2008 Accomplishments• TsunamiReady presentations for Cordova (Schools, Public, Officials)• Tsunami and earthquake presentations made at multiple meetings and conferences (LEPC, SERC, Exercise IPC, etc)• Identified new or replacement educational/promotional materials• Evacuation signs delivered to the Whittier, replacement signs to Sitka• Siren survey was sent to coastal communities • Continued distribution of educational materials (children’s Tsunami and Earthquake booklets, Are You ready for the Next Big Quake)
• 14 warning sirens installed in several communities (FEMA funding)
2008 Issues • Performance period extended until July 31, 2010
• Recurring procurement problems for warning sirens
• Coordination and communication with rural Alaskan communities problematic
2009 Accomplishments• TsunamiReady presentations in Adak (School, Public, and City Officials). Adak is 1100 miles SW of Anchorage in the Aleutian chain!• Tsunami and earthquake presentations given at two ATEP teacher seminars• Sand Point awaiting final TsunamiReady recognition• Governor proclamation for “Alaska Tsunami Awareness Week” • Live Code Test conducted during tsunami awareness week• Numerous PSA’s broadcast on media prior to Live Code Test• Coordination with Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) to develop an Emergency Manager Tsunami Education Module (direct NOAA funding) • Evacuation signs purchased for Whittier, 3 replacement signs to Sitka• Siren survey sent to coastal communities
2009 Accomplishments continued• Reproduced 1,000 copies of Ocean Fury• Purchased Weather Radios• Distributed numerous educational materials (children’s Tsunami and Earthquake booklets, Are You ready for the Next Big Quake• Warning sirens installed in five communities (previous funding)• Tsunami Warning System training at TWC for WCM’s • Seven warning sirens installed in Valdez (HS funding)• Editing a new children’s tsunami booklet
2009 Issues• Procurement problems for warning sirens continues but is being alleviated• Staffing issues• No cost extension request most likely

AEIC, ADG&GS and the ADHS&EM conducted an introductory visit to Whittier and introduced the tsunami inundation mapping project.
During the recent GPS field survey in Whittier, we collected more than 100 elevation measurements in order to improve the coastal area of Whittier DEM.
We analyzed and modeled the underwater slope failures in Passage Canal that generated destructive tsunami waves in Whittier.
We modeled seiches observed in the Passage Canal in 1964 that were caused by tilting of the bed of the fjord during the earthquake.
We conducted numerical modeling of the tectonic tsunami scenarios and prepared the first draft of the report.
AEIC and ADG&GS presented results of tsunami inundation mapping of the upper Resurrection Bay to the City of Seward and to the public. The presentation was very well received by the community.
The City of Seward and the Kenai Peninsula Borough are now conducting user review; the report and the maps are in publication.
