The NIH budget has been relatively flat after the doubling period, and has decreased when the effects of inflation are considered.

AIRI members continue to account for 6 – 7 percent of NIH funding, and have higher average awards than the overall NIH average.

AIRI accounts for nearly 12 percent of NIH research center awards.

While NCI provides the most award dollars to AIRI members, NHGRI provides the greatest proportion of its budget to AIRI members (30%).

Over the last decade, AIRI members continued to have higher RPG success rates than the NIH totals. AIRI members also consistently had higher first-time applicant funding rates than those from other institutions.

Summary Summary

The first time investigator policy successfully increased the number of funded first timer investigators from AIRI and other NIH-funded institutions.

The proportion of women first time investigators has risen slightly over the last decade. In FY 2010, women accounted for more than one third of first time investigators for AIRI, slightly higher than total.
