March 31» 1980r|

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

How has the Lord Been blessing you? We sincerely pray thatyour blessings have been many; we cannot help but praise Him forHis goodness to us5

Did you notice our new heading? We have committed ourselvesto a new approach to the work in the Mbala area and are anxious tosee where the Lord will lead in the coming months and_years. Inthe coming months we have dedicated ourselves to working with the^ambiaii Christians--as partners in-the-evangel-ism-of their country, —and to encourage them to do more evangelism and church planting ontheir own. We do not as yet see where this will ultimately lead, but we are excited about the possibilities. More about that later.

we turn our eyes back East to the ^African continent and^Mbal^. What

in the world! Lee plans to be the body.home before the baby is born, butduring those three months we have packed a large number of potentialactivities and projects to be completed. Here we go:- - --

1) The building of a church building to seat around 200 peoplein the Township of Mbala. The Mbala Christians will be doing alarge portion of the work and with the Lord's blessing we will beable to complete building in the allotted time. In Zambia we donot purchase the land on which to build, it is given to us if wewill develop it within a certain length of time; that time willexpire in June of this year, and so the building must begin.

2) Laying the groundwork and exploring the feasibility ofthe Zambia Evangelism Support Team. A letter I received back fromone of our Christian brothers the other day was very encouragingconcerning the possibilities of ZEST.

3) Visitation of the churches in the Mbala area with thepurpose of checking their progress and growth, evangelistic outreach, exhorting them in their work and helping them with anyproblems they may not have been able to work out.

4) Two projects that we pray will lead to further abilityof the churches to evangelize with their own support base.

GILBERT ARP VOLUNTEERS

Gilbert, a member of the West Hills Christian Church and along time friend of the Albaughs will be going to Zambia duringthe month of June to assist in the building of the church in Mbala.Gilbert is an engineer for Washington County and will be a greatasset to the work.

FINANCIAL NEEDS

Building costs are high in Zambia (as they are at home). Weestimate that the building will cost around $20,000. Our reservesat this time amount to about $10,000, including funds needed fortravel. Please keep this need before you in the coming months.

Page 2: Albaugh Lee Cheryl 1980 Zambia

We are so thankful for the consistent support you have givenin the past to the work in Zambia and we are confident that theLord will continue to work through you to meet the coming needs.Your support during the months of April - June will be very crucialto the building project.

• PRAYER NEEDS

Cheryl and I ask your prayers for our family during the monthsahead. It will not be an easy time for us during the separationperiod, and Brian will miss his "Daddy". Pray for Cheryl's pregnancy.

Hold before the Lord the four activities previously mentionedthat Lee and Gilbert will be working on while in Zambia. Pray thatall goes smoothly and the time will be used well.

Pray for the preparations being made for the venture beginningin May.

Uphold the Zambian Christians daily.Remember the financial needs for building the church building.

FUTURE PLANS

working with a possible ZEST pro- ifrrft^gram,he will also be making some 'T*decisions as to the future work in HHrlMbala. We are praying for guid-ance as to the way to approach thework of evangelism and churchplanting in Mbala, whether we need Bbe there full time or if a lay !ministry approach to the work -Jwould be possible. We have beforeus the possibility of a job in the

—S^tates-^hat—would—allow -uis-. 2 — — -BL. —months out of the year fprjork in - Uemth thebuMingcre^.Zambia; encouraging, assisting, and ^working with the Zambian Christians. We believe this approach hassome real advantages towards building an indigenous church in Mbalathat is capable of evangelism without the presence of a full timemissionary. We will be sharing these things with you after Leereturns in August and the plans are developed.

May the Lord richly bless you as you continue your servicefor Him.

"Sen'ing Girist with our Brothers in Zambia'

July 1, 1980

On May 12, I98O, Lee said "goodbye" to Cheryl and Brian, checkedhis overweight bag laden with the just printed Lungu songbook and boarded the plane for Seattle and on to London. We weren't sure how Brianwould take this separation, but he was too busy playing with his cousinsat the airport to worry about Daddy until "Daddy" was half way to Seattle.

Before leaving for Zambia we had set three main goals for this trip, which were:

1) To survey the present needs of the Christians in the Mbala area, encouraging and planning the future with them.

.2) To begin construction of the Mbala township -church^uilding-and -to insure that the plot would not be tak;en away because the time hadlapsed for development to begin.

3) To formulate our future plans on how to work in Mbala. We feel these goals were pretty much accomplished except for the

actual building construction. Let me share a little about the trip.THE JOURNEY

On May .16 I landed in Kasama, Zambia, After being away for 11 months, what would things be like in Zambia? Would the churches have stagnatedor grown? Politically was the country doing better? All these questionswere on my mind as Tom^Fort drove me into town and down the familiarstreets of Kasama. Things looked close to the same, except for the new3 story building erected for the Workmans Compensation people. (Thelirst "high rise" in Kasama) We shared together news of the world andtalked late into the night.

In the Fort's back yard sat our poor Peugeot pick-up, minus a windshield and with ^ flat tires. The chickens had been using the inside asa roost after the thieves carried off the windshield. Unbelievably, after a new battery and a little cleaning up, it started on the firstpop of the engine! It looked a little strange with a piece of plasticinstead of a windshield, but it worked, people just thought me_a. littlestrange!

By May 20th I was in Mbala looking up the African Christians andletting them know I was back in town. Just before leaving for Zambiawe had heard that the plans for our building were lost by the planningauthorities, but looking into our stuffed Post Box I found a one monthold letter from them saying that we had final approval! Another letterin the box said we had one month to reply if we still wanted the plot,It was a month to the day when I opened up the box! I ran down to theTown^Council and paid the additional fee for the lease with the stip-ulation that development on the property be completed in a year. Ithen began looking into materials to lay the foundation, but was disappointed to find that there was no cement in the area. Gilbert Arp fromthe West Hills Christian Church had planned to meet me in Mbala during

possible. Because of the cemerlt problem I telegram-med to tell him that it would not be possible at this time.HOW ARE THE CHRISTIANS?

It was encouraging tofind that the churches in Mbala, both in townand the villages, were doing well and had grown. It is good to see somegrowth while you are away, this indication of a willingness to evangelizeon their own was one of the qualities I was looking for on this trip.

The churchyat Kalekwa Village has built a meeting place at a centralplace in the village. Up until this structure was completed they hadbeen meeting in the home of one of the members, and needless to say itwas getting a little cramped. 6? people met to greet me for a serviceone morning. It was good to see familiar faces, and some not so familiar ones. There was a good spirit in all the churches. At Malamba

Tu over 50 people met for worship, followed by two baptisms. Inthe town church which is an older congregation but one which has hadlittle growth for some years, I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted5? church and an enthusiastic group of believers excited aboutthe future plans to build. All of the churches were happy with the Lungulanguage songbooks we had compiled, printed and delivered. They nowcan sing in their own dialect.

Praise the Lord for the believers who have remained faithful and havebeen pressing on to evangelize their areas. It warms my heart! Thisencourages us to go forward and give them our support in love!

SOME OBSERVATIONS

What are things like in Zambia at this time? Here are a few ofobservations that I made while in the country:

1) Indications from the young Zambian Christians who have beenthrough Secondary school (High school) show a great stirring of interestin spiritual matters. Young Christians are taking the lead in evangelism in the main towns , mainly using english. In Kasama a group ofyoung Christians organized an evangelistic crusade for one week whileI was there and saw many come to Christ. The results of this crusadewere evident the next Sunday in worship.^ 2). The next few years will be crucial in establishing the africanindigenous church outside of mission influence. Just as these africannations are emerging into adulthood in the world, so the churches aregrowing and_taking their own lead and direction,

3) Politically things are better in Zambia. Foreign workers areagain being invited to help in the countries development. Economically the picture has improved a bit, but recovery is being slowed by apotential famine situation this year.

4) The general feeling in the area has become more relaxed as thetensions of a war footing have eased. I was not asked for identification one time while in Zambia!

FUTURE PIAKS

The trip has encouraged us to make the decision to return to Zambiain November of this year for another 3 year term. The next yearsshould be the most productive of our time in Zambia as we are well established in Mbala and have a good base from which to grow. The apparent^ willingness of the people to evangelize at this time is a goodindication that the time is right to harvest. The Lord has equipped uswith the language and a willing people, so we feel this is where Hewants us for the coming three years.

We are expecting our second born in August of this year, A departure in November will give mother and newborn some time to get adjusted.THANK YOU...

...for your prayers and support during this difficult time. We hopethat we will be able to visit you all again before leaving in November. We hoy before you the cost of building a church building,._^This .willcost in the neighborhood of $20,000, which we are hoping to raise asubstantialyart of along with our traveling expenses. That is a bigorder, but if the Lord is in it, all will go well. Please pray withus about this need.

Aly be in prayer about the needs of the churches. Continued zealin their work. Encouragment in the Faith. Safety from the food problemthis year. I know they would appreciate your prayers. They all werevery concerned about the volcanoe and our safety. They wanted me togreet you all in the name of Christ.

IN CLOSING

It is difficult to share with you all that has happened on thesurvey trip and the intervening period since the last Newsletter. Itwas a rewarding and fruitful venture, the Christians were excited to seeme and encouraged with our plans to build on our retiirn in November. Please hold them and us up in your prayers during these months of preparation. You will be hearing from us in the near future concerningour return and those preparations.

Happy Holidaysfrom our familyto yours ...

...MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE ALBAUGH'SIN Zambia:

Yes, that's right, we are back in Zambia (twodays back and now getting ready to head northfor Mbala. We do want to take this opportunityto wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and pray that the Lord will bless you greatlywith His love and mercy this year. It is becauseof the birth of Christ Jesus over 1980 years agothat we are able to carry the message of salvationto the people of Zambia. What a privilege to bebearers of that message !

MWALE SHANI? How was the journey?

Packing boxes, moving, last minute details, sadgoodbyes are behind us for the time being as werelax for a day here in Lusaka, Zambia, withmission friends. The "day after" jet lag is uponus after 30 hours of straight travel from theStates. We arrived the morning of Dec. 1, theDavis and Burlington Families met us at the airport as we struggled through customs with 6suitcases, two kids and 5 carry-on bags ("neveragain", says Lee).

Last nights sleep was a welcome one. Brianand Christy slept well despite the hot humidweather we are having. The children traveledpretty well, considering the torture it is to flyat that age. Sitting for 9 straight hours is justnot Brians' idea of a fun time! This morningBrian drank some milk that did not settle withhim, and so we made some fast trips to thebathroom, but otherwise the children are doingwell, along with their tired mother and father.

British Caledonia Airline was very good to usduring our layover in London. They even allowed us to rest in their first class lounge; praise theLord for their mercy to four tired travelers.

On this coming Thursday, December 4th, wewill head north for Kasama and then, Lord willing, on December 8th we will go on up to Mbalaand reclaim our house. It has been a long roadsince we started packing up the first week in November, now the unpacking begins but the end isin sight !!
