• American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) $10.4 billion total, $9.9 billion in extramural funding
• ARRA increased NIH research funding, changing a pattern of steady funding since the end of the doubling in FY 2003. Without ARRA, there would have been a decrease in funding when we adjusted for inflation
• AIRI members continue to account for 6 – 7 percent of NIH funding. AIRI accounts for nearly 12 percent of NIH research center awards
• The number of first time investigators has risen for NIH as a whole. AIRI members funded 82 first timers in FY 2009
• Women account for about one third of first time investigators for AIRI as well as all NIH
• Average costs for research grants tend to be higher for AIRI members than other types of organizations
