SPiritSister Mary Mollison, Vice President Mission Integration

This year is a time to praise and thank God for the opportunity to continue the healing mission of Jesus over 120 years of service through St. Agnes Hospital. The year 2016 is also significant as it was 20 years ago that the Fond du Lac Regional Clinic and St. Agnes Hospital came together to create the integrated healthcare system we know today as Agnesian HealthCare.

As recorded in the annals of the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, in 1895, citizens and local physicians of Fond du Lac petitioned the Sisters of St. Agnes “to build a hospital for the care of the sick in the city of Fond du Lac and vicinity.”

It was a “leap of faith” to begin St. Agnes Hospital since no member of the congregation was educationally prepared to manage a hospital or provide care to the sick. This courageous initiative began the history of caring we are celebrating.

An anniversary celebration is also a moment to articulate a promise for the future. As the delivery of healthcare continues to transition, the need for value-based, quality healthcare services remains.

Respect for human dignity, concern for individuals who are poor and vulnerable, and commitment to promoting the common good remain cherished values at Agnesian HealthCare.

Our promise for the future is to continually respond to the challenges and opportunities of these times with vision, innovation and courage.

This issue of Living In Good Health shares many examples of our determination to work collaboratively with others to create healthier communities.

My goals. My Choice.

Never underestimate the power of positive connections. That was the case for Erin Ahern, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her family, upon first meeting Bryan Royce, MD, orthopedic surgeon.

In June 2015, Erin was injured in a moped accident on the UW-Madison campus. Testing showed she tore her ACL. While Erin and her parents initially looked for care in the Madison community due to Erin’s school location, they decided to speak with Dr. Royce about options at home. “There was something about Dr. Royce that was very comfortable,” Erin explains. “We were very pleased with how great he was at communicating, educating and answering every question. We didn’t feel rushed by him and we really connected.”

It didn’t hurt that Dr. Royce is also an alumni of the University of Wisconsin - a Badger fan tried and true!

“When I first met Erin it was very obvious that staying active and getting exercise was important to her and a significant part of her busy life,” says Dr. Royce. “I wanted to make sure she could get back to school and back to pursuing her career without having to slow down or compromise her activity level. It was essential that we not let her accident and injury alter her active lifestyle.”

Erin’s family lives in Fond du Lac, so Erin was able to recover at her parents’ house, and do her physical therapy at Agnesian HealthCare’s Sports & Spine Center with Brooke Gardner, DPT/LAT.

“I could not be more pleased with my choice,” Erin says. “I was determined to start my physical therapy and work really hard because I wanted to get back to running and living my active lifestyle. Brooke worked well with me to help me achieve all of my goals.”

For many of us, our childhood was spent playing outdoors never worrying about the effects that the sun was having on our bodies.

For Steve Wendt, a Waupun resident, he took an active role in his family’s farm - never thinking about wearing sunscreen like so many are cautioned to in today’s world. Steve says, “I would also play many hours of pickup basketball, on the outdoor courts, after the chores were finished!”

As Steve grew older, he developed moles and always had a schedule of semi-annual screenings to be on the “safe side.” He started this process with James Schuster, mD, dermatologist, and later transferred his care to michael tjoelker, mD, dermatologist, who sees patients in Ripon. It was ideal for Steve, who works in Ripon at the Commonwealth Press and Express.

In 2015, Dr. Tjoelker found a suspicious lesion on Steve’s head. A biopsy showed that the lesion was melanoma.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can spread quickly to organs, such as the liver, lungs, bones and brain. Many melanomas are caused by excess sun exposure. The more time you spend in the sun, the higher your chance of getting this type of cancer.

Steve was then referred to richard Schaefer, mD, plastic surgeon, for an office procedure to remove the cancerous lesion. Steve credits the speed and efficiency of his caregivers for his quick return to work.

Steve later returned to have his stitches removed from the top of his head. Coincidentally, Jean rusch, Apnp, the nurse practitioner that took care of this process, after talking through some of Steve’s history of basketball injuries and stitches received, pieced together that Steve played ball with Jean’s father-in-law at Milton College. “Small college - small world,” Steve notes.

“If you have any questions on a suspicious mole, get it checked out immediately,” Steve recommends. “Skin mapping and screening saved my life.”

Dr. Schaefer concurs. “Melanoma can be a very serious cancer that can be more effectively treated when caught early. Early detection is important. Start with a dermatologist for an evaluation. Watch for changing skin lesions or sun damaged skin that bleeds for no reason and doesn’t heal.”

Take our melanoma quiz at agnesian.com/quiz.

Susanne Dennis-Bellin, 79, of Fond du Lac, has been receiving care from Dana Vasquez, mD, internal medicine physician since 2000, and turned to her when she was unable to shake a cough.

Dr. Vasquez ordered a chest X-ray, which revealed a growth on Susanne’s lung. A biopsy confirmed the growth was cancerous.

Within a few days, the growth was removed by r. eric lilly, mD, a cardiothoracic surgeon with Froedert & Medical College of Wisconsin who practices full time at Agnesian HealthCare. That was followed by chemotherapy at the Agnesian Cancer Center with michael Jones, mD, medical oncologist.

Susanne’s care from Agnesian HealthCare didn’t end there. “Before my lung cancer treatment, I had a PET scan done that showed I had thyroid cancer. Working with my providers, it was decided to treat my lung cancer first, and then treat the thyroid cancer second.”

She turned to John nash, mD, otolarynologist (ear, nose and throat physician). The thyroid cancer was treated successfully with help from Dr. Nash and specialists from Froedtert.

Remaining diligent in follow-up checks was essential for Susanne. “It was recommended that every six months I have a CT scan to follow up on my lung cancer,” Susanne explains. “In November 2015, the CT showed a tumor in my chest. I returned to Dr. Lilly’s capable hands and had surgery.”

Surgery was followed by radiation treatments at the Agnesian Cancer Center with Adam liss, mD, radiation oncologist.

Thinking of her family, Susanne recently went through genetic testing offered by lisa michels, Apnp, nurse practitioner. Fortunately, her test was negative, which means that her cancers were not caused by a hereditary genetic mutation.

While her care is complete at this time, she still keeps the Agnesian Cancer Center in her mind. “I stay in constant contact and always call with questions. It was meaningful to me that all the providers involved in my care came out and wished me well when I finished my treatments and rang the Angel Bell.”

haPPineSS and hoPeBy Darold A. Treffert, MDMy first position as a psychiatrist in 1962 was to start a children’s unit at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. There were no such units anywhere else in the U.S. to emulate so we set out to create our own and make it the best in the country.

We gathered 25 patients under age 18, most of whom were severely autistic. I hired a school principal and we started Waterwood School. As I looked at those troubled children, it seemed to me somewhere within those 25 little guys and girls, no matter how impaired, was an “island of intactness.” Our task was to find that island, however tiny, and then tend it, nourish it, love it, and reward it so it would grow and expand.

To my surprise in some children those “islands of intactness” were really “islands of genius,” and it was there I met my first savants. One boy had memorized the entire bus system of the city of Milwaukee. Another, even though mute and uncommunicative, could put a 200 piece jigsaw puzzle together - picture side down - just from the geometric shapes.

I asked the question then, and now ask the same question 54 years later: How is it possible to have such extraordinary ability and crippling disability in the same person? What might that say about hidden potential within us all? Shouldn’t we be looking for that “island of intactness” in everyone with a disability?

So I have studied autism and savant syndrome for all these intervening years. In that process I have

accumulated a vast store of case histories, videos, books, articles, documentaries and artwork. My hope all along was to establish a major “savant institute” to house, carry on and expand my work. I considered some distant places but when Agnesian HealthCare offered space right here in Fond du Lac on the hospital campus it was a goal realized and deeply appreciated.

The Treffert Center will be a place to house all those autism/savant materials in a well-equipped library with state-of-the-art technology to share information and materials with other researchers worldwide. There will also be an expanded autism and other childhood disorders assessment and treatment center. And there will be a preschool to “teach to the talent,” and strengths of all those children who attend.

Every day I get e-mails from concerned parents looking for help, direction and support for their child. They always begin “I’ve got a son or daughter who……..” Some have savant abilities, some are hyperlexic and some are autistic. But all have that “island of intactness,” however large or tiny, like those that started me on this journey so many years ago.

If we can provide “happiness and hope” to individuals and their loving families looking for help, support and guidance at the Treffert Center, we will be able to say empathically and proudly “mission accomplished.” I want that to be the legacy of the Treffert Center.

Looking at Pastor Steve Huff, you would never imagine that heart issues would be a concern for him. After all, having served for 20 years with some of America’s finest sailors and U.S. Marines, he is as fit physically as he is spiritually and mentally. Since moving to Fond du Lac six years ago, Pastor Huff has served the congregation at Hope Lutheran Church which has more than 1,800 members.

Pastor Huff and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 34 years, and enjoy spending time with their three children and four grandchildren.

“I start my day around 4:30 each morning with one hour of exercise with either the rowing machine or the stationary bike,” Pastor Huff shares. “Living a healthy lifestyle is high on my priority list.”

However, in January 2016, Pastor Huff was having difficulties walking up a simple flight of stairs. “My heart was racing and I felt out of breath,” he recalls.

He scheduled an appointment with his friend and parishioner Derek colmenares, mD, (“Doc”) to see what was going on.

During his visit, Dr. Colmenares referred Pastor Huff to Agnesian HealthCare’s Dale Michels Center for Heart Care where Pastor Huff was seen by Juan Diaz, mD, interventional cardiologist.

“Steve had a condition called A-fib,” according to Dr. Diaz. “This is where the heart gets out of normal synchrony or rhythm. This causes the patient to feel fatigued and out of breath.”

The treatment for this is easily within reach. With the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), Dr. Diaz was able to return Pastor Huff’s heart to a normal sinus rhythm.

“I am back to feeling like myself,” says Pastor Huff, who now just has normal follow-up visits with “Doc” Colmenares.

Big or small, when it comes to caring for heart conditions and disease, the Dale Michels Center for Heart Care has you covered.

Caring forWoMen

Steven Sheppard, DO

Moms, wives, co-workers, sisters and friends... while women have many roles in life, the task of caring for themselves isn’t always at the top of the “to-do list.”

“Annual exams and screenings with primary care providers and specialists are essential to maintaining the best health possible,” says Steven Sheppard, DO, obstetrician/gynecologist. “You cannot care for others if you don’t care for yourself.

“When considering annual appointments remember that age, family history and genetics play a large role in the frequencey and onset of screenings,” Dr. Sheppard adds.

Finding Comfort Where it Matters Most

richard mcmahon, Jr., DO

Jon moen, mD

Jonathan Stroebel, Dpm

It’s difficult to fathom how much wear and tear we place on our feet, until we start having health concerns.

That was the case for Jim Stelsel, 77, of Waupun, who has been managing diabetes for more than 13 years. His primary care provider, richard mcmahon, Jr., DO, family medicine physician in Waupun, has been working with him to most effectively manage his diabetic symptoms.

This is important as Jim and his wife, Karen, own and operate a dairy farm in rural Brandon. They keep busy with three children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. “Our family is our biggest joy, and the cows need daily attention.”

As with many diabetics that are on their feet a lot, improper fitting shoes can cause rubbing and sores. Jim was no exception.

At the recommendation of Dr. McMahon, Jim visited Jon moen, mD, wound care physician and general surgeon, to address the wounds that were developing on the tips of his toes.

“During my visit, Dr. Moen noted that I had a hammer toe,” Jim says. “The shape of my toe was causing the tip to hit the bottom of my shoe with every step.”

From there, Jim visited Jonathan Stroebel, Dpm, podiatrist (foot and ankle surgeon) who surgically released the tendons and straightened his toes.

“When I met with Jim, we discussed the fact that proper fitting shoes would be an asset for him since he was on his feet all the time, and are very important to preventing further diabetic foot ulcers and pain,” according to Dr. Stroebel.

The Agnesian Health Shoppe, 307 Camelot Drive in Fond du Lac, was able to help. “The customer service representatives were so helpful in offering me a wide selection of therapeutic/diabetic shoes that were not just stylish, but extremely comfortable.

“I didn’t realize what comfortable shoes even felt like,” Jim adds. “These shoes make a world of difference. I have two pairs - one for work and one for church.”

The Agnesian Health Shoppe has associates that are certified fitters of therapeutic shoes who specialize in finding the perfect fitting shoes for each individual’s feet. There is a wide selection to view from athletic to casual to dress. Staff are also trained to assist each patient with possible insurance coverage. Although plans vary, most have coverage for the diabetic patient and cover one pair of shoes per year.

Katie Gregory serves as the full-time therapeutic shoe fitter. While she works by appointment, walk-in appointments are always welcome.

For Crystal Pucker, of Rosendale, her connection with Dwayne clark, mD, family medicine physician in North Fond du Lac, proved fruitful as she successfully took his advice to lose weight and eliminate the need to take high blood pressure medication.

How did you get started?I have been seeing Dr. Clark for more than eight years. He is always very thorough with his education and answering my questions. In July 2014, Dr. Clark told me that I needed to lose 11 pounds in the next three months otherwise he would have to put me on high blood pressure medication.

How did you do?I ended up losing 30 pounds in those three months. On my one-year anniversary of starting my weight loss journey, I had lost 105.6 pounds.

How did you achieve this?I ate lots of fruits and vegetables and cut my sodium intake. My goal is 30 minutes of exercise per day. When the weather is good, I ride my bike with my 13-year-old son and have ridden two trails that are each more than 20mileslong!IvisitDr.Clarkeverythreemonths; this helps me stay accountable.
