Session Objectives:

1. Provide an overview of aviation operation and careers

available in airline companies.

2. Review the top airline and airport around the world.

3. Classify airlines and airports

4. Identify major airline players both local and abroad

5. Identify the 2013 top Airlines company.


AIR TRANSPORT is one of the major modes of travel in which

travelers are chartered from tourist destination to another. Without this industry, other tourism industries, like car rentals, hotels and resorts, food establishments and tourist spots, will be at a standstill.

Air transport includes moving passengers, and their personal belongings, from one location to another by plane.

Major Airlines – these are airlines companies that generate annual revenues of $ 1 billion or more. Typically they offer both national and international flights.

National Airlines – These airlines have an annual revenues between $100 million and $ 1 billion. They offer regional, national and international flights as well.

Regional Airlines – These are companies that have annual revenues of less than $100 million. These airlines focus mostly on short-haul flights.

– Known as the first airline in Asia, PAL first chartered flight on March 1941. It is also the first Asian Airlines that crossed the Pacific via a Manila – Oakland route to the United States. Today the airline keeps up with the times by utilizing a computerized booking system. Operating as Philippine Airlines, is a flag carrier of the Philippines.

- is known for its low fare and great value strategy. Now operating a fleet of 21 Airbus (10 –A319 and 11 – A320) Cebu pacific is the youngest fleet in the Philippines. Today, the airlines flies international routes and has partnered with other establishments like car rentals, accommodation, and travel and tours insurance, to give its clients the finest service it can offer.

- The airline is a subsidiary of JG Summit Holdings. Cebu Pacific is currently headed by Lance Gokongwei, presumptive heir of John Gokongwei, the chairman emeritus of JG Summit. Cebu Pacific carried 12,3 million passengers in 2012 and is now the largest carrier in the Philippines.

– Formerly known as Asian Spirit, Zest air offers flight to 24 local destinations. It is operated by AMY Holdings Corporation (AHC). It started its operations in 2008. The company is aggressive in expanding as it continues to upgrade its fleet to gain a share of the market. In 2013, the airline became an affiliate of Philippines Air Asia operating their brand separately.

- The airline was originally founded as Asian Spirit, the first airline in the Philippines to be run as a cooperative. On 16 August 2013, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the regulating body of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines for civil aviation, suspended Zest Air flights until further notice due to safety issues. AirAsia and Zest Air's strategic alliance, the two companies have rebranded as AirAsia Zest.

- now operating as PAL Express (formerly Airphil Express, Air Philippines), is a low-cost airline that operates both domestic and international scheduled services from Manila, Cebu, Davao and Zamboanga. The airline was re-branded for a number of times, first as Air Philippines, then as PAL Express.

- The new Airphil Express is Philippine Airlines' answer to Cebu Pacific Air's dominance on the low cost travel market in the Philippines which significantly shrunk its market share and relegated it to the no. 2 spot from its dominant no. 1 position since inception. It allowed PAL to focus on the premium market where it does not have competition in the domestic Philippine market.

2013 World Airline Awards.



1. Emirates - is an airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is wholly owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai. It is the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 3,000 flights per week from its hub at Dubai International Airport, to more than 150 cities in 74 countries across six continents. Cargo activities are undertaken by the Emirates Group's Emirates Sky Cargo division.




2. Qatar Airways Company.

-operating as Qatar Airways, is the state-owned flag carrier of Qatar. Headquartered in the Qatar Airways Tower in Doha,[3] the airline operates a hub-and-spoke network, linking over 100 international destinations from its base in Doha, using a fleet of more than 100 aircraft.

-operates services across Africa, Central Asia, Europe, Far East, South Asia, Middle East, North America, South America and Oceania.

The airline has more than 20,000 staff, with 14,000 people employed directly and a further 6,000 in its subsidiaries.



3. Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA)

-is the flag carrier and 5-star airline of Singapore. Singapore Airlines operates a hub at Changi Airport and has a strong presence in the Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, and "Kangaroo Route" markets. The company also operates trans-Pacific flights, including the world's two longest non-stop commercial flights from Singapore to Newark and Los Angeles on the Airbus A340-500. Singapore Airlines carried around 18 million passengers in 2012, up from 16.9 million in 2011.



4. All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd

- also known as ANA, is Japan's largest. It is headquartered at Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It operates services to 49 destinations in Japan and 32 international routes and employed over 14,000 employees as of May 2009. In May 2010, ANA's total passenger traffic is up year-on-year by 7.8%, and its international services grow by 22% to 2.07 million passengers in the first five months of 2010. ANA's main international hubs are at Narita International Airport outside Tokyo and Kansai International Airport outside Osaka.



5. Asiana Airlines Inc. formerly Seoul Airlines)

- is one of South Korea's two major airlines, along with Korean Air. Asiana has its headquarters in Asiana Town in Seoul. The airline has its international hub at Incheon International Airport. It operates 14 domestic and 90 international passenger routes, and 27 cargo routes throughout Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. As of December 2012, the company employs 9,595 people. Asiana is also currently an official sponsor of the South Korea national football team.



6. Cathay Pacific

- is the international flag carrier of Hong Kong, with its head office and main hub located at Hong Kong International Airport. The airline's operations include scheduled passenger and cargo services to 168 destinations in 42 countries worldwide, including codeshares and joint ventures, with a fleet of wide-body aircraft, consisting of Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 equipment. In 2010, Cathay Pacific and Dragonair carried nearly 27 million passengers and over 1.8 million tonnes of cargo and mail.

-is the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates. Established by Royal decree in July 2003 and based in Abu Dhabi, Etihad commenced operations in November 2003. The name derives from the Arabic word for "union"

The airline operates more than 1,300 flights per week to 86 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas, with a fleet of 72 Airbus and Boeing aircraft. In 2012, Etihad carried 10.3 million passengers, a 23% increase on the previous year, delivering revenues of US$ 4.8 billion and net profits of US$ 42 million. Etihad Airways is the fourth largest airline in the Middle East and it is the second largest airline in the United Arab Emirates, after the Dubai-based airline Emirates.

- publicly known as Garuda Indonesia, is the flag carrier of Indonesia. It is named after the mythical giant bird Garuda of Hinduism and Buddhist mythology. Garuda Indonesia is headquartered at International Airport in Jakarta.

- The airline operates flights to a number of destinations in Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Australia from its main hub.

- Garuda Indonesia was the official sponsor of the 2011 SEA Games. The airline received its IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) in 2008 and 2010. In 2012, the airline officially spun-off its Citilink low-cost operations.



9. Turkish Airlines

-is the national flag carrier airline of Turkey, headquartered at the Turkish Airlines Istanbul. It operates scheduled services to 40 domestic and 198 international airports in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. With an increase to 104 destination countries, the carrier's destination network from one hub is the world's largest. Also, with 238 destinations, the airline is the fourth-largest carrier in the world by number of destinations.[

- is the flag carrier of Australia.The name was originally "QANTAS", an acronym for "Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services". Nicknamed "The Flying Kangaroo", Qantas is Australia's largest airline, the oldest continuously operated airline in the world and the second oldest in the world overall.

- Qantas carries a 65% share of the Australian domestic market and carries 18.7% of all passengers travelling in and out of Australia.

- is a tract of land where aircraft can take off and land. An airport is usually equipped with hard-surfaced landing strips, a control tower, hangars, aircraft maintenance and refueling facilities, and cargo. Airports, for millions of people, are jump-off points to travel from one destination to another.

AVIATION CAREER OPPOTUNITIES

Line Personnel – Comprising the majority of airline personnel, line personnel are directly involved in the production and selling of airline services. The engineering and maintenance group, flight operations, and sales and marketing team usually compose this group.


AVIATION CAREER OPPOTUNITIES Operation – The people in this area are generally

responsible for airline operations in terms of safety and efficiency. Some of their functions include airline and flight crew scheduling and training.

Engineering & Maintenance – The maintenance personnel is responsible for assuring the safety and air worthiness of the aircraft.

responsibility is to set fares, and strategically market and oversee the promotions of the airline. They are also in charge of customer service, cargo sales, reservations and food service.
