Executive  Summary

National  Leadership  Development  Conference  is  one  of  two  national  AIESEC  conferences  each  year  and  isspecifically  geared  to  individuals  holding  leadership  roles  in  the  organization.    This  rare  opportunity  will  see250+  students  from  28  Canadian  universities  gather  in  Ottawa  to  learn  about  our  nation’s  internal  realities  and  external  markets  as  they  set  the  next  intermediate  strategic  vision  and  direction  for  AIESEC  Canada.

The  conference  aims  to  develop  high  quality,  entrepreneurial  leadership  through  sessions  on:     -  internal  and  external  market  realities   -  professional  soft  skills   -  functional  training  in  the  areas  of       -  leadership             -  finance     -  project  management           -  human  resource  management     -  global  internship  program  management     -  sales     -  social  media             -  marketing

It  also  provides  a  platform  on  which  students  will  be  able  to  interact  with  successful  AIESEC  alumni,  AIESEC  National  Partners  such  as  Export  Development  Canada  and  Procter  &  Gamble,  and  other  members  of  the  Ottawabusiness  community.

This  conference  also  represents  a  unique  opportunity  to  affect  change  in  both  the  local  and  national  business  community  as  it  is  the  inaugural  conference  of  the  new  Ottawa-born  president  of  AIESEC  Canada,  Peter  Gallivan.Peter  was  the  president  of  AIESEC  Ottawa  in  2009-2010  and  is  a  student  at  the  Telfer  School  of  Management  at  the  University  of  Ottawa.    He  is  thrilled  to  be  returning  to  his  hometown  to  debut  his  national  presidential  term.    Over  the  past  year  Peter  has  served  as  the  national  VP  of  Corporate  Relations  for  AIESEC  Canada  giving  him  both  a  deep  understanding  of  and  a  national  perspective  on  Ottawa’s  position  in  Canada’s  business  landscape.

Take  the  opportunity  to  understand  and  engage  with  some  of  the  most  passionate,  talented,  and  ambitious  post-secondary  students  in  the  country  as  we  create  the  action  plan  that  will  lead  us  to  achieve  our  vision:

Our  Vision    |    National  Leadership  Development  Conference  ‘11

Recently  there  has  been  much  discussion  around  the  topics  of  how  we  can  foster  entrepreneurship  in  Canada  and

how  we  can  attract  and  retain  top  Canadian  business  talent  in  the  National  Capital  Region.

AIESEC  proposes  a  solution:  National  Leadership  Development  Conference  2011  in  Ottawa.    This  conference  will  be

a  platform  for  top  business  talent  from  28  Canadian  universities  to  come  together  and  receive  training  on  leadership

and  entrepreneurship.    The  students  will  also  be  addressed  and  inspired  by  examples  of  Canadian  business  success,

and  interact  with  the  Ottawa  business  community  so  that  the  business  leaders  of  tomorrow  can  gain  a  national

perspective  on  the  future  challenges  and  opportunities  our  country  faces.

We  aim  to  define  and  develop  Canada’s  position  in  the  global  economy,  one  we  believe  is  strongly  linked  to  an  image

of  business  leadership,  striving  for  excellence,  diversity,  and  cultural  understanding.    Our  organization  believes  we

can  contribute  to  furthering  Canada’s  internal  and  external  success  by  equipping  our  delegates  with  the  skills  they

need  to  become  more  entrepreneurial  in  foreign  markets,  to  develop  world-class  businesses  that  are  both  socially

responsible  and  sustainable,  and  to  act  as  ambassadors  for  Canada  and  Canadian  business  abroad.

AIESEC Leaders:

- 24% of AIESEC alumni have created their own company; 7% have created an NGO

- 95% of AIESEC alumni believe in socially responsible leadership; 89% believe AIESEC develops socially

responsible leaders

- The most common behaviours acquired or developed in AIESEC were having a global mindset, being aware

of global issues, having international orientation, being adaptable, and having social responsibility

AIESEC Impact:

-  Canadian  AIESEC  alumni  all  acquired  or  developed  the  following  12  skills  during  their  AIESEC  experience:  leadership,

entrepreneurship,  strategic  thinking,  planning,  budgeting,  project  management,  time  management,  innovative  thinking,

effective  communication  sales,  teamwork,  and  networking  skills

-  9  out  of  10  AIESEC  alumni  believe  their  awareness  of  global  issues  increased  as  a  result  of  their  AIESEC  experience

-  1  out  of  every  2  AIESEC  alumni  consider  them  self  first  and  foremost  a  citizen  of  the  world

AIESEC  is  the  world’s  largest  student-run  organization  and  the  leading  platform  for  young  people  to  develop  their  leadership  potential.  AIESEC  is  composed  of  over  50,000  student  and  recent  graduate  volunteers  from  over  107  countries,  plus  a  network  of  over  one  million  alumni  that  includes  leaders  of  industry  and  heads  of  state.  AIESEC  provides  its  members  with  the  skills  and  experience  needed  to  transform  them  from  high-potential  students  into  the  leaders  of  tomorrow.  AIESEC’s  innovative  development  process  consists  of  unmatched  leadership  experiences  and  global  internships.

Leadership

A  key  advantage  AIESEC  members  have  over  many  students  is  that  they  regularly  acquire  real-world  skills  and  experiences,  often  relating  to  their  areas  of  study.  Volunteering  in  AIESEC  fosters  valuable  competencies  including  leadership,  teamwork,  interpersonal  skills,  and  time  management.  AIESEC  members  volunteer  8  to  20  hours  a  week  while  managing  university  and  jobs  because  they  recognize  that  their  AIESEC  experience  is  an  investment  in  their  future.

The  Global  Internship  Program

AIESEC’s  Global  Internship  Program  connects  companies  with  an  immense  talent  pool  of  the  best  and  brightest  students.  Those  students  are  in  turn  provided  with  work  experience  in  either  management,  technical  skills,  development,  or  education.  All  parties  benefit  greatly  from  the  inevitable  exchange  of  international  perspectives  and  global  ideas.  For  over  60  years  companies  have  relied  on  the  Global  Internship  Program  to  meet  their  employment  needs  by  gaining  access  to  a  global  network  of  responsible  young  leaders.
