huron County, Michigan.95 About the year 1927, he married a lady named Adeline J. (---) who was born July 3, 1902, in Michigan.96 Gustav and Adeline lived with his parents until the latter's deaths, and they were the ones who inherited the Koglin family farm on Parisville Road in Huron Township.97 They had at least one daughter, Arlene V. Koglin, and probably other children.98 Gustav died in March 198099 and Adeline in November 1985.100 Both are buried in Marquardt Cemetery.101

12. OTTO ALBERT KOGLIN was born April 12, 1904, in Huron County, Michigan.102,103 On November 28, 1926, he married Clara Matilda Carpenter,104 daughter of Perry and Minnie (Reid) Carpenter.105,106 Clara was born October 3, 1909, in Michigan.107 Otto and Clara had a farm on Tinsey Road in Huron Township, west of Port Hope.108 Their family eventually had the following six daughters and one son: Leona Jane (Koglin) Kessel (1927-2006109), Margaret Mary (Koglin) Fealko, Violet Tressa (Koglin) Paling (1933-2002110), Annabell Patricia (Koglin) Miller Rothe, Bettylou Isabelle (Koglin) Burkhard, Eugene Otto Koglin, and Rozella Clara (Koglin) Osantowski.111Otto Koglin died on January 31, 1983,112 in Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan. His wife Clara died on September 4, 1995, also in Bad Axe.113 They are buried together in Marquardt Cemetery,114 like most of the others of the Albert Koglin family.

SOME NOTES ON THE AUGUST KOGLIN FAMILY

When August and Fredericka Koglin settled in Huron County, they had a small farm in Bloomfield Township, a bit south of Albert and Albertina Koglin's farm. They had seven children in all, four of whom were born in Ontario, Carl Ernst Paul, Frederick, Mary, and an unnamed boy born in 1887.115 Only five of their children were alive as of 1900, but all five lived to adulthood.116,117 August Koglin died in 1930, and his wife Fredericka “Freda” Koglin died in 1938. Both are buried in Marquardt Cemetery, Huron Co., MI.118 Their five surviving children:102Otto Koglin, Social Security Death Index, RootsWeb.com, online <http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/>.103Gravestone inscriptions of Marquardt Cemetery, Huron Co., MI, RootsWeb.com, online
